Wasn’t strange’s fifth year option like $18m or something ridiculous like that? I wouldnt read much into that, wed have been crazy to pick it up.

Edit: otc projected it as 16.5m. Somehow his projection is as high or higher than guys like olave, garrett wilson, Jordan davis, drake london. If it’s anything close to that easy choice to not pick it up.

That should be of no shock to anyone. He is coming off a serious injury and needs to prove he's recovered enough to perform at at LEAST the same level he was pre-patella tendon tear. This isn't news or tells us anything. Strange will be fighting for his professional life just like the rest of the LG prospects.

(and this might include Owenu as well if he doesn't come to camp in shape)

I agree. They can try to re-sign him if they like what they see, and if they can’t it’s not a big deal.

I’m not surprised, he hardly played, it wasn’t his fault he got seriously injured.

I think this is going to be a prove it year for a bunch of these guys, mostly those with the bigger contracts. And IIRC most of those deals are pretty friendly to the Patriots if they cut bait with them next year. That will add a bunch of cap space for them to work with, but may also create some holes they will need to address.

If he is good this season, its just so much cheaper to extend him or offer a new contract rather than pay $16+ million.
If he's good, he'll go out and get the best deal he can get on the open market. Or should he just take whatever we offer him after declining got pick up a 5th year and having him fight for his starting position (as will certainly happen).

Even if Onwenu plays well this year, and another player emerges as good if not better at RG, Onwenu could get traded or cut given his contract, and combined with the fact that his near RT money extension what not Vrabel's doing.

I'm not that high on Sow. I think he lacks the athleticism to be an everyday starter.
I am not sure what you mean by athleticism. Sow's RAS score after the combine was a 9.72 which is very high, some might say exceptional. Sow tests very high on raw physical athletic traits.

That's pretty good scores. I'm just saying the way he moves just doesn't strike me as good enough for a starting level guard. He could prove me wrong but I just don't see it right now.

Why not cut them both. They both suck.
Let's see them after Doug Marrone's Coaching... Siddy Sow regressed under Mayo and Robinson was a Rookie. Year Two for Robinson; year Three for Sow: players can improve.

I don't understand how Robinson/Sow should be viewed as in the driver seat of any competition. Strange hasn't lived up to his draft status, but he's been "meh". Robinson/Sow have been trash. I do think that they probably would PREFER one of Robinson/Sow beat Strange out simply because of contract status, and I could see a world where, if it was somewhat close, they'd take the hit on the field by trading/cutting Strange just to give the guy with longer contract a look. But make no mistake about who's in the pole position to start until Robinson/Sow prove they aren't terrible. Their fringe roster guys at this point.
I guess I don't see either Sow or Robinson as trash. both have had poor coaching and scheme to date. both have had injuries. both have had some good games. some bad games. but the talent is there for both. up to the staff to bring it out consistently.

I think Strange is an average to maybe above average OG. he has missed a lot of time. he is more than likely at his ceiling.

simply, I think both Sow and Robinson might not yet be better players than Strange, but can be.

I keep harping on the amount of draft capital we've spent on the guard position. Between Strange, Robinson and Sow the law of averages would would dictate that at least one of them would emerge as an adequate starter.

Across the league O Line development isn't what it used to be with the lack of live practice reps.

There are the two sides of the coin, his side and the team's side.

Clearly the team isn't confident he'll recover well enough to justify giving him a $16M contract with injury guarantees (like all 5th year extensions have) for next season at this point in time.

There quite possibly is some 'carrot and stick' going on, maybe overtly, maybe not.

Of course this might piss off the player. He may see it as lack of support at a time he really needs such support. Yet the team knows this, and did it anyway.

To me it again says they don't think he'll be playing at a high level one year from now, certainly not high enough to want to bet $16M of next year's payroll to lock him in.

If that's how it plays out, it's a damn shame.

If he 'shocks the world' and plays at a super-high level, there's always the threat of the franchise tag to keep his demands inline with the market.

To me, this all reads as a future injury settlement candidate rather than a franchise tag candidate.

If this move pissed off Strange and he sulks thats oozes of entitlement. He hasn't done anything to deserve the $16m kiss.

In that case, by way of Vrabes new order, he's gone and should be.

If he puts his head down, stays healthy, and has a solid year he'll make that up here or somewhere else.

I'd agree that Sow/Robinson have talent. But your point about bad coaching/scheme and injuries, don't dispute that they've ben trash it just offers a possible explanation that leaves room for optimism. I agree with that actually. I see some developmental potential in both, but they've just flat out been trash NFL players so far no matter what reason you want to give for that, so I don't see how they should be viewed as in the driver seat for any competition.

I think we can argue a lot about who has earned what, fair treatment of injury situations, etc.

I don't think it's much of an argument around someone being pissed off about having $16M that was coming their way being taken off the table.

But indeed how they handle it matters a lot. If they act entitled and they sulk, they get sent packing sooner rather than later. If they bear down, work through the recovery plan and become an asset, they will get offers from us and from others. If they can't recover, sadly, that's the end of their time in the NFL.

Overall, since we yanked the $16M, our team feels it's probably not going to be a full recovery and on to the next contract.
