I do not see any downside to this trade. They have 125 million which they will not be able to spend on quality players.
Thuney would bring leadership to OL and improve the guard play.
Whether it's Vrabel or Wolf or Kraft....if they want to try to get better they have to make some moves like this.

You have a point, obviously Vrabel weighed in and also probably did not want him.
To me it seems like a bad sign for next week and how aggressive they will or can be.
They need to spend to the cap, or at least very close. Even if not why piss away 16 mill that would carry forward?

It’s not the pick, it’s the cap hit, and more importantly the fact that there are much more necessary needs to fill.
Lol. He has one year left on his deal with a $16 million cap hit. That is less than 6% of this year's cap for a back to back All-Pro guard.

How is that pissing 16 million away?
He instantly improves the OL which helps Maye and the running game.
He is still a top 5 guard in NFL

He will get a huge raise.

But talk about going from the penthouse to the outhouse.

Yikes

We have far more important needs. 16 mill for a G is not a good use of our money.

I agree with you, but I think Teven Jenkins at 12-13 AAV is and it will be a lower cap hit year 1. Funny enough, Lance Zerlein compared him to Thuney in 2021 draft

Felger is absolutely roasting the Patriots for not getting Thuney, and, gulp, I agree with him. Is this a sign of another pathetic, penny pinching offseason in the offing?
Sure is. Vrabel has all the guys he needs to run his system. Bring in a few bottom of the barrel guys and call it a wrap. Offseason is practically over.

This team wont be pressed against the cap. Let’s stop using that as the be all end all in some of these discussions

4 days until the negotiating period and they have already failed with no chance at saving it. No Thuney, no Kirk, No Deebo, no Jonah Jackson. Is this really what we're doing? Does Vrabel even know what football is?

This was all sarcasm by the way and I hope they do not trade for Aiyuk or DK. There are moves to be made

It’s the same people who would complain to no end if they got those guys, so there’s that.

You're right that we won't be pressed against the cap, but that doesn't mean sign everyone.

Don’t worry, we won’t be signing everyone. Let’s worry about signing enough first to field a remotely competitive team.

Guys who complain about not making moves for 'names' are the guys who crown paper champs every year. They're Madden Ultimate Team guys who have no idea how REAL trades in the NFL work. It's not simply making a better offer. The player also has to want to go there. Even though TECHNICALLY these guys don't get to choose where they're traded to, they can make it clear the trade will be a bad one.

For what it's worth, some local writer in Chicago is gushing over the Bears trading for Thuney, lauding GM Ryan Poles and new HC Ben Johnson, citing this as an example of the Bears being more decisive/better.

Much of his analysis is based on Albert Breer's opinions, so take it with a grain or two of salt.

For a franchise used to slow action, backward and stupid thinking over the years, this is a drastic departure.
The examples are the trade for Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson and the overall ability of Ben Johnson to work with GM Ryan Poles efficiently and decisively before the free agency negotiating period has even begun.
How often in the past have the Bears been winners in toe-to-toe battles for a player?
Yet Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported in an interview on NBC Sports Boston's Boston Sports Tonight that the Bears won a battle over the Patriots and prevented Thuney from a homecoming in New England. Breer painted a picture where the Bears had conviction about Thuney and the Patriots sounded like the Bears always have. They waffled about and were unwilling to go an extra minor step to get the player they wanted.

Bears beat writers must just be happy they're bringing anyone in they've ever heard of.
