Offseason player acquisition thread

It is crazy that Purdy is likely to be the highest paid player in the NFL in a few weeks or months. He isn't that good. He is good enough to be good when he has a great situation. The 49ers might be better off signing Sam Darnold and trading Purdy. Darnold has shown he can be great in a near perfect situation (at least until the playoffs).

I am starting to be convinced that when drafting a QB that you are better off him being a bust than him just being good to very good. You gotta pay through the nose for "just being good to very good" when contract time comes around.
Purdy is better than Darnold, that's why he already beat him out in San Francisco.

Why would you downgrade your quarterback?

OK, I shouldn't make fun. Obviously, it is POSSIBLE that we might find a GM stupid enough to make such a trade.
While I definitely get what your saying. I remember when Buffalo traded Lynch and he became beast mode in Seattle. Rham not that I want him traded becuase under a real OL he could be a 1,200 yards back.

Drake Maye showing he has the potential to be an elite QB. Mike Vrabel replaced Jerod Mayo. Pretty much everything changed. The Pats are more attractive to a WR right now than Pittsburgh where he only wanted to go the last time.
True but I’m just saying the number one complaint about playing here is the weather it seems. Which you can’t really change. But yeah the other stuff definitely helps. Still not going to make DK happy if he’s dealt here.

if we win, he puts up big plays and Maye balls and Vrab and Josh value him
He will become happy.

I know it is a different position, but Jamaal Charles tore his ACL in 2011 and rushed for 1,509 yards and 5 TDs in 2012.

Jeremy Maclin tore his ACL in 2013 and had 1318 yards and 10 TDs in 2014. Both were career highs.

Gronk tore his ACL and MCL in 2013 and had 1124 yards and 12 TDs in 2014. And his injury was in mid December.

Not every player bounces back the next year, but it happens.

And the Pats don't need Aiyuk to be 100% in 2024 if he can be a 1300 yard receiver again in 2025.
No Thanks Rob, I'm not paying 30M to HOPE he's ok and being a stud.
He's not a consecutive 1500( WR either.
1300? Hahahaha

**** No.

He was their Right Guard, a much easier position to play than Left Guard is.
I stand corrected. I wouldn't sign him to plat LT though regardless. And I'm not crazy about him at RT either.

My hopes for our signings... we have something like 110M to throw around... we will need the other 15 for draft picks, emergency fund and practice squad.

Ronnie Stanley 21M/year - OT
Kevin Zeitler - 6.5M/year - G
Cam Robinson 19M/year - OT
(Other OL help we need to draft as we need our own home grown options)

Mike Williams 8M/year WR (I think he will bounce back well this year and make a good #2 option on cheap money...he will now be over a year removed from his injury and back to being around a 800-1000 yard guy i think) Sadly i think this may be the best they get as there aren't a lot of great WR options and few want to come here and i think Godwin/Diggs/Cooper don't want to be here and will either sign with their own team or else where.. so i think we will need to hope to draft our #1 Also i see this contract going up a lot in year 2 and 3 incase he shows he is healthy... it may be worth it if he is.

De'Andre Hopkins 14M/year WR (I know this is a premium on an older player who is on the decline... but he is an absolutely great player (or was) who will be healthy). While he won't be the guy he was... even 70% of him is still a very solid 800 yard guy and a very good #3. Plus while we need to pay a premium for him this is a one year contract for him to hopefully get his last one after... he will be motivated.

Now we still lack a true #1 WR. We will have to try to draft one.

that is 70M of offensive spending.

Carlton Davis - 15M/year - CB
Osa Odighizuwa 21.5M/year - DI

Add in a few odds and ends and call it a day.

Then in the Draft we get a top WR... Some some DL help and then go from there.

One advantage of Aiyuk is the next two years, he is only making $1.2 million base per season and $750 million a game roster bonus ($12.75 million a year max in roster bonuses).

He isn't my first choice, but he isn't a horrible option since the 49ers are eating his $23 million signing bonus.
That's actually a disadvantage for the Pats. Means his trade compensation (draft pick) is higher since the 49ers assume much of the cap cost.

A preferable deal is one where we take advantage of our ample cap space, eat the brunt of the deal, and thus pay a much lower draft pick.

So as it stands Aiyuk is not a good idea for the Pats.

Edit: Aiyuk is probably off the block now with the Samuel trade

Didn't Robinson get smashed towards the end of last year?
Hopkins for 20+?

They're gonna pay Purdy 50m big ones a year, someone has to go.

If Shanahan truly believes in him and his scheme more than the average fan then then he probably thinks he can draft a couple of WRs and his scheme will still move the football then he can pay money for OL and defense.

True but they knew this last year as well before they did the monster deal with aiyuk

I like where you're going with your choices. However, Zeitler is a no-go (too old). And I'd rather add Milton Williams DT and Josh Sweat EDGE.

Agreed. Aiyuk had his chance. I wouldn't touch him with a proverbial 10 foot pole now.

They bluffed, failed, and got screwed.
Glad it was them.

They look ridiculous imo. If they are trading him highly doubt they get the 2nd rounder they easily would have got last year with him coming off an acl. Good chance he wont be himself this year

He's a good WR, but not a 1500 kind've guy IMO.
Isn't 30M supposed to be THAT kinda guy, someone you know can mash ****, pretty much every week wreck defences.
Even THEN it's pathetic, but you swallow it..

I like it with some slight modification

DJ reed instead of Davis
Odiguzha
Josh sweat
Milton Williams

Ronnie Stanley gets tagged, so I believe we have no shot at him.
so get cam Robinson with an out after a year if he stinks. But he might end up getting overpaid . Chances for us to sign him less than 20%.
Cooper kupp or jakobi Meyers
Hufanga for safety . He had down year and could be cheap

Trade godchaux and Bourne .

Zeitler will be good this year. He is a 1-2 year band aid. I know we may need to pay some dead money for him at the end, but we need the help now and he is arguably the best guard we can reasonable get right now. We pick up him, then draft a guy this year and maybe next year too to be his successor. That is the hope anyway. And guards have been known to play well going into their mid 30s.

The Herald has a primer on Pats' free agency wishlist:

Ravens left tackle Ronnie Stanley, Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams, 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward and Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin are among the Patriots’ top targets, according to sources; though members of the organization are doubtful Godwin will leave Tampa Bay.

The Patriots planned to pursue Cincinnati’s Tee Higgins until it was reported last week the Bengals are expected to retain him via the franchise tag for a second straight year. League sources universally do not see Higgins as being available right now. But if the Bengals pivot at the last minute, one agent offered at the combine: “Everyone in the league knows (the Patriots) want Tee.”
and
Vrabel has mandated the front office treat toughness, play demeanor and football character as non-negotiables when targeting players, so he can rapidly re-establish a winning culture. These traits are all common to some mid-level free agents the Patriots plan to pursue, including a couple veteran defenders sources believe will out-perform their markets based on the Patriots’ interest.

If the Patriots whiff on their top targets — a group that consists of mid-level veterans and top-of-the-market talents — they will pivot to Plans B, C and, if necessary D, at select positions.

One such example is left tackle. The Patriots would be comfortable signing any of Stanley, Dan Moore (Pittsburgh) or Cam Robinson (Minnesota), per sources, who added Rams left tackle Alaric Jackson was part of that group until Friday when Los Angeles signed him to an extension.

Defensively, rumor has it the Patriots covet Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood, who fits the new prototype Vrabel is seeking at that position. The 6-foot-2, 216-pounder hits harder than his listed frame would suggest, the exact type of physical, violent player Vrabel wants. The Patriots are working to infuse more speed in their defensive front, which will feature smaller, faster players under Vrabel and new defensive coordinator Terrell Williams compared to most of their defenses of the past two decades.

You trying to make up for last year when the Pats didn't sign ANY player over 30 by signing 4 of them? SERIOUSLY?

Stanley is the ONLY 30+ player you listed that the Pats should look at. The others aren't worth 15M (combined) , let alone the nearly 30M you're suggesting the Pats throw into the toilet.

NO to Williams, Zeitler, and Hopkins. The Pats need PLAYERS. Not hasbeens.

As for Odighizuwa.. 21.5M for HIM? Are you his agent or something? You want to throw over 20M at a guy who has never broken double digit sacks and is an undersized interior rusher? OH. And he's horrible against the run. I'd much rather Milton Williams from the Eagles. Williams gives the same production on about 80% of the passing snaps that Odighizuwa took .
