The Official Vrabel vs Ben Johnson Discussion Thread

Vrabel, Kraft can I can the Dweebs, Wolf your not talking about me though right?

So many posts, I'm going to assume they boil down to this.

Marry Vrabel, **** Johson, Kill Mayo.

I know he's not BB's coaching tree exactly, but he seems a lot like him in terms of being an overseer of the whole team, a master strategist, and supreme understander of situational football.

Where it seems a little disjointed is in picking the people to work under him (or with him in case of the GM). Like Salah is a very different schematic coach than what he's worked with in the past. If you constantly have to swap schemes because you jump from coordinator to coordinator, eventually you pick a dud. I worry about a lack of cohesion in his coaching staff year to year where they might always be swapping out new schemes.

Ben Johnson is absolutely a possible huge mistake, but I am compelled to strive for greatness, and my bet would be on a Maye/BJ combo working it out. That's really the most important piece.

I'm ok either way. Strong argument for Vrabel. Flores would be interesting, if Minnesota loses. It's really hit or hit with the two choices.

If BJ doesn't work, bring in a real Harbaugh type floating around like the Chargers did this year. If Maye is for real it would take Mayoism heroics to keep him down.

It would just be a fun off season with Ben

I wish Harbaughs grew on trees. You could make the argument that John Harbaugh is top 3? Coaches of the last 20 years. 12 winning seasons, 2 losing seasons, has an SB, has appeared in and won many playoff games, has bested BB before, fielded a team that needed a back of the book rule-bend and double pass to be miraculously beat by an SB winning Patriots team. Dunno if they just float around all that much.

Jim is 44-19 with SF, 11-6 with the Chargers. Consistent as hell. 144-52 as a college HC between San Diego, Stanford and Michigan.

Interesting hypothetical Q: if John Harbaugh was available - do you take him over Vrabel? I say yes.

This pod episode cemented my preference for Vrabel. Vrabel described, with examples, as an elite leader of men with the ability to teach almost any position on the field. Johnson is described as a very bright coach and a brilliant OC, but also as a more quiet/nerdish guy who is happiest in his office by himself with the door closed, conjuring up schemes for the upcoming game.

Agree. My coaching preference for 2024 was...

1. Harbaugh
2. Vrabel
3. Kingsbury
4. Flores
5. Mayo

Was that the most recent one with the dude from Underdog on it? That was a solid one.
