Patriots Player Departure Mike Reiss: David Andrews to be released (3/13 update: released)

Go after atlantas center,
As a Pats fan in Atlanta, I'm pretty familiar with Drew Dalman. The big question is what kind of scheme are the Pats going to run? Dalman in a wide zone scheme is elite; but he's undersized and would be a terrible fit if you're running power gap. Watching him with Chris Lindstrom or Matthew Bergeron double-teaming in space is awesome and he's terrific at hitting the second level, but if you want him to run block straight ahead against a nose tackle that's at least 30 pounds heavier than him, well that's just not going to work.

So don't go after Dalman unless he fits your scheme

Babz... but what does GrilledCheeseSandwich say?

These people take a logical assumption, 33 year old David Andrews who could save the Patriots a lot of money by being cut, might get cut... and just throw it at the wall.

If it happens, they broke the story, if it doesn't... just remember there's zero accountability in sport's journalism and someone will be liking this twitter handle in a few weeks.

Not actually a big surprise, it’s something that has been discussed in some places. Look at it like this:

- Andrews is older and is knocking on the door of retirement
- Andrews is coming off of a season ending injury
- You aren’t sure you can rely on him as your starter, and if you can, if he will hold up
- Even if he does, you probably won’t get more than 1 year out of him
- There are multiple quality free agent centers on the market who would be upgrades
- If you signed a center to replace him, he would probably not want to be a backup
- He can be released for fairly low dead money and around $2.5M cap space gained
- Releasing him now lets him find another team for a year or two if he wishes
Sure, we might sign a center to come for the center positions or we could draft one in the later rounds. For now, we have Strange as our starting enter with Jake Andrews and Brown as #2 and #3.

If we saw a quality starter that we could get, I suppose that we would jump at hm, and have Strange at LG.

I think Strange has similar issues - only signed for 1 year and injury prone. It’s wiser to start him at guard where things are far less disrupted if he gets hurt. He can be an emergency 3rd center.

I get it.

That would mean that we are looking for FOUR players who will be our starters, whether this year or next.

Why isn't Strange a better potential 2026-2028 starter at center than Andrews?

Move strange to center and sign teven jenkins to LG
The IoL FA class is kinda underwhelming and the C draft class isn’t great , I think this could indicate a move from strange to C

Tough seeing a great champion leave the organization this way but as the saying goes, it is what it is.
Don't laugh me off the forum RW.. lol.. but I really liked Benny brown.. and I guess the team did as well. He likely is the starting C.

Been watching reputable patriots news YouTube, even jumping in on NESN and local sports radio. NO ONE has this mentioned...
I thought we may see something in the Mike Reiss report but there does not seem to be anything there either.

Yeah I’m leaning toward it being bogus
Yeah.. and yesterday reiss. Curran were all on patriots pod cast doing a fundraising thing for Doug kyed and this was live. No news of this was spoken of.

Except cutting David Andrews doesn't really save them much money according to Spotrac.

This would be almost a JuJu level dump.

Why would they do it unless Andrews was completely done?

He probably is, talent-wise; I just don’t know if I can count on his health, and losing your starting center to injury is devastating. And he needs a new deal after this year.

I’d rather sign a veteran starting C who I know I can count on to be Maye’s guy for the next several years, and put Strange at guard. If Strange gets hurt then it’s not as detrimental to the offense.

Because he’s probably very close to done, and there are upgrades available in free agency, and he won’t want to be a backup.

Brown did ok. Not sure about his upside but he could develop into a pretty consistent starter.

Agreed is why I believe Vrabel identifying him and choosing to extend him is telling... one thing of note Vrabel was saying during combine week is that he has been watching tape on the entire roster...pharms, Austin, Eliss, brown, jacobs have been extended... why not Jones?... just interesting.
