NFL Draft Talk

I’m somewhat intrigued by Central Arkansas DE David Walker. Ultra productive rusher. Last 3 seasons…(150+ pressures in under 1,000 rush snaps, 16% pressure rate, 37 sacks…) That being said, the level of competition (FCS) is a factor here. Also, his height (6’0”) & arm length (31-32 inches) could limit his ability a bit. He tested pretty well & has good athleticism, but he needs to improve in run defense. He can surprisingly cover pretty well. Has good play strength @ 263. He did very well at the Senior Bowl. He also has an array of rush moves that’ll seemingly translate at the next level. One thing I’m not thrilled about is his age: He’ll be 25 at the start of the season. He reminds me of Brandon Graham/Olivier Vernon type.

I tend to agree with you. Drake Maye being upright is critical.

Unfortunately because we failed to address LT last season, and then Ronnie Stanley & the rest weren't actually available this season, we've put ourselves in a corner where we have to go O line at the expense of a blue chip stud like Jeanty, which is poor management - if Campbell gets moved to guard and Jeanty is All-Pro... well you can imagine.

Ideally, we could trade up for a LT but it's difficult because there are many teams with the same plan. Every teams forum has the same idea - "we can trade back into R1 for player X". Normally only 1 or 2 teams can manage it if they're lucky.
there are 3 LT's that teams will compete for in the last half of the first round (Simmons, Conerly and Ersery). We don't know which will be drafted by those who already have the picks and which teams will be lucky enough to be able to trade for one of LT's (and perhaps not the one that they really want).

So, there are a total of 6 LT's and many teams wanting them. And perhaps not all of them will be starters at LT.
======
BTW, are we happy with any of the six?

I am not sure about Warren at #4, but Jeanty is a fair comment. This assumes that Carter and Hunter are gone - otherwise they are BPA. BPA is not specific to offense or defense, so the BPA at #4 might be Graham.

Trading up or down changes the BPA dynamic. The offensive option is Jeanty OR a LT OR a trade. You did not mention a trade which a lot of posters have recommended. For example after a trade down to #9 or #12, the Pats might add an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder, and then the BPA might align with a LT who is available. So the whole situation is fluid, not static like Jeanty, Warren, or a LT.
Trade down would be great but finding a partner offering fair value is fsr from certain. Many experts (so called) have said the talent level between 4-20 is very similar
Doubt any one is trading up to get Sanders

So, you are saying that if a team is currently picking 20th, that they wouldn't trade anything move up to 4th?

How about 8th, 9th or 10th?

If we are considering draft a LT at 4, even though the value is similar to picks at 20, then surely we should be accepting even a 4th to move down a bit.

As is always the case, the question is NOT whether we want to mov down, but rather the question is how much are willing accept.

I suspect that we like Campbell much better than the other, but perhaps not. Maybe we would be very happy to have a 3rd plus our choice of what is there at 10 or 15.
========
The other implication of your position is also interesting. You are saying no one would give a 3rd or 4th to move from say 10th or 15th to move up for
Graham
Sanders
McMillan
Membou
Graham
Jeanty
Warren
I think that several teams in the top 15 would want to trade up for one of these players.

Essentially you are saying that neither Campbell nor Membou is worth the #15 pick plus a 3rd. I disagree with that assessment.

Once again, Chad Reuter has Josh Simmons falling to the Pats at 38. His pick at 4 has changed from Hunter two weeks ago to Carter now. The tackles go 10, 11, 13, 24, 33, 38

4. Abdul Carter
38. Josh Simmons
69. Kaleb Johnson
77. Nohl Williams (Cal CB)
106. Jalen Royals (Utah State WR)
144. Joshua Gray (Oregon State G)

Was written before the Milton trade, and I’ll assume he would have given the Pats somebody different than who he had for the Cowboys there.

Yes please on Nohl Williams.

I agree finding a trading partner will be tough.

Everyone said that Nix, Penix, and McCarthy were limited, but now all three are starting this coming year. Do you remember when the experts were shocked that Atlanta selected Penix and called it a bad pick? Now of course there is egg all over the experts face because Atlanta is excited about Penix. It is the same with Sanders, the experts always are skeptical with their analysis but teams pick the QBs anyway.

After skipping a top 10 QB last year (and now looking silly), do you think the Giants will skip selecting a top 10 QB again this year?

My question is, what exactly is the plan for the Browns at QB? They have one QB on the roster right now in Kenny Pickett. They can't really trade for Kirk Cousin's contract considering what they have tied up in Deshaun Watson so do they really plan to go with a 2nd round receiver and suck for a shot at someone in 2026? I do wonder if all this talk about their interest in Carter and now Hunter is them hoping that someone trades up to 2 for either of them.

I think they are willing to run with Kenny pickett to start the season, but as far as the draft goes I think they want Milroe.

One thing to remember with regard to QB’s and the Draft: if a team thinks they’ve got a potential franchise guy at QB then they’re going to want to take him in the first round to secure that valuable 5th year team option. Good QB help is hard to find and teams will pay absurd amounts to average NFL starters to keep them around. Getting one on a rookie contract is gold. So even a developmental prospect like Milroe could be appealing at the end of the first round and we may see teams trying to trade back in for him. I could see Ward, Sanders, Dart, and Milroe all being taken in the first round, and then the next group (McCord, Ewers, Howard) might not go until the third round or later.

That is what I think happens, Cleveland trade up from 33 to get milroe. Especially if they take Hunter at 2, trying to replicate Ryan Williams with Hunter. lol

It could happen though I wonder if the Browns just take Sanders at 2 instead. As Colorado’s OC, Pat Shurmur runs a West Coast style offense similar to what Kevin Stefanski runs with the Browns, and Stefanski has some history with Shurmur. Stefanski learned working under Brad Childress with the Vikings. Childress has history working with Shurmur and them both learning from Andy Reid during their time with the Eagles. Stefanski and Shurmur worked a year together with the Vikings too.

All of this to say Sanders seems like a natural fit for the offense Stefanski wants to run. I think most people would agree Hunter and Carter are the top two prospects in this draft, but everyone seems convinced that the Titans are going QB with their first pick anyway, rather than getting Hunter/Carter and then getting a QB at 35. That might be because those four names at QB may be gone by then and it would be too troublesome to try to trade back up when they can solve their QB problem without the additional cost. We’ve seen QBs without elite physical traits go at the top of the draft (Bryce Young and Jared Goff for example). It may sound like copium but there’s still a fair chance Sanders goes to the Browns.

Good view of the situation. I put more into the relationship between Rees and Milroe and Hunter being more impactful as a WR then Sanders at QB, imo. I am not very high on Sanders, I am not high on Milroe either but he was better in 2023 with Rees at OC than in 2024.

Your view is probably closer to reality than mine

Good point. I forgot Rees was Milroe’s OC & QB coach at Alabama. That’s a more direct relationship. I think the Browns have to be the favorites for Milroe late in the first or early in the second if they skip on Sanders at #2.

I hope you are right though. 2 QBS in top 3 would help us immensely. I would love Carter or Hunter even though I have questions about both

Skattebo has Patriots written all over him. And I'd love it! He's like a combo of Woodhead & Edelman in a Develin body.
And he'd push Rham to not sleep-walk through every snap and fall down at first contact

Milton was either dumb as rocks or had a bad relationship with Maye.
Or was pushing the fact he he should start too much.
Or Wolf and Kraft was livid he beat the bills.

Which one is the most likely?
