The Bill megathread (HC at UNC, girlfriend, etc.)

As you say, everyone's free to navigate the various reports as they see fit.

As above, to me 2018 was the **** or get off the pot moment. Plan A: extend Tom with a contract that rewards him for what he's putting up with. Plan B: Draft Lamar instead of Sony to keep the heat on Brady and so you have something once he leaves. We got no plan at all.

I think Bob's actions show that while he really appreciated Brady, when push comes to shove he valued BB over Tom. As you say he didn't force Bill to resign Brady to a contract that would reward him, nor did he step in to get any other accommodations for Tom, he just let Bill do what he wanted to do. I feel this was due to the aftermath of the Pete Carroll era where he got tagged as being a meddling owner. He didn't want to be that guy, again, but IMO he paid a big price for not stepping in.
If Bill was so mean and he was being treated unfair why sign an extension?

That's how you like to frame things, but we don't.

Yet you yourself said we should erase 2019 and beyond.
Ok what do you call it when you frame things like 'Bill without Brady'? I think erase is more than a fair word but you tell me what you call it?

One way to show Tom he is being treated fairly is to offer him $50M for two years and let him finish his career here.

And perhaps a few other perks like letting the 40+ year old GOAT have his personal trainer in the building.

Instead we got a bunch of future salary converted to bonuses, future 'poison pill' years and the no franchise clause.

Factual. As Parcells said, you are what your record says you are.

You are arguing for selective editing of reality rather than taking it all in, good or bad.

Bill had the opportunity to mend ties with Brady but chose to move on as fast as he could.

If he had made different choices this kind of discussion doesn't happen, but in reality he did what he did.

Bill has even less of a leg to stand on if these reports of him freezing out Mac Jones and Jerrod Mayo are true.

It’s pretty clear that at some point, Belichick became more about Team Bill than Team Patriots, and now more about Team Bill than Team UNC.

His own personal gripes and vendettas outweigh what is best for the team.

- Butler not playing in the SB
- Brady situation with the training
- Brady not extended
- souring relationship with ownership
- souring relationship with key players: Brady, Gronk, ‘Dola
- Saying he only wanted people/players around him he likes
- creating a small inner circle of family and sycophants
- Patricia/Judge coaching offense
- not talking to and coaching Mac Jones
- barring NFL scouts from UNC

Father time really gets everyone... including coaches.
Well Bill sucked when as a HC when he was young too.

The only period he hasn’t sucked was when Brady was QB. So I start asking myself if he was really the GOAT coach or just a product of Brady.

- Looking at every coach available on the market and deciding his two sons are the best guys for the job
- Giving Lombardi's kids similar treatment
- (Allegedly) freezing out Mayo once he gets a contract saying he's the designated heir
- (Allegedly) wanting his son Steve to be named his heir on his UNC contract

All this after preaching team-first is the Patriot Way.

Except the no franchise clause didn't come until later.

Barring complete catastrophe UNC spent too much not to give him a second year after that I'm not sure what's guaranteed.
It is a 5 year, $50 million contract with the first 3 years, $30 million guaranteed. Belichick's buyout is (reportedly) $1 million.
Now admittedly I don't know the college game well enough to even define catastrophe for a school like this. I'd probably start around.500. if he's less than that with all crap in the media that might be catastrophe.
The last guy, who was in his 2nd stint in Chapel Hill, went 43-29... and got fired. So that right there shows you the baseline for what isn't acceptable.

Forgive me if AI got something wrong I didn't crunch the numbers myself but I'm suggesting you are what your record says means include everything so 2000-2023.

You want to add Cleveland in then of course but slicing it any other way is completely useless there's no way to account for the 20 missing years if you try to parse it out. It's just the facts.

Or, and hear me out, maybe it's just really hard keeping everyone and everything going in the same direction so hard and so long and personal things can correlate without causing.

He’s such a hypocrite. He wouldn’t allow Guererro to be around, but lets Bunny be on the sidelines during games.
It was pregame.

Guerrero's a tough one because he obviously was great for Brady but that pliability stuff over strength training doesn't fly for everyone and all positions aren't equal to it. Brady needed him but Bill obviously needed strength guys to have control of their weight room.

In Cleveland Bill's HC record combined regular season & playoffs was... 0.451 (37-45)
In New England Bill's HC record combined regular season & playoffs without Brady was... 0.448 (47-58)

In New England Bill's HC record combined regular season & playoffs without Brady was... 0.769 (249-75) and yes Tom gets the 2008 W against KC because he started.

Cleveland Bill was better than Brady-less NE Bill.

Instead of constantly focusing on the negative and inventing narrative to fill in the gaps.

How about a little appreciation for just how fine a line we were talking about at the time. We obviously won in '18 and everyone wanted to run back but neither side wanted to be locked in because of just how fine a line we are talking about.

We went one and done in '19 so that is a decline from previous years and Brady was turning 43 still very much at the top of his game but our roster wasn't in its best shape as witnessed by the end of '19 especially the Tenn game. So with Brady wanting to play until 45 and again as witnessed by how it unfolded in Tampa and just obvious farther time each year represented his best chance at 7 so '20 was his most likely chance and our roster probably at best meant '21 would have been our best chance.

We all obviously have a personal stake in this all having played here in Foxboro but again let's just have a little appreciation for where we were and not invent reasons outside of that to explain as a great man once said it is what it is.

I can't blame BB for wanting to be careful about a long term commitment to a 43 yr old. Even though he was playing well it could have ended very abruptly at any point after that. The Pats went from champs in 2018 to chumps in 2019, with little hope they could rebound anytime soon. Brady also wanted out due to that, which Kraft granted (not Bill). It was a mutual parting. He still had one more good year in him, the Bucs superbowl year, but we weren't winning a SB in 2020 even with Tom.

The 2 million dollar QB has 69 passing yards on the season.

I bet Bunny wants to see Max Johnson.
