I’m wild guessing we still have about 60 mill left.
That would be about the 6th most to start free agency of all teams.
We still have a whole off season to go over and above adding

Wiliams
Spillane
Morgan
Davis
Dobbs
Tonga

If we had those 5 starters last year, plus Vrabel and Josh how much better would we have been?

Now we basically have a full off season class to come in over and above them

I was about to make this thread to try to keep track of everything. We started at 125M in cap space. We need something like 15M for the draft/Emergency fund/practice squad. So we have 110M to spend.

Add all that up based on my guesses and you get about 112M (not counting all potentially made incentives) . Then subtract 1M per player due to the 51 player rules and people already being on the roster.. So 112 - 20 = 92M Cap spent.

So we have around 110M - 92M = 18M left to spend... but we can get more with some if we need it pretty fast.

I’d like to see the OL get some more good talent infused through FA. Are there any good LT prospects still out there? That’s still top priority, but improving across the board is a good idea.

After that, sign one or two mid tier WR FAs eventually. Guys who came out of smaller college programs, and have played okay on their rookie contracts and have the tools to take a step up given the opportunity in the right environment. Won’t use lots of cap space and could give good ROI. Until we fix the OL spending what it will take to sign a top tier WR isn’t the best use of the money. Fix the OL first.

My guess is that they still roll over enough cap space to next year that it makes @Ring 6 blood boil lol

At a certain point they have to weight whether the money is better spent on the immediate return of a free agency day 2/3/4 signing this year or rolling it over to put towards pursuit of a day 1 free agent next year.

IMO, the roster needs a coverage FS worthy of playing time, a guy who can at least compete for the starting LT spot and someone who can capably line up as an X receiver. I think beyond that they have a roster they can trot out there and let young players/draft picks fight for role on. Then next year they repeat the process and try to add another FA haul to it. Hopefully draft well this year and next. And then I think we can be cooking with gas.

Why would you start from unrealistic? It doesn’t work that way, so why assume it does?

I think because they have so much cap space to spend they will take a little bigger year 1 hits than normal. Otherwise the increases would throw them over future caps.

Last line isn't true. Cap space gets rolled over if not used, so any money spent this year takes away from next year. If they have $15M of cap space to roll over this year, they'll have $10M less of cap space next year than if they roll over $25M. It's all interrelated year to year.

And I'm not advocating that they just refuse to fill out the depth chart. But they do have to weigh it at one point. All the guys they sign this year will, most likely, have cap hits balloon next year that they need to cover and they still need to add a few more day 1 of free agency type of signings to this team next year. It's all just math they need to weight out. What caliber of player are they getting this year and what cost? How much in house potential do they think they have at that spot?

IMO, the team desperately needs some type of coverage ability at FS, someone with real starting potential (or ideally track record) at LT and someone who can be a primary X receiver even if not a great one. Those are non negotiable roster needs IMO. They can't feel good about properly developing the guys we have without that baseline talent in place. Everything else, i think they have to start thinking a bit more about what they're getting vs. spending. If there's good value got for it, but also be conscious of spending just to spend there.

If they fill those 3 needs they are a competitive roster with poor depth. (They really need another IOL too).

Meh, I agree and disagree. Always pursue incremental progress but also keep in mind that this was the least talented team int he NFL last year and still needs to add a lot more guys who are viable long term starting caliber players. The further into free agency you get, the less of that there is. The more and more you move towards "depth" type of signings I think you have to weigh if better to put towards next year where there's a fresh crop of day 1 free agent talent.

Never pass up on good players/good deals. Sign those wherever you can. It's all just a balancing act and being honest about your evaluations and if you actually like the player or you just want to sign "someone".

So do you think they should convert every players salary to signing bonus and defer cap hits as much as possible so they can sign 30 free agents this year? Where do you draw the line?
