The Bill megathread (HC at UNC, girlfriend, etc.)

Good to hear.

The mouth of Sauron has spoken.

Yeah he’s not bailing on UNC.

I didn't fall for anything. Just noted a news story about UNC/Bill. Sure it's "normal process" (although there is nothing "normal" about a 6 time Super Bowl winning Head Coach joining a college program), but a term sheet is not a legal contract, and there is debate about what his buyout would be if he decided to leave. I can't imagine that he would leave UNC this year, but many here thought there was NO way Kraft would fire Mayo after one year.
People think wrong things. Gotcha.

That doesn’t change that the article was click bait tonight was some kind of big issue that he hadn’t signed a contract, and the truth is it’s the normal way these things happen

Good to hear.

Hear from Michael Lombarbi

BB has not said this.

The bigger point is that it’s odd Lombardi has become Belichick’s sole mouthpiece on these matters in recent days.

As former Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty said on Tuesday’s PFT Live, Belichick harped to his players about the importance of always speaking for themselves, and of never letting anyone else speak for them. Why would Belichick deviate from that approach now, if it was “completly fabracated” that his lingering interest in returning to the NFL before his $10 million buyout drops to $1 million, coupled with his delay in fully and completely hiring his coaching staff, would make others skittish about his plans?

I'm curious as to why the buyout goes from 10 down to 1 mil CLOSER to the season starting.... I would think it would be the other way around...unless I missed something...

Ironic this story comes out one day after McCarthy is wacked in DAL.

BB is just a famous / excellent example of the good and bad in us all. As I age, I’ve just noticed that some people I don’t like are blessed with truly worthy qualities, while some I’ve respected and cared for are more flawed than I thought.

BB is a brilliant coach and tactician. He’s driven, hard-working and successful. He is able to analyse a multitude of factors and get to the fundamental strategies that he feels will allow him to win football games. His memory and knowledge are unmatched. But, he’s also flawed. While there has always been talk of BB being a good listener to his advisors, it does seem that he has difficulty trusting anyone outside a small group. He doesn’t adapt to some aspects as well as he adapts mid game to an opponent. He might be looking to date your daughter…

It’s difficult to see where this is going for him. I hope he finds success wherever he does land - unless he switches back to the pros and faces our team.

Maybe his trust was a little broken as people he once trusted tried to replace him before he was gone. Inserting unqualified people in places he once held power and writing succession clauses into contracts.

Click bait heaven. People have tied BB to Dallas, Dallas job is open so why not write a shocking article implying BB isn’t committed to NC because LIKE EVERYONE ELSE he signed a term sheet and it’s unlikely an official contract gets prepared and signed until a few months go by.

Yea he isn't going anywhere.

Yea he isn't going anywhere.
No. As we discussed before the only way he is going anywhere is if he told them up front that it was a contingency if the right job came through.

The fact that he is signing his contract within the normal timeframe for college coaches, but the normal amount of time hasn’t elapsed yet is irrelevant and the guy who wrote the article knew that.

Belichick is hurting himself by letting the rumors swirl about going back to the NFL. I think he could have one of the biggest recruiting advantages of any coach in college, as any kid serious about wanting to go pro would want to play for a HC with a direct pipeline to the league. But kids are going to pass if they think he will walk after they commit to his program. He should put all the rumors to rest by making it clear he’s not going anywhere for the next few years.

You have a very interesting and compelling point.

I think by general rule and to not set precedent he doesn't generally talk about rumors and things out of his control. I don't think he wants his players feeling like they need to respond to everything but in this case you might be right.

Agree but he is also teaching the kids indirectly not to get caught up in the noise. Media. Social media.

I don't know how he is hurting himself. His mouthpiece, Lombardi dismissed it. He can't stop people from talking about it and if he did deny it, nobody would accept it anyway. He is doing his job.

He’s hurting himself by letting it hang out there. He should make it clear he’s not going anywhere.

Dunno if he's letting it hang out there on purpose, just some media trying to get clicks. No way no how he bolts on UNC.
