Mason Graham vs Abdul Carter

I go either way on Carter v Graham. I am a little concerned that Carter is a little undersized and relies on his speed. Graham strikes me as a high floor, high ceiling prospect. Carter's ceiling might be higher but I'm concerned about how high his floor is. We need to absolutely nail this pick and Graham feels safer, if a little less exciting.

Size is the #1 concern I have about Carter. I would be just as concerned about him getting steamrolled all the time by much bigger guys as I am about Campbell and Banks having allegedly substandard arm length, or about Tet McMillen not being able to separate well enough.

My concern about Graham is his potential impact as a DT, if that is in fact the position he would play for the Pats. However there are many guys who have been game wreckers from that position over the years; Chris Jones and Aaron Donald being two recent cases.

I guess if it were me I’d go with Graham over Carter, but go with Campbell if the arm length thing is not a fatal flaw (I imagine 33” is the minimum for most teams, the Pats may have a minimum that is longer, I can accept that even though he’s my binky, I don’t want him unless his coaches believe he can be a star a LT for them, otherwise I want the guy that will keep the opponents up at night worrying).

There is no can’t miss guy in this draft, including Hunter all of the currently projected top prospects have flaws. It is what it is, too bad for us since the Pats would be in a great spot to leverage #4 if the class were better at the top end.

I agree in general, but Hunter is a can’t miss guy. You can’t be that great an all around football player and not succeed. Unless you are a crackhead, or go to the Jets. So I guess you are right, he could miss.

I lean Graham because it would shore up the interior and give them 2 interior DL who can get after the QB, and if Barmore returns healthy and ready to play a DL with White, Barmore, and Graham on it would give them the best young DL in football.
I agree totally Ivan: we can always find a DE's even a situational one. But those Good Disruptive DT's are hard to find after the First Round: I am all in on Mason Graham.

So I guess you want the Patriots not to be gauged by the run like last season. Graham has an elite motor who is going to be a leader. Tough as nails. Very competitive. Just dynamite. A difference maker at DT.

I struggle to order the top 3 but I think I will end up with Graham over Carter for two reasons:

1. The reasons you state like leadership, competitiveness etc.
2. I think Graham can be an impact player on all 3 downs but see Carter as a potential liability in the run game

These two guys are the leading candidates if the team stays at 4. Flip a coin.

Perhaps more interesting will be our pick near the top of the second round.

Wyatt Milum vs. Abdul Carter. Wyatt Milum with a second round pick? Works for me.

I love Milum. Don't know how the Pats would feel about his lack of length but I would 100% draft him at 38 even if it's just to play LG.

Watching the playoffs. These teams are struggling to stop the run. If I had to guess, I think Vrabel will go Graham.

Buy an offense. $$$
Higgins
Stanley
Bechton
Trade for WR. DK or Pickens(Atlanta 3)

Draft defense
1. Graham - DT
2. Edge
3 K. Winston - FS - PSU

I like your formula and have been thinking along similar lines although I wouldn't mind using the draft to rebuild the OL thinking more about the next 4-5 years than just next season although I'm fully on the sign Stanley bandwagon.

Get Carter, a foundational edge rusher

My early pick would be Carter. When drafting in the top five, teams should be drafting for talent over need. I know fans (and maybe even Maye) will be screaming for offensive line or wide receiver help, but there isn’t a Malik Nabers or Joe Alt in this draft class. New England should be targeting high-level talent, not a specific position. And the Patriots will likely address those offensive positions in free agency anyway. With his explosive athleticism, Carter would give the Patriots an upgrade at a key position.
This draft class is lacking in true blue-chip talent at the top. But Carter is one of the few with the talent and traits to become a perennial Pro Bowler and a cornerstone franchise player. That is also why he might be gone in the first three picks. But New England will certainly hope he makes it to the fourth pick, either to draft him or entice another team to move up and grab him. Dane Brugler

So here's a question for you:

1. Abdul Carter + Walter Nolen/Deone Walker/Derrick Harmon (one of)
2. Mason Graham + Princely Umanmielen

Which is your preferred draft haul?

We really have to go BPA. We need help everywhere. If there’s somebody they like, just pick him. Edge, T, WR, CB, LB or S. We need all of em.

Would you include TE, RB and interior O/Line on that list?

Outside of Top 2 picks. I would. Unless Tyler Wallen falls to 38. That ain’t happening. I’d consider Skattebo at 3b or 4. I don’t want to use early picks on interior OL. Sign Bechton if ya need a G. Let Andrews/Strange play out.
