Patriots Injury News Larison to IR

That would suggest IR for the year. For the other questions raised, apparently you can put two on IR at/prior to the cutdown to 53, but not sure if that means you get 53 + those two, or what.

By Competition Committee; amends Article XVII, Section 17.16(C), to permit each club to place a maximum of two players who are placed on an applicable Reserve List on the business day of the final roster reduction to be designated for return. Such players will immediately count as two of the club’s total designations.

That’s the rule change.
It specifies placing the DTR label on the player on the roster reduction day.
The language does not clearly exclude players already placed on IR.
So it reads as if you can designate someone on IR to return.

That said, as noted, the Foxborough flu does not have a lot of success cases.

I guess a broken foot is better then a ligament issue of some kind.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him bulk up a little bit before next season...he won't be walking much for the next 2-3 months.

Deneric Prince has some talent, we’ll see if he’s progressed as a player. He’s another guy they can cut on roster cutdown day and probably still retain.

They would have to place him on final 53 on cut down day for him to come back this year. No way they do that.
He will not be coming back this year and an undrafted free agent rb recovering from a broken foot seems lime a longshot to come back to team next year
Sad outcome for a guy with a bright future

Sam,
Why don't you think he'd come back to the team next year? They clearly like him and he committed to come here. He'll also likely do most of his rehab here as he'll be on the payroll. I'm very hopeful that he'll come back next year with a real chance to make the team. No?

Sam has decided to be Tony Mazzerotti, the little contrarian schnauzer barking me too me too to any contrarian position. His only goal is to piss people off.

Very unfortunate, he showed up when it needed of him

It clear the football gods really want us to carry 7 wrs

To be fair, under Belichick, pretty much every rookie UDFA who went on IR before the season started got cut before the next draft. I don't know how things will work under Vrabel, though.

Larison has skills. If you check out his college tape, he made a bunch of amazing catches coming out of the backfield. He's clearly an excellent athlete and I'm hopeful that with some time in the system may be a really nice third down back. Tough as nails. I bet he'll be an excellent blocker as well (number one ranked high school steer wrestler in the country....). So I hope he'll stick around.

It's such a shame for the lad, this may sound crazy but as an athlete I think a broken foot can pan out better than ligament damage. In the day I have had both. But best of luck and I hope he is back soon.

Yes, but it delays any need to make a quick decision on him. He can be added a 4th RB whenever we wish, presuming the injury isn't a major one.
If you go on IR before final cutdown, you are out for the year.

Can you provide a reference to the CBA or league rules to show that? I’ve seen that stated, and I’ve seen it stated that any player already on IR can be designated for future return on cutdown day. The recent wording I’ve seen has been ambiguous, the only thing that seemed unambiguous was like four or six years old so I’d really like to find a current reference that’s definitive.

For reference, when I’ve tried to find something this was the clearest explanation I found:
If a player is placed on this list before the regular season begins, he could miss the entire season unless they are designated to return during the roster cutdown to 53 players after training camp. Teams can designate up to two such players to return.

Here’s where that came from:
From IR and PUP to practice squads: What do NFL roster designations mean?

My understanding is that you must designate full season or eligible to return at the time you put them on IR.
So “ unless they are designated to return during the roster cutdown to 53 players after training camp.” only applies to those being put on at cutdown.

Found it!

NFL Bylaws. Article XVII. Section 17.1(B):

Any players placed on Reserve/Injured prior to the roster reduction to 75 players on the Active List will not count on the club’s overall roster limit of 90 players, provided that the club requested waivers on the player with the designation “injured” and placed the player on Reserve/Injured immediately after the expiration of the claiming period and provided that all such players will count on the club's overall 90-man roster limit after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on the day of the cutdown to 75 players.

The copy of the Bylaws I found online (here) is not fully updated, but this shows clearly that the preseason IR list is used only during preseason and is separate from the in-season IR list.

So players who were Waived/Injured during the preseason must be Waived/Injured again during the roster cutdowns.

That means all players must be sent to the in-season IR on cutdown day.

Larison Lans on IR is a tough break

I think Vrabel’s approach will be different. I think he will treat guy like Larison and Lampe as redshirt freshman with specific roles in mind for them when they are cleared to return.
