Breer and Curran already walking everything back. Must of got the “hey stop riling up the fans” message from the Krafts. Sigh.
Hate to say I told you so, but....
Tbh there were just a lot of things in Mayo's favor right now
-first year HC's rarely get let go after a single season unless they dramatically **** up. And not in a "the team isn't buttoned up" sort of way, but an off the field way where they are acting like a lunatic like Urban Meyers or lost the lockeroom.
-For whatever reason the players still have his back and really like him. Why I don't know.
-The last coach only won 4 games so anything in the ballpark isn't going to put a target on his back. It's not like we lost an 8-8 coach and went to 2 or 3 wins.
-There's a general perception across the NFL and it seems like in the front office that the team just isn't good and was always going to have a bad season and were in for a long rebuild. I know some fans here want to think someone else could win a lot more games, but most people just don't believe that. The Patriots were always expected to have as very bad season this year.
-He's a first year HC so there was always some expected growing pains and it seems like Kraft and co factored that in and were okay with the idea that this was a lost season and he could break a few eggs in his development.
-The Patriots are not an attractive location right now with this roster. If you fire him, any coach you bring on is going to have to be sold on the idea that they will come into the worst roster in league and will need to believe they will get some time to work through it. It's very hard to sell that when you just got rid of the GOAT HC who is highly respected and then gave the next guy 1 season. For a lot of HC's that's a major risk and the good prospects have options.
I'm not saying that's a great thing, but those are all pretty big reasons why it's highly unlikely he was only going to get one year even if the prospects don't look great.
