Jason LaCanfora: Pats really want Higgins "He's going to New England"

I think he’s a fantastic player, and if healthy is easily a 1000 yard guy anywhere.

I wouldn’t hate seeing him on this team but is putting that much money towards a WR the best way to continue rebuilding?

It’s not fun or sexy but both sides of the lines need to be addressed. I’d throw some money at WRs to at least help the maturation of your young QB

But the problem is that Higgins will be kept from the true open market. Teams won’t just be offering him their best offer straight-up, the fact that they have to pay the Bengals to acquire his rights will factor into what they’re willing to offer. It will hurt his value. Not every team will be willing or able to part with the draft capital the Bengals ask for, reducing the available suitors.
The Bengals will be able to extend Tee, Hendrickson and Chase if they want but it will hurt the rest of the team. I am sure they don't want to do that and are trying to get something for Tee, but other teams should know this and will low ball them I imagine. I hope that we are not in on that.

I’d flip a 5th, or wait until after the draft and then offer a 2026 4th. Otherwise just wait and force their hand.

Achilles heel even
Speaking of achilles he had a brother Bothadees and he was held by the groin and dipped in the river sticks to be invincible in battle. Like achilles though he was vulnerable in a spot, so while everyone has heard of achilles heel noone has heard of Bothadees nuts

You are correct that a lot of teams will consider the need to trade for him in the offer. But it also gives the Bengals a lower offer for them to come in against and look better. If you are Higgins, there's gotta be a part of you that thinks "if they really want me, do what it takes to get me".

This move by the Bengals tells they don't trust their Drafting powers in finding another WR like Tee. And we thought we had problems with Drafting WR's.
I’d really love to have their WR drafting problems.

Looks like Higgins is getting tagged.

Pretty sure they would keep him just on principle than give him up for a 5th

With Tee Higgins possibly off the market certain guys prices just went up ie... S Diggs and A Cooper. I'm kinda cold on both. I would like us to go after D Slaton or Dyami Brown...the latter had a great playoffs for the Commanders very young too. We can Beef up the OL now getting a LT and RT in FA.

Vrabel is very familiar with that Tennessee WR below NWI he could be a play with Deebo.

I don't think the Bengals will want to tag him and pay him that number. They also have Jamar Chase coming up as well. This is where he could possibly fight the tag.

Also, this was debated back in 2018 when the question was asked why Bill didn't tag and trade Trey Flowers? The answer was once you tag a player, that money is immediately taken off the cap and they didn't exactly have a ton of money to play with.

Also, I mixed up Aiyuk and he wasn't tagged.

If you have the cap room, that isn't the issue. The Bengals have $46 million in cap. So they have enough room to tag and trade or tag and try to get a new deal with him if they want. I don't think they want to go into the season without a deal because he will definitely be gone in 2026 and they cannot tag him because they would have to make him the highest paid player in the NFL based on the 2026 salaries.

Again, if they cannot get a long term deal done in the next few weeks or months, there is next to zero chance that Higgins will be there in 2026. Then the most they can get in compensation for him is a 2027 third.

If they tag and trade him, they are likely to get a second rounder or more for him. I don't know if he could get a first based on what was reportedly offered for Aiyuk. But a 2025 second, especially the Patriots' second, is far better than a third in 2027.

As for Higgins fighting the tag and trade, it would depend on a lot of things. Would be willing to go to the teams looking to trade for him? Would he be mad that the Bengals took away his ability to be a free agent and pick whatever team he wanted? Is there a team he would really want to go to if not the Bengals who aren't willing to give up draft compensation, but would sign him as a free agent?

Now I don't know if the Pats would even want to get into a trade situation for Higgins. Higgins without giving up a good draft pick or two or three is one thing. Having to give up draft capital is another. They may feel Higgins is worth the draft picks and salary. Maybe then they made an attempt to go after AJ Brown and over compensate the Eagles or go after DK Metcalf or another WR that might be able to be acquired in a trade situation.

a fine idea

By then, we will have signed our two WR's and can watch others with popcorn in hand.

I see the biggest obstacles with the Bengals are that they are notoriously cheap and they only guarantee the first year of their contracts which players hate. Chase is going command second-tier QB type money. So I am not so sure they are going to get any of these guys resigned this year.

Higgins needs to nothing at all, other than wait until camp to sign his tag. In any case, if CIN wants reasonable value for him, then they need his cooperation. Even after his signing the tag, they could trade him somewhere he doesn't want to be. He would simply not sign a new deal with that team. Under those circumstances, CIN wouldn't get much in trade and would be without the cap money until July.

Unless Higgins and his agent are allowed to look for a deal, there is no incentive for Higgins to sign. IMO, the tag already puts him out of the first two-week rush to sign players.

Can we Offer a Second this year and a Third next year in a Trade?? Or does it have to be a First??

His mom went on social media “selfish bastards”. You know her son isn’t happy either with the tag.
He'll get a little more than last year if Tagged again.

I proposed this one a month ago. Not a solution, but would be a very nice addition to the receiver group.
