The Athletic's Dane Brugler's draft profile for Kyle Williams:

STRENGTHS:
● Explosive driving off line of scrimmage
● Varies release package to shake defenders and get vertical
● Makes dynamic speed cuts to create separation out of breaks
● Short-area burst to skirt tacklers and turn short gains into big plays
● Tracks ball downfield and can take it out of the air
● NFL scouts gave strong character feedback based on how teammates felt about him
● In 2024, posted third-most receiving yards in a season in Washington State history
WEAKNESSES:
● Unassuming size, strength and body bulk
● Small hands and will have occasional concentration drop
● Can get hung up versus press and outdone physically mid-route
● Doesn't have body strength to shake of tacklers
● Hurries into stem releases and will benefit with a more controlled setup
● Mediocre blocker — bigger defenders will discard him
● Didn't play on special teams in college
● Injured his hamstring at the Combine, which sidelined him for the pro day

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Washington State, Williams was the X receiver in offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle's Air Raid scheme (74.0 percent of snaps wide, 25.3 percent in the slot). He was a steady pass catcher over three seasons at UNLV, then blossomed in Pullman the past two years while catching passes from Cam Ward in 2023 and John Mateer in 2024. He finished the 2024 season No. 4 in the FBS with 14 receiving touchdowns (one behind Colorado's Travis Hunter and Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith).

Williams is quick to uncover near the line or win downfield — he posted an outstanding success rate (58.3 percent) on throws of more than 20 yards in 2024. The next step in his development will be to polish his route steps to better harness his athletic traits. Overall, Williams might not stand out with his size or play strength, but he compensates for that with his ability to accelerate to top gear rapidly and create catchable windows for his quarterback. With more seasoning, he can become a WR 2/3 for an NFL offense.

Regardless of how Williams pans out in the NFL, can we agree this was a good WR pick for the Pats?

The first in a long time.

He could be a 3rd round steal.

Bledsoe’s new fav Pats player

I really like the pick. But I have questions about why Williams over Noel ? Almost everyone had Noel rated higher than Williams. And it seems the Pats did a lot of visiting with Noel. I just hope it doesn’t become another McConkey/Polk situation where they wind up with the lesser player.

Luckily Williams has great speed and can get separation.

Williams had approximately 75% of his snaps out wide and 25% in the slot whereas with Noel that was reversed. It's either that or they had them both graded similarly like me and had to choose one.

Great point. The Noel/Williams comparison is one we'll have to keep an eye on. I can't imagine it will be as stark as LMC/Polk.

Will the curse be broken this year for earlier round WR’s? Each year this board gets excited for the new WR only to get the red flags early in training camp and turn on him.

Williams is also more of a threat after the catch

I won’t get excited about another WR we drafted until I see them play.

Aside from some pillock at NESN who said he “hated” the Kyle Williams pick, it seems to be universally appreciated.
