Ashton Jeanty @ 4?

Daniel Jeremiah said that we should take Jeanty at 4 if Hunter and Carter are gone. My biggest worry is our OL. I’m a huge Saquon fan. He was probably better as a receiver than runner in NY. I feel our lack of OL will really hurt his development. I also don’t think he’s the HR hitter Barkley is. Saquon hit big plays against OSU, Michigan and in Rose Bowl. Not sure Jeanty is that type of back. Ashton may actually be slightly better in run game. Maybe, a bit better run instincts.

I trade down if no Cater/Henry and draft Tyler Warren. Bigger WR at 38. Look what Gronk and AHern did for 2010 squad.
I think if the team's plan was to take Jeanty, even as a backup plan to losing H&C, they would have gone bigger on OL this offseason.

Three thoughts on Jeanty:

1. He's an interesting test of the validity of BPA. If you truly believe in BPA then shouldn't you be drafting Jeanty at 3? I've started to think that BPA is a flawed philosophy. BPA, based upon whose board? If it's your own teams board then you can construct that how you wish and on how you feel about positional value, character, injury risk etc. However, in that instance, BPA is meaningless to fans because there is no consensus big board.

2. It would be quite funny if the only reason we were looking so heavily at RBs in this draft was because we were trying to judge how they stack up against Jeanty and weren't interested in them at all. We were interested in Jeanty all along.

3. I don't think we'll draft Jeanty. One reason I'd like it though, other than his remarkable talent, is that it would signify a generational shift in offensive philosophy. This would become an offense centred around a bell-cow RB and a play-action passing scheme. That would be the Vrabel offense, one not too dissimilar to the Titans Vrabel offense. That would, at the very least, be interesting.

We know the talent is there with Jeanty. Nobody is arguing that. It's the value he represents as a RB. We drafted Rhamondre in 2021 and we are already looking for his replacement. If they feel he's the next Barry Samders than by all means select him. But you'll be looking for his replacement before his rookie deal is up in 4 years.

I've always thought running backs have to be SPECIAL to go top half of round one (bottom half is different, because the 5th year on the rookie contract is reasonable for a good player). Jeanty's movements through drills is stunning. Absolutely perfect body control, lean, shifts in momentum, acceleration, footwork -- no wonder he bounced off so many tackles. I worried maybe he just played bad defenses, but he's legitimate.

I would still prefer a slight trade down to pick up a 2nd or 3rd, but I'm coming around to taking him in the top ten. Superstar with incredible potential. Get the line run-blocking and building confidence. Steamroll opponents. Ease in the WRs. Winning formula?

However, in that instance, BPA is meaningless to fans because there is no consensus big board.
The "consensus board" thats put out all the combined media boards is about as on point as it gets. It was almost 85% accurate in the first round last year I believe. Like 82-83%.

Also I think people need to come around to the fact that "need" is usually always factored in. From the first pick to the last. There's just too much money involved to constantly go BPA.

Lastly I think if you're going to pick a RB that high they should be a monster pass blocking. That was one of the big issues in NY with Barkley. Teams were teeing off in the backfield too often with him in there.

When Kenneth Walker transferred from Wake Forest to Michigan State, his ability to make people miss and make yardage after contact took a lousy OL and—voila!—turned it into something good.

Jeanty could do the same thing in New England. ELITE balance. I love this kid even more than I did Brock Bowers last year.

And shortly after last year’s draft I was still on the Deliverance banjo for a redraft of trading out of our early pick.

There are several players that’ll be available IF Hunter or Carter aren’t available. Teaming up a great young QB with a great young RB, wouldn’t be the worst thing. Jeanty is as close to a sure thing as anyone in this draft. Then we’d HAVE to get a LT in the 2nd round, ignoring receivers and TEs. It’s a double edged sword. Whoever you take at 4, will make a huge impact on the rest of the the draft. I wouldn’t be upset landing Jeanty though. I’ve watched him live, and was blown away by everything he does. His vision, strength, speed, all elite. But like I said, double edged sword, who’s gonna block for the kid ?

Ideally, Hunter, LT WR & TE are what we get in the first 3 rounds. RB isn’t a massive need. But if they take Jeanty because Hunter & Carter are gone, like I said, I wouldn’t be upset.

Jeanty’s season was just mental.

This needs to be repeated until we get some hype for this pick.

I'm terrified we're going to pass on a HOF running back to draft an average NFL left guard at 4.

Does anyone remember Boise State ever having a top college offense before him? This is like watching Ladanian Tomlinson come out of TCU all over again... Only people are determined to pass on him to draft a positionless offensive lineman who didn't even stand out among his peers... Gah.

Totally reasonable take...

However the miss rate of this front office is so incredibly high that I'm advocating for the most extreme KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID (K.I.S.S.) approach to fix their woes.

Jeanty walks into the building and is your best running back, your future 3rd down back, and arguably your best offensive player Day 1. Isn't that what you want from your first round pick?

We have the worst front office in the league for a reason... Just KISS and put up some W's boys.

I'm warming up to the idea of Jeanty. Yes there are other good backs, but he is clearly blue chip head and shoulders above the rest of the class.

Another vote for Jeanty at #4.
I understand the argument of trying to trade back to grab him but I think he's just too good to risk that. Many have him as the #1 ranked player on their boards.

I just think they’d have done more on the OL in FA if they were contemplating Jeanty. Do what the Bears did for example. I’d be comfortable with a Jeanty pick because it establishes for the next five years what this team will be. Defense first, run the ball often, play action deep passing game.

Draft him. Vrabel already has a good idea if any of the OT's on the team can be counted on at LT. As expected if there isn't one, in order this is what they do (could combine):

1. Trade up to the 20-25 pick of round 1 for a LT that has the right traits to develop into a LT only, don't need another OG.
2. Trade for an aging/overpaid LT to hold the fort
3. Draft/sign a block first TE and use him to chip the Edge/DE that's over the LT.
4. Go to 3 step drop/RPO offense to limit exposure of LT.
5. Use Jeanty on every passing down and less than 50% of the other O plays to not overuse him.
