No doubt. So let’s hope that the winner of the Battle of Mediocrity can be at least average.
Have you written Williams off as mediocre?

Williams is just above the battle of mediocrity. And I think it's important to say that some of these guys have a higher ceiling than just mediocrity too.

How do we know “they’re not that good”? We know what Bourne is, Polk, Baker and Chism are TBD at this point and have a month to show what they can be. Maybe they are no good, but maybe they aren’t. Don’t know how you could say definitively one way or other today.
They are not that good. That’s based upon their skillset, and on the field play. They certainly have camo to try to earn a spot, but they are what they are. If they stick it’s because we don’t have a full complement of players to fill out the position with guys that are not that good. Which many teams do. Earning the 6th WR spot doesn’t make them good.

This ^

Every year people suggest the team will be made up entirely of WR’s, then it never happens.

5-6 WR’s max will make the team. I can’t recall any time in my decades of watching the Patriots that 8 WR’s made the roster. 6 was a lot and that included the likes of Matt Slater who clearly wasn’t a WR.

The team had 7 WR on the roster at one point a few years back if you included Slater.
I don't remember there ever being 8..

Friesz was actually the #2. Bishop was #3. Brady was #4..
Exactly. That was the depth chart at the start of that season. It changed later on, but that's how the season started. And as Belichick said, Brady was on the roster because he was afraid of losing him on the practice squad.

Not long-term, but his rookie year, probably.

But what I was really referring to is the BoM to see who actually makes the team and contributes.

Belichick also said he was so frail he was almost afraid to play him.
Brady year 1 to year 2 could be the best year of development physically in history.

Where was Edleman on depth chart when he made the team? I suppose Welker and Amendola are garbage because they went undrafted. What they are today, isn't necessarily what they can be tomorrow.

Hollins coming back throws a wrench into projecting the depth chart.

Starters:
- Diggs, Hollins, Douglas

After them, Williams is a lock. So that leaves MAYBE two slots available for Boutte, Bourne, Polk, Baker, and Chism. Might even only be one slot.

Add Boutte as a lock, he's been consistent all camp and had the most 2024 WR snaps.

Take Bourne off the list. Bourne hasn't stood out so far, is older than the young lads that you listed on the bubble, and will save the Patriots roughly 12M in cap space over the next two years.

Take Baker off because he generally sucks.

You're left with Polk and Chism fighting for the 6th spot, with injuries being the wild card, as well as the possibility of keeping 7.

Well said.

Did you watch the Patriots last year? You are comparing Polk to Edelman, Amendola and Welker? Seriously?

Im not comparing Polk to anyone. The point is the young guys can be more than they are today, just like Edleman Welker and Amendola become very good players, and started as a 7th round pick and 2 UDFA. Welker was cut and went on to have a good career. Polk was absolute garbage last year, I would never argue he wasn't, but can he be more? You don't think so and that's fine. Welker wasn't good enough to be drafted and he was cut his first season. Pretty sure no one was projecting him to go on to do what he did.

Our WR group might be much better than regarded: thanks to that guy below. Really good Receivers Coach with a lot of experience.

You gotta be ****ing ****ting me now. Todd Downing ****ing Sucks. He's a ****ing buddy hire all the way whom Mr Loyalty stuck at WRC because he had nowhere else to put him even though he has NEVER ****ing coached the position before. EVER.
