Patriots Player Departure Joe Cardona released

He's only 33 and longsnapper isn't exactly the most demanding job. He could easily do it as long as kickers do which is like late 30's.
I agree.

I hope they see an equivalent value in Ashby because Cardona was really the standard.

If Cardona wants to continue playing he will have plenty of offers.

Need roster space. Only room for one LS.

Wonder if he will retire? Would not surprise me.
No. They didn't need the roster space as they were at 90 with Cardona.
You need 2 LS for camps.

The last two such players (Andrews and Bentley) were both ultimately released with failed physical designations, so I'm going to guess that Ashby's drafting and Cardona's release might be a shock to us, but not to Cardona.
Bentley and Andrews finished last year on the IR. Cardona finished the season on the 53.

No, they’re still looking to add more UDFAs so they need the roster space. They will be churning the back end of the roster until final cutdowns. So they’ll have a continuing need for roster space.

This situation reminds of when I was in grad school. I had a fellowship that paid quite well for 4 years but in my final year, they switched me to a TA ship that paid less.

The union stepped in and insisted that I not get a paycut. The administration told me, sorry but we don't have a line for you since this would be a violation of the union contract. I was out of a job. Almost. Until some reasonable minds fixed things.

Cardona is still relatively young; there should be no deterioration. I imagine it's just his salary as a vet.

1.25m? You think that's an issue? When the Pats have 60M in cap space?

There are so many OTHERS that could have been cut before Cardona.
Monty Rice, Jon Jiles, Jeremiah Pharms, DJ James, Miles Battle, Truman Jones, Layden Robinson, Tyrese Robinson, Jack Westover, Terrell Jennings.

But please. Go on about needing space for more UDFA. Because it shows that you really haven't looked at the roster to know where the easy cuts are.

Agree. This was about age and maybe culture (Mike's guys and no BB guys allowed). I also wonder if his commitments to the US Navy had something to do with it (missing practices, time committed to the team, etc). I've never heard of it being an issue before but who knows.

Who played with Brady as a Patriot, no. [Carlton Davis played with him in Tampa.]

So...Vrabel has 3 SB rings (2001, 2003, and 2004)...McD has 3 SB rings (2014, 2016, and 2018)...Carlton Davis has 1 ring.... and that is it, right?

He was the oldest guy on the team, they dealt with some blocked kicks last year, he earned 1.5M AAV for a long snapper… it’s not that deep.

Morgan Moses is 34. Cardona just turned 33.

The difference in cap is 1.5AAV to 840K. So, you're talking 660K.

The blocked kicks weren't on Cardona. They were on the guys on the line who got beat.

If the team noticed a drop off that means more than age. A slow or low snap can create a blocked kick situation. Either way half the money and a future long snapper is a no lose.

Of the guys who played with Brady, yes. Milton Williams has a ring from this year, of course.

There are others (e.g., Deron Mayo has one from 2018), but it's only Vrabel and Davis as players.

So, not counting the Krafts…we only have 8 rings between 4 guys….5 rings between 3 players…and 2 active players with 2 rings.

The 2018 team alone had 65ish rings that year plus more for some multiple ring guys (e.g. Brady/Belichick had +5 each)…..

Cardona was an easy cut. You just don’t like it. He’s an older player that’s a carryover from a different culture, and his replacement was just drafted. Very easy cut.

Age and culture. Apparently a big part of Vrabel’s culture is total focus on football, which the Navy doesn’t allow. It’s a culture thing. Even if it doesn’t get in the way of any football commitments it means he can’t be thinking football 24x7. Made him an easy cut as soon as his replacement was drafted.

The issue is that there didn't really seem to be a point in drafting his replacement. As I said earlier, I am sure that Vrabel et al. spent time analyzing all the guys they had, because it's definitely a choice to spend a draft pick on this guy instead of, say, Larison (whom they ended up guaranteeing even more money to sign as an UDFA). We're just wondering why Vrabel decided before the draft that moving on from Cardona was the right thing to do.

It is just a stylistic change. Cardona was mainly snap and block. Ashby is more of an athlete than Cardona and they will probably use him like a gunner after the snap.

Seems pretty clear Vrabel wants to cut ties to the dynasty and Super Bowls. Three captains and Super Bowl winners from that 2018 team outright cut, and the other two were not re-signed. The only reason Vrabel wasn't my top choice (Ben Johnson was) is because I wanted to get away from the dynasty and let this new iteration of the Patriots build something new. David Andrews is one of my all-time favorite Patriots, but I am happy we have pushed past anyone tied to the tail end of the run. Vrabel has the gravitas where he doesn’t have to consistently lean on the rings to get his message to land the way McDaniels and Patricia seemed to do as head coaches.

It has nothing to do with like/dislike. That's you projecting BS on people you have no clue about.

I guarantee you that the NAVY Culture is far more intense than anything that Vrabel has in store.

As CTPatsfan77 pointed out, there wasn't a NEED for a LS. The issues last year were on the guys on the line. Not Cardona. Anyone breaking down the blocked punts can see that.
