Mayo interview with Curran

While I think Mayo will improve next season, I doubt it'll be good enough for the team to become a true contender in the near future and I would prefer they dump him now and get a head coach and coordinators who are ready for the big time from day 1.

That said, it doesn't seem like ownership agrees. It seems very likely Mayo and Wolf are here next year, no matter what happens the rest of the way this year. Since that's the case, I have to hope there's some plan in place to make this coaching situation functional.

I think if they can figure out something to improve the defensive play calling/adjustments and inject a lot of free agent/draft talent at all levels of the D, that will go a long way. On O, if they get a real WR1 in free agency, a WR coach, and some better pieces on the line, they might be good enough to win some games. And if Mayo will stop saying stupid things and making questionable calls in the few choices that are actually up to him during a game, that might be good enough for playoffs next year. If that happens, won't we have to judge Mayo as a success?

It's amazing how much sports talk has deteriorated in our lifetimes.
For a major market to be saddled with the horseshit programming offered by WEEI and 98.5 is an embarrassing disgrace. There isn't one daily show on either station that offers even 5 seconds of legitimate sports analysis and commentary ever. National media observers just giggle at the crap we have here.

This isn't on Mayo. He's young. He's 36. Of course he'd be a better coach next year. That goes without saying with someone so young being a Head Coach for the first time.

The big problem is that the owner doesn't understand what is required to run a successful football team.
I'm almost 20 years older than than Mayo...he hasn't aged well.

Umm what. Is this how you stay thin by all the exercise you get jumping to conclusions. I do not see how you came to that conclusion at all. In the military I was put in charge of my first physical therapy clinic once I hit E-6, I made a lot of mistakes but learned from them and improved in my 2nd year of doing it. Point is that if you acknowledge there is room for improvement and you intend to work toward improving that doesn't mean you wrote off the 1st year even while you're doing it.
The NFL is not the US Military.

Funny enough whenever they have outside reporters like Reiss or Callahan or Perry on the morning show it's actually pretty good. But that lasts all of 20 minutes before the fart jokes resume

Just as expected: softball questions, corporate-speak answers and yuckin' it up bro-style.
What makes you think he’ll be any better next year? Is he suddenly going to learn his X’s & O’s and be able to help the defense gameplan? Is he going to have an epiphany & learn how to talk to the media without putting his foot in his mouth? Is he going to suddenly grow a spine and hold his players accountable for penalties & mental errors?

I wrote Mayo off when I saw him acting like a clown and dancing around the set of “Quick Slants” 10 years ago. He’s the same goofball now that we was then. There’s no way the players can take him seriously & to think he’s going to be able to develop the skills to lead an NFL locker room over the next few months is the highest form of wishful thinking.

You better hope so because he's going to be the HC next year.

“I will be a better coach next year”

So… he’s writing off this year already? And he is already sure he’s definitely not getting fired at the end of the season no matter what?

I feel like that’s not really the best attitude to have but oh well.

How many coaches say that and then don't have a gig the next year?

If that’s true, you can write off next year as well. As a fan base, we have an obligation to put enough pressure on ownership to make them come to thier senses.

Vrabel needs to be hired before the Jets pick him up.
The owner is who he is, not changing now.

I'm not writing anything off. There's a slim chance they'll be better next year. They should have an easy schedule (this year's hard schedule was an anomaly). They have to spend a ton of money next year so whatever high price free agents out there looking for top dollar will come here. Plus another year of Maye's development without having to pretend Cryin' Jacoby is the QB.

Covington will probably be gone. A sacrificial lamb. But Mayo won't be on the hot seat until the end of next season. Hence, the need for fans to buckle up. If you choose not to watch the rest of this season and/or next season, it's your choice.

My reason is that I don't value coaching as much as most fans. I've come to believe that talent evaluation is far more important than coaching techniques. Those have been around for a century with a few tweaks that get figured out in time.
That neverending cycle of figuring things out, adapting, and coming up with new things and tweaks that work is... kind of a big deal. It requires someone who can be ahead of the curve, not someone who's playing catchup. Hoping he becomes an innovative genius based on absolutely not a single thing he's ever done is insanity.

Insanity is AWEsome!

Reporter: "Malcolm, how'd did you know that they were going to run that play?"
"Because we were showed it prepping for the game"

Guys have said the same thing in other interviews.

If Mayo was the coach of the Panthers or Giants or Jags, he would definitely be one and done this off season. He’s admitting he wasn’t ready for the job and we’re banking on some mythical improvement. Why are we appointing people to roles they aren’t ready for and then having to point them babysitters to help out.

You will never hear of such things with a Mayo coached team. He is entirely reactive; doesn't have the depth of knowledge or intellect to be proactive.

Showed some humility there. I like the guy… be honest he probly won’t be a great coach. If he ended up turning this program around it be a great story. Jury still out

MayoNays, easily. The longer he stays, the more damage he causes to the franchise.
Wolf's draft pick mistakes have a 4 year contract. Essentially every draft mistake is a 4 year mistake. Mayo's mistakes don't rob the team of a cost effective 4 year player. Wolf should be the first to go.
