Vrabel's Staff Discussion Thread (Discuss related news here)

So I just listened to Bedard during my walk and he's concerned about Marrone and others on the offense side in that they seem to be Vrabel's guys and not McDaniels'. I would think McDaniels would have insisted on staffing decisions before taking the OC position. Was he that desperate that he would giv that up, or is Bedard off base.
Bedard manufactures fictional storylines all the time. He takes great delight in presenting as a contrarian and he has ample company in his efforts as a regular on the Vulgar and Spazz radio talk show. A good rule of thumb to go by in listening to him is to bet on the opposite of any stance he takes on anything.

I find it irritating when people would rather ***** than solve a problem. So, feel free to use this space to copy and paste from the similarly titled thread or just post the news directly and discuss to your hearts content.

I'll start with this. Your are encouraged to discuss in follow on posts.

NFL world reacts to Patriots assembling all-star coaching staff
I strongly agree with regard to the Offense. We only need to hire a very good WR coach and perhaps some interns/assistants.

With regard to the Defense, I don't see it. For example, I don't see the improvement in the secondary.

IMO mapu seems to have the FS role.. providing he can stay healthy and continue to Ascend.. so your talking marpu, peppers, Dugger.. Pettus is ultimately the guy who will succeed peppers in a year or 2. As much as I liked pelligrino and Brian.. the secondary struggled opposite Gonzo all season. No knock on them.. but I entrust Vrabel to have some competent coaches come in.

Marty McPoo is NOT A FREE SAFETY.

Yep, because he was wrong about Mayo last season... Oh wait...

I believe the entire Minnesota secondary is available lol

But as far as in the draft I have been mocking the following...

Pick #69

Option A) Mukuba - Texas

Option B) Darien Porter - Iowa State

Day 3

Upton Stout - Western Kentucky

Justin Walley - Minnesota

Upton Stout would is the kind of guy you want to bring in as a Nickleback.

Jon Jones was toast this year. If he's back, it should be as a Free Safety. But I'm not sure he has a good enough command of the defense to call adjustments.

Marcus Jones can't stay healthy. I love the kid, but 3 years and 3 trips to the IR just doesn't cut it.

"Ok to post discussion thread"? What did I miss?

You missed mods wielding the big hammer in the pinned Vrabel Staff thread, making that one only announcements with no discussion allowed or the hammer will come down on you.

So there’s really no need for that thread because everything there also gets immediately reposted here so we can discuss it.

You’re not really missing anything by not following that thread, except a discussion about color blindness and what text color should be used for what positions in a chart of coaching positions that somehow misses being hammered.

That chart is actually pretty good, but it would be better if it were over here where we could discuss it…

I think it’s legitimate question to ask. McDaniels is going to work with all new assistants, not having worked together there is an open question of how well will they work together.
I’m sure Josh was in on the hire discussions but also doubtful if it was him alone that these would be the assistants.
Josh is going to incorporate WCO into his system, will be interesting to see how these coaches under him mesh with him.
There was a team a few years ago hired an all star cast of coaches and they bombed due to too many alphas in the room, so you never know. Vrabel is the clear Alpha here and expect he’ll keep things in line.

Upton is described as violent which is exactly what Terrell Williams described his defensive philosophy.

As an added bonus he has his own clothing line lol

I guess word is out because it's all sold-out!

So Mapu at 230 / 6'-3" is too small for LB but Greenlaw at 230 / 6'-0" isn't. Ok.
Your right, what was I thinking.. sign Greenlaw to play FS, put marpu at LB.. Great idea , sensational post!

Mapu is a big nickel guy/Patrick Chung. He can cover TEs and RBs. Decent in the run. His #s in coverage are not bad at all.

Lets see how he does with good coaching now. I really like this kid.

Yeah, predicting that correctly took some genuine clairvoyance. Counting the number of people who were wrong about Mayo would require being able to count from 1 to 3. C'mon, you've gotta do better than that.

Glad to see he found another job. The DL was never really a problem when he coached it, but he was obviously way over his head as DC and had zero help.

I'm hoping the defensive coaching staff/secondary all work together to be stronger than the hires as individuals. I do expect the secondary to take a step back, but luckily Gonzalez is truly a legit #1 which goes pretty far. Seems the Titans were very bend/don't break types, decent with takeaways, stronger in the redzone. I wonder if they'll replicate that scheme or build on what has worked so well here.

Im expecting the defense as a whole to take a step back or maintain the suckage of last year. New system, wrong personnel, lack of talent. A lot of work needs to be done and with the work needed on offense, I just dont see how you get all that done in one offseason.

$120m in cap space can get you a couple of studs in the front 7 and potentially a CB2. Combined with the draft and existing talent that could be ok under a new scheme (rest of the secondary, hopefully White) and I could see them getting back to the middle of the pack this season in points allowed.

With that much money, the Pats should be able to address DT, LB, CB, FS, and OT while paying a premium as a non-preferred destination and still have PLENTY left over and not back-loading contracts.

Hey man. I would love that. Top 10-20 defense. Ill take it.
