and now the coaches under Josh
passing game coordinator
running game coordinator
QB coach
assistant QB coach
WR receiver coach
assistant WR coach
running back coach
tight ends coach
==========
I hope that we keep one or more of the present group of AVP, McCartney and McAdoo.
I am assuming Josh will also be the QB Coach as he has tended to be for most years he spent as OC.

They’ve never really had pass game/run game coordinators, I’m not sure if that changes now - but it could. It’s an easy way to add extra talent to your staff via a “promotion”.

I could see someone like McCartney staying over in an Assistant QB Coach role for continuity’s sake.

OL Coach, WR Coach, RB Coach, TE Coach are unknowns.

I am curious if Cole Popovich is an option to come coach OL - currently Asst OL Coach in Houston, formerly the same in NE after leaving over the “vaccine mandate” rules in 2020 (IIRC).

Mick Lombardi was previously WR Coach in NE under McDaniels in his previous stint. Left with McDaniels to be his OC in Vegas. I’m not sure if he’s really that good.

Nick Caley was the previous TE Coach, so need new blood there. Ivan Fears was RBs, retired. A couple guys from McDaniels’ staff in LV could be options - Bo Hardegree, Edgar Bennett, Kennedy Polamalu.

Let's look at the Bright side Josh McDaniels will Never and I say Never get another HC job in the NFL. So he'll be here for a very very long time. Maye's OC for life...Did I say I love this??

See the forest …this is shaping up perfectly for this team. Fundamentals wins you championships. The fancy stuff gets you highlights.
Very excited. This team will have their heads on straight. They will be able to look to their coaches with questions and get detailed answers. I don’t think there will be lots of big “splash plays” right away but they will be playing steady and will be able to “take advantage of bad football” as Vrabel said. Their schedule is pretty weak so there will be time to get acclimated. Best part is that this seems like a core group of coaches who largely will be around for the long haul. If it works we are back in business for a while.

Wasn't who I wanted but what do I know.

I can trust coach our HC went with who he really wanted unlike last offseason's laughable attempt at putting a staff together. I'll gladly know my place. Could be talked into getting pretty pumped once we get details of how he was modernizing his offense in college this past season.

I agree, MacDaniels is a good OC, I just didn’t want EP back. Maybe he will make history and declare he’s a West Coast convert.

Again Ivan? The EP as an outdated offense whine is getting thin to me at least. Most of the so-called new wave of the modern RPO and motion offenses come right out of the 1920's-40's single wing concepts. Often what was considered "old fashioned" comes back in style

Josh is a PROVEN OC who failed miserably as a HC. Being a great HC has little to do with being a great X's and O's guy. It certainly doesn't hurt. Just look at Dan Campbell. He's been a great HC in Detroit because of the culture he's built, in Detroit, not for his game plans. Credit him for hiring Glenn and Johnson and it will be interesting to see how he does without them.

But here's the thing. It seems ironic that Campbell also started his first season with a 3-win season, but he was allowed to build his program, and they improved to 9-8 in 22, and followed up with 2 division titles and a NFCG over the last 2 season as the Lions have been one of the top teams in the NFC. You never know that a guy who was considered a clown in his first year a HC actually CAN turn it around if given a chance, but that is just rambling, let's get back to why Josh is as good a choice that's out there.

The second major complaint that irritates me in this thread is the whine that It wasn't Josh to give us our great offenses of the 2000's and 2010's it was only because of Tom Brady. You know who would be the first to tell you that line of thinking is total BS? Tom Brady. That's who. The Pat's have had only 1 elite WR during the 20 yr. Dynasty, and that was the 2 years we had with Randy. The only other so called elite receiver we had during that time was Gronk, a TE. Yet over the 15 odd years that Josh was the OC or QB coach, the Pats were a top 10 offense a least 10 times and probably closer to a dozen.

I"m aware it doesn't hurt when you QB is the GOAT, but Josh was right there as Brady made the transition from being a "game manager" to the All pro and superstar he became. People keep on forgetting that in no other team sport does a player rely on so many others to have individual success even if it's at the most important position on the offense. So, the Brady acolytes have made it seem like he was the SOLE reason for the success of the Pats over the first 2 decades of the 2000's. But I digress. Bottom line: there is a strong possibility that for at least the next 5 years that Maye will have an experienced and proven voice in his ear, BTW- I wouldn't hate it if they brought back AVP as QB coach because he clearly did a great job with both Maye and Milton's early development, and it would add to the continuity in Maye's development. But I'm not going to go nuts if he isn't brought back

thanks for listening, Ivan

After trading away a far more talented 4500 yard passer in his prime and destroying the locker room. That was Mcdaniel’s MO. Replaced talent with far inferior talent and destroyed the locker room.
Would not want him as a HC ever but at least he knows how to be a competent OC

You are aware that from 2018 to 2021 seasons Josh McDaniels was paid the same as most Head Coaches were over those years to stop him from taking the Indy HC job.

And, while this has never been reported, the contract McDaniels received from the Raiders was inordinately lucrative for a hiring with no other teams competing for his services - 6 years $10 million a year which put him in the top ten of HC salaries. Of course, you could chalk that up to Mark Davis being an idiot and/or the Patriots were bidding to keep him from leaving once more.

Stop letting Smelger and Spaz operate your brain on their behalf. You’re smarter than they are and you’re not being paid oodles to stir up sh-t.

So not having to pay McDaniels isn't enticing to the Krafts?

That really doesn't matter because the real point here is I thought we were burning it down and moving on from the BB tree.

McDaniels is more than qualified for the job and it's not like I'm upset by this. But you know what? I thought the same thing about bringing back Bill O'Brien.

Supposedly.

Very predictable.

On the one hand, I know Josh McDaniels really cooked when he had the GOAT at QB, TB12.

On the other hand his offense is notoriously difficult to pick up for wide receivers and requires a cerebral QB to handle the multiple option reads.

Will Josh McDaniels be able to develop Maye to his top potential in this system or will this be a roadblock for his rise?

I'm really not sure this is the best move, but in our guts we all knew this had a high likelihood of happening.

Also let's see how our Wide receivers handle this system. Was it just our ****ty drafting that doomed our wideouts for 20 years or was the system he runs just too hard to learn?

I do see an advantage there, that there is a zero percent chance he gets hired as a head coach elsewhere ever again.
You guys are too hung up on this, which is just not true

If a guy does well, the other teams, either in college or in the NFL take notice and all his sins are forgiven.

It's like this in literally every sport

The coaches aren't idiots. They aren't going to just lay the whole Brady playbook on them.

It will be simplified and drip fed to them. As they get the hang of it they will add to it over time.

We aren't dealing with the same incompetent staff as last year.

Why would anyone care about that? Josh will be babysat by Vrabel. McDaniels was awful when he was not babysat, but that is irrelevant to the present situation because he will be babysat by Vrabel. Why did you post that concern?

Josh is a seasoned coach who has a load of experience and knowledge.. suspect he will operate somewhat differently due to Drake's youth/experience. Also suspect he will be around for a while as he has a lot of prove before he gets more HC experience, if he gets another HC opportunity.
The Pats need great coaching consistency and do not need to replicate what has happened to the NY Jets..
Good solid move by the Patriots..

McDaniels was my choice all along. He knows how to tailor an offense according to the talent available. Get Moss and Welker, they became the highest scoring offense ever. Have an aging QB (but still great), and good running backs like in 2018, they ran the hell out of the ball. He’s very adaptable. And he’s great at developing QBs.

I’ll never forget in SB 53, he literally drew up some plays in the touchdown drive on the sidelines, during the game, to help win the game.

Hopefully they bring in some good offensive talent, bring in a good OLine coach, and a good receivers coach. I would love if they brought in Brian Hartline from Ohio State as WR’s coach. He is great at developing WRs.

This is a good thing for Drake Maye. He'll have a proven OC on the same page as the HC who needs a trusted play caller and teacher. Maye is a smart kid and will adjust to different terminology and learn a lot from McDaniels who was about as good an in-game situational play caller as anybody out there. I liked AVP but it was clear he was learning on the job last year. JM has no such issue.

We've seen JM offenses succeed with various receiving corps with a variety of skill sets. There will be new personnel to get the most out of in 2025, and we've seen Josh call plays that take advantage of Patriots strengths and opponent weaknesses.

The other thing here is that you can be sure neither Vrabel nor McDaniels came to the Patriots at below thair market value. The Krafts are spending money which bodes well for free agents and trades this off-season.

McD is brilliant at film study, a solid play designer, a good QB coach, and a maddening play caller. His playcalling is streaky - often pedestrian, sometimes brilliant, sometimes deer in the headlights. I was hoping for someone else but he'll be an adequate placeholder.

This is a solid hire. Really nothing to complain about and a lot to like. We know exactly what we are getting and that is overall competence.

Any other hire would seem to come with lots of questions. High floor and high ceiling hire.

Ken. I’m happy to see you back posting and I hope you are doing well. But just to clear a few things up. I have said numerous times that MacDaniels is a good OC, I just don’t like the EP offense, and I don’t like them switching offenses on Maye. I also never said anything about Brady being the only reason it worked, or anything about Vrabel not being a good X’s and O’s guy, so I think your complaints must be about other posts in this thread.

As I said yesterday when the deal was done I don’t like the decision to go back to the EP offense, but I trust that Vrabel knows what he’s doing, so I’ll just accept it.
