Brady walked off the field against KC after his knee injury.
Consider this a minor quibble if you will, but it would be more accurate to say Brady was helped off the field by the trainers, with his arms spread across their shoulders for support after the dirty hit by pollard... He did not walk off the field unassisted...

Not that any of the LBs were strong in coverage but without digging up the nightmare of last year was Ellis our best coverage guy?
I think your right. Elliss is someone who got better with playing time, he read things better and even though he got beat too he was always right there with the TE usually, wich he could have easily had more pass break ups than completions. He's a budding player and I expect him to thrive under Vrabel. As I've posted.. we need to strengthen the farm system so we can stay competitive year in and out and replacing guys as they age out, or move on in FA. Elliss is part of the farm system.

Because at the time he’d have a $6.4M dead cap hit. Now it’s more manageable at $3.5M after June 1st. His injury couldn’t have come at a worse time.
The dead cap hit doesn’t change, it just gets spread out.
That doesn’t make a difference ultimately the wayour cap is now.

Ellis was pretty bad all of last year. He seemed to not have much awareness in any phase. He was often out of position in the running game and seemed confused in coverage.
They must have seen something in him to match the raiders overpay, but if he plays this year like he did last year, it was a bad signing.

I like Tavai and think he's a good veteran player, that can provide solid depth at LB and he was starting next to spillane. That is telling how valuable Vrabel thinks he is.
We need younger players like Ellis, Gibbens and Mapu (if he's playing LB) to step up because some of the other guys are going to start slowing down soon. Spillane is 30, Tavai 29, Landry 29. I bet we draft an LB early in 2026.

He -did- lead the team in tackles last year.

By a fair amount actually. And he was only 4 tackles behind Bentley in 23.
I wouldn't hang my hat on the fact that he was a a stat leader on a bottom half of the league defense. If he stays he stays I hope he contributes and is not a liability.

I agree with this. I was amazed when they matched the Raiders overpay. We will see if he develops and earns that money.

Your right. Don't forget we drafted Swinson, however I'm sure Vrabel is going to teach him how to play ILB as well as edge. Like Vrabel did.

Elliss and gibbens continue to improve is and would be a welcome sign going forward.. we have some depth, and some time left with Spillane LBs can have career spans into thier mid 30s.. Bruschi played until 34. Did we sign any UDFA LBs?

All the LBs were pretty bad last year. With an expended role last year Elisss played respectable. His game got better as the season went on where everyone else not named gonzo on defense packed it in. He will have a chance to grow his game under some real coaching.

Didn’t read all the responses. Just came here to say, he needs to know his place.

Sorry, I couldn’t sleep tonight if I didn’t get that out.

I disagree. I did not see respectable we got shredded and he was a big reason. I did not see improvement.
Interesting that you say everyone else was packing it in but the guy who was playing poorly wasn’t

I looked it up and confirmed teams have the opportunity to spread it out over two years post June 1st. If they release or trade a player prior to June 1st, the entire hit is applied for the current season.

Interesting …also the „batches“ …

Only 3 top ‚impact‘ LBs;
6 B-level;
11 C-grades …..?

I know nothing about ProFootballImpact - is this reliable analysis or pure subjective guesswork by amateurs?
Know nothing either. Didn’t say would hang my hat on it, just find it interesting. If the guesswork was mostly on name recognition, don’t think Elliss would be there.

Feel pretty good regardless with Spillane, Elliss and Gibbens on the inside.

Speaking of Elliss, thought did well out there and came into his own last year. Not necessarily rangy, but he seemed to usually put himself in great position and not get caught in the wash too often like we’ve seen with Bentley, Tavai, etc in recent years.

Edit: Just saw this and found it interesting

Interesting. Looking forward to seeing him build on that in 2025.

Might add one in 2026 FA if there's a decent to capable of being excellent one in his Mid-20's to be had.
