The other part of this whole situation was Tom's evolution as a global brand and as a person. He felt he deserved to be treated differently. I think if Bill adjusted the dynamic of his relationship with Tom to be more symbiotic and not coach/player, there might have been a chance he stayed. Obviously, Bill never wanted (or was capable) to change how he treated Tom and that was that. That led to the whole "I pled the 5th" comment, the passive aggressive doc Tom produced, and the meeting w/ Ross in Miami. Tom had had it thus the "tension". With that said, by Bill "changing" to appease one player and in his estimation that meant he was giving up his ability to govern the team.....and he wasn't doing that under any circumstance and I understand why. From his own words.. he had it in his mind for a few seasons.. especially when the Guerr situation happened.
Look at history. People seem not know that every HoF coach had an uneasy/dysfunctional relationship with their HoF QB. Noll/Bradshaw. Landry/Staubach. Lombardi/Starr. Walsh/Montana. Brown/Graham....
The relationship BB and Tom had was the norm - not the exception.
