Vrabel's Staff Discussion Thread (Discuss related news here)

Could be that Vrabel wants him to learn under McDaniels so that there is continuity going forward. *shrug*
I think that's it. Browns QBs in 23 were good. Zappe sucks.

Played WR in college at Assumption. Spent a lot of time with Chad OShea.

At the end of the day Josh is the QB coach. Grant is his errand boy.

My daughter went to school with his grandson. Annually we do an event where Dad’s come into school for early breakfast with the kids and bring a speaker.

Dean was kind enough to step in a few years ago.

Incredibly kind, sharp as heck.

His son was on staff with Arthur Smith in Atlanta then went to Chicago so my daughter lost a buddy.

I was the only Pats fan there obviously (Atlanta area) and I got to chat him up about the dynasty years.

Favorite comment was someone else made a joke about Welker dropping a pass to ruin the perfect season and Dean got very serious and said “wouldn’t have mattered if Asante Samual makes an interception that hit him right in the hands”.

I laughed my ass off at that one. Have a signed falcons ball from him.

He shared some really neat stories about coaching Ray Lewis which I had somehow forgotten about. Basically said that TB12 and Ray were cut from similar cloth as competitors.

Good guy.
Love the story. Only thing that irked me was the jokester getting the timeline wrong with the Welker drop, that happened in SB 46 while the perfect season pursuit was SB 42. Glad Pees clowned him away.

I thought i remember recently reading that BB was pissed because while the rule was applied appropriately in the Jets game, the officials didnt quite apply it correctly in the Titans game. I dont remember the article or the specifics but someone else may
It's because the Titans had 3 penalties.

The refs told Belichick that Vrabel did not do consecutive delay of games, so he avoided the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Belichick basically thought that reasoning was totally illogical.

It was bad logic, to say the least.

I definitely like the hiring of Dews to be the RB Coach. I think that bodes well for Stevenson and Gibson.

I'm leery of the hiring of Piraino. Lots of negative things about him in regards to Hamstrings and soft tissue injuries. Anyone know if Vrabel is on good terms with Alex Guererro and TB12? Is the TB12 facility still at Patriots Place?

I like the hiring of Williams. I think we're going to see some surprises in terms of the personal on the defense. The only ones safe are Gonzalez, White, Dugger, and Barmore (provided he's healthy). I don't expect Jon Jones back unless it's to be a Free Safety. He was toast last year.

I stated before that I hate them bring back McDaniels. I think that he's too predictable in his play-calling. As I stated, the only one more predictable than McDaniels was AVP. And I didn't think that was possible.

Vrabel supposedly worked with Ashton Grant last year in Cleveland. Grant supposedly worked with the QBs there. That may or may not be a good thing considering how Zappe and Thompson-Robinson performed for Cleveland.

It looks like John Streicher is going to be to Vrabel what Berj Najarian was to Belichick. This should bode well for Vrabel.

It will be interesting to see what position Zak Kuhr will hold.

Still no news on Brian Belichick and Mike Pellegrino, I'm hoping that they stay and can work with Williams. They are excellent position coaches.

It will be interesting to see if Vrabel keeps Slater and Hightower around.
I’d say judging a 29 year old QB coach off of the development of Zappe and that Thompson fella is cruel and unusual punishment.

Hahaha. What’s funny I edited for length and left out that heckler’s full comment was “offense let you down on the welker drop on that perfect season” and Dean said “that was a different superbowl and we’d have won if Asante Samuel catches the int that hit his hands”.

McDaniels will be working with the QB’s of course but much more with Maye. I think this hire is to bring someone in to help with Milton and any other QB’s we may have. McDaniels might not have the time for all QB’s. BB’s days of limited staffs are over.

When Drew Petzing took the Cardinals OC role a year ago, he reportedly tried to take Grant with him. When multiple coaches leaving Cleveland try to recruit a coach to come with them, you know the guy must be pretty talented….

Just looking at Vrabel and his staff at this point vs. Mayo et al last year, the biggest thing that jumps out to me is the huge disparity in experience.
That alone is a major improvement.

I'm not sure that this necessarily sends that signal. Bill O'Brien was the QB coach under McDaniels. This really isn't out of keeping with the past. Josh Boyer took over as QB coach in McD's second stint.

Not sure about this hiring, I thought McDaniels would be OC AND QB coach. I want Maye attached to McDaniel’s hip.

I just assumed McDaniels would be the OC AND QBs coach. You know what happens when you assume. Maybe Grant has some interesting ideas that Vrabel liked.

I posted the video earlier - Titans delay of game, then deliberate false start, and then everyone was waiting to see if they would do it again (unclear if that would have produced an unsportsmanlike penalty), but then the Patriots (Bethel) jumped early. Those three penalties combined took it below 5 minutes.

The video is worth watching if only for the expressions on Vrabel's and Bill's faces:

When you hire a rookie HC, especially one with no coordinator experience, then how do you allow the hiring of a rookie DC? Mayo and Covington had been around for a while, but both Bill & Steve Belichick were leaving so who was going to perform defensive game planning? And on offense, was AVP the guy to re-shape the offensive personnel through FA and the draft?

Just too many foreseeable problems starting out last year.
