PATRIOTS TRAINING CAMP Training Camp Day 9 - August 1 - 6pm STH Practice / Scrimmage

worst case scenario - injuries happen

you want a WR who blocks and plays special teams

- or -

a WR who catches the ball?
All of the above

The sense I get is that the offensive line will probably take some time to gel (especially if the left side are both rookies) and Maye will make some mistakes as he is still learning the system, but both should smooth out over time. Conversely, it seems like Vrabel and Williams have the defense in good shape, particularly the DL and LBs. That unit may look good from the jump.

There’s always bumps and bruises this time of year. Players are getting used to contact again, getting battle hardened. Until we hear definitive bad news, there’s no need to worry.

All that being said… they need to get through camp and preseason healthy to have a chance. True of every talented team.

And especially true of the less-talented teams... You know, like ours.

Practice is for testing limits and making mistakes. Sounds like there was a fair amount of good and bad.

When you suffer that many injuries vs your own damn team, then it's All bad.

Yep... One of my 4 UDFA binkies is already gone; and after today's "performance" two more will be gone in a couple of weeks... The only one remaining will then be the TE CJ Dippre... So much for Really changing the culture of the locker room
Maybe don't rely so much on UDFAs. Plenty of other vets and actual draft picks that can change that culture. And are doing that (Spillane, Diggs, Moses, and Milton to name a few).

Also who are you giving up on and why?

One pick off of receivers hand, 1 pick on a miscommunication in a 2-minute drill with a rookie, great learning moment. Tons of injuries? I thought only Bourne had to quit? Was there soemone else?

I've only been reading this thread since page 6 and I still know more about the other injuries than you do.

You missed the only actual bad thing, Rham fumbling!

Oh there was more bad than that...

Bourne: 29 yo (2 teams in 9 seasons)

Hollins: 31 yo (6 teams in 8 seasons)

Yep: Dawghouse Bourne sucks; but Hollins is even Worse.

Starting to wonder about conditioning.

Are they running the hill enough?

Do they need to adopt the TB12 pliability training?

I asked about the hill the other day..

I asked about the hill the other day..
I don't know about the hill. They have been ending each practice with 25 yard sprints in front of everyone.

The hill might be leveled out for the new training facility. I'd think the hill area was unaffected but who knows what kind of grading is also required for nearby areas when a structure like that goes up. It is a decent sized building.

Boutte seems to have that 4th spot locked down now That means if the top 4 stay healthy Bourne is gone. You don't pay your 5th WR who doesn't play STs something like 7 million dollars.

Imo now it is a 4 way race between Hollins, Baker, Polk and Chism for the last 2-3 spots. It is more likely imo they keep 7 than only 5.

Hollins has the inside track. Coaches love him. He brings something no one else has (size), elite run blocking and he plays STs. He isn't guaranteed a spot, but it is his to lose. He needs to either stay banged up or just not play up to his prior ability. Otherwise he is making this team.

I think Baker can make the PS unless he absolutely balls out in preseason. So I don't mind him not making the 53. That means can Polk or Chism justify their spots at 6 or 7? I think there is room for both. But only if they both earn it.

Chism needs to show he can play STs well enough to be a depth guy with upside. Polk needs to show he can live up to his talent. I don't think he needs to show STs so much as he may be worth if 2nd round pick if they hang in on him.

I think you could make a case that Boutte could be as high as WR3.

Just on the surface I would say it's pretty close between Boutte and Williams. From what I've seen I'd give a slight edge to Boutte even. Obviously there's a lot we don't see and obviously Williams being a rookie gives him a different trajectory but he also has to out preform before things get handed to him (he's not getting cut but he has to earn his reps too).

Similarly I wouldn't write off Bourne yet. Hollins might have an edge due to STs, size, blocking, or whatever but at the end of preseason it's still very possible Bourne is just the better receiver and we fill STs with a safety or something else.

Lots to consider. Vrabs best WR with Tenn was AJ who is a big strong dude. When they traded him (against Vrabs wishes) the drafted Burks, another big WR. I think Vrabs likes the bigger WR because he wants to be a team that can pound it down your throat in the run game like he did with Henry. If he's trying for the same offensive philosophy, that gives a big advantage to Hollins, who is easily the biggest/strongest WR on the roster. Listening to Vrabs presser (today, or the other day, can't remember), he even mentioned WR blocking. If you kept Bourne, odds are you aren't keeping one of Polk/Baker or maybe both. Does Bourne do anything special that warrants the higher price, or is it worth it to keep the much younger cheaper guy to develop with the hopes he surpasses what Bourne can bring as the 5th/6th WR? Personally I don't care which one sticks if either, I just struggle to see what Bourne brings to the team at his age/price.

I was there tonight. Even when Campbell got help he was still giving up pressures. Maye looked bad. Granted we missed the first 5-10 minutes but he was under Alot of pressure especially from Campbell's side and he rolled to his right and there was nothing there. He had a few throwaways, short gains, and sacks going out of the pocket. They looked like **** to me. The int was terrible. It's only one scrimmage but Maye did not look good. He threw a deep ball five yards OB to Diggs and Diggs had zero separation. The best play I saw was an end around to Diggs for about a 12 yard gain. Doubs looked much better than Maye. It's not apples to apples but Maye really did not look good. I really hope they're better than this Friday night

While that's not encouraging, appreciate the honest feedback from someone who was there.

By the way, love the tagline. I too was on KFFL way back, and Mouthoff even further back.

I couldn't be there. Was it full-speed/full-contact, or did they let up (as usually is the case at these things).
