Offseason player acquisition thread

If the goal is "living with someone for a couple of years until we groom a guy" I think Stanley would be a terrible choice. It's the same thing I said about Tyron Smith last year. If you're signing a guy meant to be more of a "stop gap" than a long term solution, then you have to prioritize availability above all else. You can't be an adequate stop gap from the sideline injured. Stanley's injury history is very concerning.

A higher upside but bigger injury risk makes more sense if your team is poised to compete and you can afford to manage a guy through the season in hopes he's available for the important games in the playoffs. Like us in the Brady years. But where we are, we need a guy we can pencil in and not worry about LT being a team-crippling liability like it has been.

IMO, guys like Alaric Jackson and Dan Moore should be higher priorities for us. They aren't as good as Stanley, but I feel better about penciling them in as weekly starters and getting serviceable production. Obviously they could still get injured, but feel less likely than with Stanley. I think we have a chance to turn it around and push for the playoffs in short order, but I don't view us as truly "competing" yet and therefore I'd rather go with stability/dependability over gambling on higher upside with more availability risk.
I agree with most everything you're saying with exception of Jackson not being as good as Stanley.

Adebo is coming off a major injury (Broken Femur) that required surgery to repair. No telling if he'll be ready for the season or not.
Agree except for Greenlaw.

In my opinion, Vrabel doesn’t give a f#%$ what Wolf wants. If he wants Kupp he’ll try to get him.

You do realize that Wolf works for Vrabel now, right?

Vrabel has final say on all personnel, right?

So of course Vrabel is going to take the player he wants.

Why is this even a question when they have stated it clearly and publically?

I do realize that. It was in response to another post saying Wolf won’t sign anyone over 30. Wasn’t my question.

We know that McDaniels can run any variation of Offense sets. We've seen him run 21, 22, and 31. If they stick with either a 21 or 22, then any WR you bring in, you're forcing Boutte or Douglas onto the bench and losing reps. Douglas is their best WR.

You don't know what you have in Polk or Baker.

Bourne is a Catalyst type WR. Good things happen when he's on the field. It's been that way since he got here. Though, rumors have it that Bourne is getting canned. I think it's a bad move, honestly.

Maye showed that he is very comfortable running with 2TEs regularly. I think that's the direction the Pats should continue with. Bringing Hooper back while continuing to develop Bell would be a good thing.

I don't see anyone in FA is a "hands-down" upgrade over Hooper in Free Agency. Not even Juwan Johnson.

I could care less about "improving" the WR room until the O-LINE and D-Line are improved.
Agreed. The OL is the trenches and what I expect us to do is build up the trenches OL & DL. Hooper is absolutely a guy should be resigning. On the WRs I know there has been alot mentioned on tee but we still have to try to meet what he wants. Of course I'd love to have him. But I'm thinking traded for a guy DK, kupp, Olave is more realistic. With McDaniels the 3rd down back and slot WR can be revived. I see big things for Gibson and pop under McDaniels. Add in kupp and this offense can soar. We were a top 10 offense with no #1 WR with Mac Jones in 2021.

Or even making the team.
Agreed. I view it as we can solidify the OL and add at the skill positions. Both have to be done. In all fairness I don't think our current group is "terrible " they just aren't game changers. With some elite coaching back in Foxboro I expect all the players who make the roster to be vastly improved.

The Dallas Mavericks just traded Luka Doncic for an aging/half crippled Anthony Davis. Maybe the Dallas Cowboys will trade Micah Parsons to us for Tavai.
That's not a fair trade we'd be getting hosed Giving up Tavai . Yeah that trade was IR for IR.. Davis has been on IR since he was drafted..

Free agency wishlist:

OT-Alaric Jackson Rams

OT -Walker Little Jags

DT Osu Odighizuwa Dallas

LB Zach Baun Philly

FS Jevon Holland Miami
I like it! Holland is interesting.. we just reupped Dugger and peppers.. my personal opinion is marpu is the guy at FS.. DT absolutely! LT absolutely.. Robinson got better on the right side he will have a chance to take the next step under real coaching.. baun absolutely.. will Philly resign him??

Holland would be icing on the cake. Jackson, Odighizuwa, Little, and Baun would be my targets the second negotiations can start. I’m hoping that Vrabel is the one reaching out to each of their agents and the players, as I think he’s got the most cache with them, and they would recognize how serious the Patriots are about signing them and building a contender. Then let Wolf, Cowden, and Groh make the deals. With 135 million to spend they can definitely get these deals, and a few more done.

If they could get these deals done it would free them up for the draft. There they could go a number of different ways. BPA for any of the top 3 player ( Hunter, Graham, or Carter), or drop down, take Warren, then trade back into the first for a guy like Luther Burden. They will have all sorts of options, but will be dealing from a position of strength instead of desperation.

As much as many here hated it people are going to end up being happy Wolf stayed out of last year’s free agent market, and gave them 135 million plus to go after free agents this year, with next to nothing needing to be done with their own free agents. And if I’m not mistaken that number is going to go up when the league announces the 25’ cap number.

Good stuff! Well I'm sure Vrabel, Cowden and Wolf will be the ones speaking with the players and agents. I would absolutely love to have a top tier tackle.. even Dan Moore at LT is an upgrade over Lowe. Addressing the trenches on offense and defense is what this offseason Will be about. Teams that win in the trenches typically go deep into the playoffs. If Carter is still there at 4 wich I believe he will be. Take him! We have the later rounds to add WR, LT primarily. We need starters! Guys in FA that will start from week 1. Definitely we need depth guys as well. Out depth was so piss poor on defense last year.

If they can fill starter spots they bolster depth automatically. Ideally I would like to see them fill at least 6 starter spots between free agency and the draft, with real quality players. If they can get more great, but 6 would be a strong offseason.

I'd say OT, WR, LB, DE,CB DT are 6 positions where we could see starters at. Chase young is under the radar and will be a FA. Absolutely sign him at DE. Still young and is a force off the edge and in the run game.. imagine a defense with Carter, young, Barmore, Bentley, no one is running on us 17 times like the Jags game.

Unfortunately after Higgins there is NOTHING at WR in free agency. They will have to rely on the draft to get stronger there. I have been more focused on DT than Edge/End, but I will go give them a look as well. CB is really deep in this Draft so I expect them to address it there.

Yeah DT definitely.. McNeil in Detroit will be a FA.. a guy who clogs up the middle at DT.. can also find a guy or 2 in the later rounds 4,5. What we need is edge guys.. pressuring the QB is paramount.
Any QB that sees relentless pressure has a hard time completing passes. These offenses like Buffalo play on all 4 downs. At WR gonna have to seek a trade.. DK, kupp, Olave.
