Some of those training videos had me thinking he was definitely going to be ready at start of training camp. A month a has passed and he was limited in yesterday's minicamp so I'm a little less sure. But I'm still pretty doubtful it will be something that plays into the final roster decisions. I'll be a little disappointed/surprised if he's on PUP/IR.

I just found this quote from Diggs certainly seems like he plans on participating in Training camp, “That’s why I look forward to training camp. You know, training camp is when you put the pedal to the metal. But I’m going to do a lot, a lot of homework prior to getting there.”

If he is truly healthy and I have no reason to doubt he is, him and Milton on the inside? Good luck with that. Every single down is going to be a nightmare for the opposing offenses.

Yeah for two guys in Barmore and Williams who already know they have the money in the bank, it was fun seeing this from Barmore several weeks back:

Boutte still has practice squad eligibility, I think, so they might hold onto Bourne and stash Boutte, but I think Bourne has to prove he can do it in camp or Hollins is the new McD favorite.

People are convinced that guys like Boutte and or Chism won't pass through waivers. I am not sure that is true. At least not yet.

The reason why they would keep an extra lineman on the roster is because they could be tweaking the line up the first month of the season trying to find the best line up and rotation players. That is why they would keep more linemen than WRs.

I think that we should consider the situation if the four top WR's make the 53 and are the ones that are active each week. Diggs and Williams are our top 2. Douglas is our starter in the slot. Hollins is a change of pace receiver and our protector on special teams.

1) So, who do we want to carry that we will likely be inactive in every game, absent injuries?

2) Who do we want to have inactive and capable of starting if someone is injured? Bourne, Boutte, Polk, Chism, Baker?

3) Do we want to carry a developmental #6 WR? Boutte, Polk, Chism, Baker?

Once again you are underestimating Chism3. He won’t just make the 53, he will be active every week, and he will be their starting slot receiver by midseason at the latest. He’s going to be Drake Maye’s Julian Edelman.

Was Mayo truly elite when he played with pats or was he just a middling guy who got more praise than what he should have. At least HT was directly responsible for 2 plays that won us the Superbowl ( strip sack + legendary goal line stop of beast mode lynch ). Mayo????

Mayo was definitely elite, but his career only lasted five seasons due to injuries. He also played a different position than Hightower, Mayo was 230 pounds… a weakside LB.

He was an exceptional athlete. Average his stats out over ten or more healthy years and he is a HOF player. He was a sht coach, but no need to diminish him as a player.

I think it's a little more than just injury insurance. There's also the hope of returning to form now well over a year removed from ACL injury and back in a system he did well in. How realistic is that hope, along with injury insurance would seem to be worth that expense especially since most of it is sunk cost already.

Him and Boutte are in a funny spot because they are probably better than most of the kids right now but the kids represent a hope of their own too. I'm Probably not being entirely fair to lump Boutte in with Bourne because he's still young enough that he could overcome his perceived ceiling but my own opinion is last year was probably about what his ceiling is.

but Chism keeps showing his potential and I'm pretty sure once I see it myself during TC and preseason it will be easy to join the hype train.

From what I'm hearing he is picking up the offense well. A JMD offense runs through the slot so smarts are key.

Edelman also had great players ahead of him on the depth chart and had to convert from QB to WR. He had Welker in front of him… there weren’t a lot of snaps available for him in the slot.

Great/good players sometimes have to wait. After Wes left the team signed Amendola to fill that slot role but Danny couldn’t stay healthy… that’s when Jules got his opportunity.

The 2025 Patriots don’t have Welker, Moss, Branch, Hernandez… guys who command targets in the middle in the field. They have Douglas, but Demario has versatility to move around and speed to play elsewhere. They could use a dedicated slot WR.

The Pats need talented WR’s, this is the what the weapons crowd has been clamoring over for years now. Chism has to prove it with pads on, this isn’t football… but he has an opportunity.

He won't be Edelman. He lacks the pure straight line speed Edelman has which made him a threat anywhere on the field. So he will never be as good as Edelman was. But he can be elite within his skill set. I don't care if he never has an 80 yard TD catch. He just needs to get first downs, and he can do that.

While the comparisons to Edelman are fun. I honestly think Amendola or Welker is the better comparison. Amendola was a good WR, but never broke 700 yards and his career long catch was 57 yards. Welker' career long (outside of that fluky 99 yarder was 64. He had many good years where his longest catch was less than 50 yards. But he just got open and got first down after first down. Of course he was a machine in the slot.

From just the eye test he looks closer to Welker as far as skill set, but i'm not predictiong that kind of production. As crazy as it is to say, I think Chism is more NFL ready than any of those 3 were coming out. Him being such a 1 dimensional player probably has a lot to do with that. He either beats you doing his thing, or he doesn't. That isn't to say his game has no naunce. He has several fakes and moves in his arsenal, but it all comes down to the same simple route tree over and over again. But you don't need a complex tree or to do 10 things well to be effective. having 1 kind of skill set that is incredible hard to defend is a totally viable strat. And if he plays the rare defender good enough to stay with him most of the game, that's fine cause he isn't the guy you need to pay a lot of money to keep. Even Welker was never particularly highly paid. The slot WR is still undervalued to this day.

Thats the way i remember him, smart, fast and hard hitting. Except as you point out he was injured a lot because of it.

He missed 5 games his first 5 years. Then it really fell off and he had a hard time staying on the field. To me that's not necessarily soft it's more just a really rough sport and position that ended his career early. Now I'm not denying it either just saying I think people throw that label around so easy without consideration for just how brutal the sport is. There obviously are guys that are soft and maybe a tougher player lasts longer than Mayo or maybe he was tough and the injuries were just too debilitating. He did try for three more years and his body just wouldn't hold up.

I’m not sure where this question came from, but he was not elite. When you think of elite LB’s during that time, the names you think of were Patrick Willis, Navarro Bowman, Luke Kueckly and Bobby Wagner. Then there was everyone else like Mayo.

He was a stat collector who made little impact. Anyone who cares to re-watch the games you’ll see how slow he is reacting to plays and awful in space. He was really bad against Seattle in 2012. He was constantly chasing guys downfield despite having a decent line for a few years and Vince Wilfork his entire career. He rarely had a “wow” play.

Hated the pick in 2008 and Clady should’ve been the pick who was not only heavily mocked to the Pats, but also given what just happened in the prior Super Bowl. Curtis Loften was a way better value in that 2nd round.
