Many teams, and even this team's front office in recent seasons, preach about "athletes". Getting fast guys, explosive guys etc. I am suspecting that Vrabel will instead emphasize guys who give effort. What good is the fastest or most athletic guy if he only gives an effort half the time? When he's not giving effort, his value is lost and he may end up being worse than a lesser athlete who gives max effort at all times. Pharms was a guy who was always giving max effort. You are spot on.
Great coaches preach the fundamentals and technique. They put players in position to succeed. They never ask them to do something they are incapable of doing in the scheme. A good coach properly assesses the player's strengths and weaknesses and deploys them accordingly.
The one thing which is undeniable is Pharms has a GREAT motor. Need to hang on to guys like that.
Conversely there were a lot of guys on this team who did not always give effort, and they certainly weren't talented enough not to. I think a lot of them will be seeking new employment this season.
