Boston Herald - Inside the Patriots’ 2024 season, Jerod Mayo’s firing and a franchise’s continued fall

It won’t help the Pats now for all of the losses they endured during the dynasty, but shouldn’t Detroit be compensated in some way if Ben Johnson leaves? He wasn’t a hot commodity before Detroit.
The NFL currently swings so far in favor of coach movement that they have said that any clauses preventing coaches from seeking promotions are unenforceable.

Hell, the original version of the resolution that gives draft picks to teams that lose minority candidates originally gave the bonuses to the team making the hire.

If Mayo didn’t watch film, wasn’t involved in game planning on either side of the ball, and didn’t communicate well with his coaches, what did he do with his time? I picture him in his office playing Fortnite.

(About the Cincinnati game) - “After we won, (Mayo) was the happiest guy, bouncing off the walls during the week. The happiest guy in the world,” one staffer remembered. “And after we lost, it was like someone shot his dog.”The source continued: “Meanwhile, most of us are in there watching the tape (of the Bengals game), and it’s like, ‘Oh s—.’ We were so lucky to win this game.’ I don’t know if he watched the tape before taking that victory lap. We really lucked out there and obviously the rest of the season bore that out.”
This in the stadium before the Seahawks game after the win vs Cincy. He was flying so high. There were articles about this clip that a football coach shows that you don't have to be serious all the time to win!

This was cringey at the time and is now just really embarrassing. This is what he was focused on instead of actually trying to get prepared to win games.

His players are not between the white lines so it's ok he's good here.

This is all so entirely unsurprising. It was obvious in that first press conference that he had no vision for the team. He just spoke in generic corporate language and of being nice to each other - as if that alone makes a team. It then became obvious when he kept talking about being a CEO that he had no intention of grinding and doing what was necessary to build a successful franchise. He stepped back, pushed work onto his staff and then blamed them when it went wrong. And it was obvious by training camp that his so called culture reset just meant allowing players to do whatever they wanted, and discipline went out the window. The Judon episode was the prime example.
Guarantee you Judon noticed immediately how terrible of a coach this guy is

I thought the article would have more detail that would be interesting, so I paid $1 for a full year access, I mean it was $1 so why not, just need to set a reminder to cancel next year LOL.
Cancel now. Usually with that kind of thing you’ll still have your access for the year but you won’t have to worry about forgetting. They just want to be able to show that someone is subscribing for their advertisers

I can’t see Kyed’s name without thinking of the tragic death of his two-year-old daughter from leukemia last year. It was so heartbreaking for me to read about the story and see all of the pictures of their beautiful little girl, so I can’t imagine the anguish that he and his wife went through and are probably still going through.

I know it would never happen but if the next coached wiped out the entire receiver room I wouldn't really care.

Why should we? Our "starters" - Bourne, Douglas & Booty - are mere backups on a PO team; and the rest - SloPolk & half-Baked (and earlier including Ozzy & BoneyT) are Garbage.

Right. Judon wasn’t traded because we wanted to trade him to get a pick, he was traded because he said get me TF outta here

If there was an early warning sign (besides burn all the cash), for me it was that moment in camp where Mayo walked over to Judon and tried to be one of the guys rather than the head coach and it blew up completely in his face.

Yeah, you simply need to trust that your players will learn from being put in their place. This ain't your local fortune 500 marketing department, this is a blood sport lmao.

Discipline works with people who are committed and bought in. It creates complaint and failure from people who were likely to fail any way.
Disciplinarians get replaced by nice guys because people think you can be happy go lucky and still driven. Then the nice guy fails. The cycle of management in competitive fields.

I believe I read somewhere that the NFL rewards teams with conditional draft picks for giving jobs to minorities if those minorities end up being head coaches or promoted to higher positions in different organizations.

I read it a year or two ago in regards to the 49ers taking advantage of this and get a bunch of extra picks.

It would be nice if they applied the same rule to teams that are gutted of their coaching staff due to their success. I mean they already do this when teams lose free agents.

I don't remember where I saw it on YouTube, but the media was blocked by people surrounding Tavai and his locker as he was cleaning it out. Media speculation was that the Pats didn't want him talking to anyone.

I look forward to his exit in 2025. He's the Dillon Brooks of the Patriots.

Agreed, but Mayo didn’t need to be a disciplinarian there or one of the guys. He just misread the situation entirely and you could tell that the role was too big and complicated for him. Someone else had to come out and send Judon home from camp.

This was football malpractice, as unprofessional as anyone could have imagined. What a waste of time and resources. I know it'll never happen, but as season ticket holder I feel like I'm owed a rebate.

One welcome bit of irony, though: as awful as this team and coaches were, they beat the Jete in Foxboro. That's hilarious.
