Good story on Roman Phifer, who is rumored to be on Vrabel's staff

On top of already having an offer to go back to SF; his style of defense is a bad fit with the personnel we have on the roster....if he takes a job other than SF, I would expect it to be one where the personnel is already good, just need coaching to fix it.
We need to blow up our system. We don’t have coaches who know how to duplicate the Belichick system. Without belichick it’s just a complex system that is missing the architect.
It’s not like we have players now that only fit that system, at least ones worth keeping.

I don't disagree....I just don't think Saleh would be interested in doing it here, I'm sure his sights are set on HC shot2, and the turnaround here isn't going to be fast enough to get him that shot quickly.

I see some posters that seem to want Ben Johnson.. I'd caution that the offensive fire power he has to work with in Detroit with a championship caliber team is far different than what he has in NE if he got hired. Like going from a Ferrari to a VW beetle ! I like Ben Johnson the offensive mind. However I like Vrabel the coach! Vrabel checks basically every box that an owner would want. Now in hearing he'd possibly add phifer to his staff excellent!!
Well said. At present, the Patriots do not have the talent on Offense (except for Maye) that the Lions do. Then there's the question of can he coach an entire Team, as he won't be able to dedicate 100% of his time to just the Offense.

The one thing I didn't like in his time with the Jets (except 2 games a year) was how consistently undisciplined the Defense was with taking penalties (especially personal fouls). My bro-in-law is a Jets fan and he couldn't stand him (not as much as Rodgers though).

I kind of think situation isn’t a big deal with HC candidates. Many come from decent not great teams. But I agree why wouldn’t he go back with Shanahan?

I really don't agree with giving up on something just because it's complicated. That's point so the opposition can't just easily know what you're doing.

I'm fine with switching systems if the new coach wants to do things differently but don't do it just because it's hard.

Roman is/one of my favorite ex Patriots.

How is it a bad fit when we need to replace/upgrade a majority of the positions?

Because I doubt he wants to be here long enough to actually do the rebuild

I only remember him a little, but he was part of that hardworking, lunch pail defense we had, especially early on in 2021.

I think with Vrabel not really being an offensive minded coach (though it's said he can coach any position), it's important to look at who he might bring, whether that's Josh McD or Rees for the OC position.

But I was surprised to see Phifer on a list and that he's so high up in the Broncos organization. I love seeing these old Pats stalwarts end up in different areas of football, whether coaching or front office. Whether you want to say they're part of the Bill tree or not, clearly the experience of being on the Pats shaped them to be who they are now.
I’m definitely a fan of Rees

I think you mean 2001.

Roman did everything. BB said his combination of intelligence, instincts and physical talented was among the best he ever coached

Has it really been 20 years?
It really is insane how the years have rolled by.

Great story.....in the offseason of 2001, Roman was going through a divorce and his kid was in LA. BB knew him from the Jets. Roman told BB he was sitting out the year but would consider joining west coast teams. BB offered Roman he could come to camp late and head home when he needed to during the 2001 season. Roman joined the NEP and the rest is history.

It’s effective because it’s complicated. It is steeped in game planning, opponent film study, every concept known to man, utilizing role players, covering weaknesses and experience. You can’t run that effectively without the right staff and we don’t and won’t have it.
