Drake Maye appreciation thread

I will fully admit to being wrong on waiting to play this guy. I still worry he could get killed behind this line, but it's much less a worry now that we can see plainly that he has elite processing speed combined with cat-like quickness.

I tell everyone I talk to about football that, yes, we may suck right now, but Maye gives me that hopeful feeling I had when we got Bledsoe...maybe we're leaving the Dark Ages...just maybe...

Wonder if him performing so well puts more pressure on the team. There will be playoff expectations sooner than anticipated.

We all know the special traits this kid is showing
Mostly like his poise and elevating the Offense around him
We also got a humble kid with awesome morality
He puts the blame on himself not to call out teammates
And he is a loyal soul. We all see the smoke show girlfriends or wives of these players
He stayed with his HS sweetheart and she is just a plain Jane from his hometown
All of this portray’s a really nice kid with massive upside.
Sky’s the limit

DITTO!

I can't contain myself with how excited I am about this kid. He's got it all: skills, demeanor, leadership, competitiveness and drive. He's a GREAT teammate. When something goes wrong, he puts the blame on his shoulders, UNLIKE his laughable embarrassment of a coach.

I was wrong about holding him out until the line is league average. I was a prominent member of the group that worried about his health and development should he be thrown into this mess, but I underestimated him. He's so good he can thrive even in 2024 hell-scape of a season, with the worst coaching staff ever assembled for an NFL team and the weakest talent of any team in the league. Hindsight is 20/20. The great ones rise above and elevate their teams, no matter the circumstances. What a player. If Kraft ****s this up (and I believe he will) over loyalty to useless Jerod Mayo, it will be unforgivable. He will go down in infamy in NE.

Regarding his greatness as a teammate, how good is this quote on his one interception Sunday? I'd follow this guy into battle.

“Yeah, just try to get to him quick and hopefully he gets in,” said Maye when asked about the play after the game. “I think I put on the wrong shoulder. I think if maybe I put on the opposite shoulder away from the defender, I think that’s maybe a completion there. But it was just unfortunate that it got tipped up. So, just a bummer.”

Great idea for a thread. Well done.

He's electrifying. The league is sleeping on him.

So are fans from teams we're about to play.

For instance, this:

"

Jayden Daniels started faster, Caleb Williams has had his moments, Drake Maye has shown promise, but right now? In a do-over draft, I think I'm going with Nix first.

It seems like every QB deep draft has a few good ones and a dud or two

I think Maye is the dud of this group "
Amazing find. Thanks. I would not have thought anyone would say that.

Not surprised, remember all the years Brady was a game manager but New England fans knew what he was.

If you could travel back in time to 2002 and told people Brady would win 5 more Super Bowls here and would be considered the best QB of all time, sane fans would have laughed you out of the room.

Good news is Maye is #1 playing outside of structure. Bad news is we have no structure.

I was not a "Play Drake" guy, but to be fair to us more conservative types, we didn't know he possessed the attributes you've called out. We were told he's young, needs time to develop, needs time to work on form and footwork, etc. And we did not see this Drake Maye in the preseason. It's impossible to predict something this extraordinary. His ability to feel pressure and escape this early in his career is remarkable. He makes reads so fast it's absurd. He decides to run in the right situations. Smart, smart player. He's a natural leader. With weapons and more experience, he is going to be very difficult to stop. Seeing how he plays, I'd rather them focus on building the offense, because teams are going to have difficulty scoring enough points to keep up. If they can get average defensive play, look out.

Still, conditions are dangerous with this line and lack of weapons. Guys not getting open makes him have to hold the ball. Fingers crossed.

What's interesting is that at this time in '21, most of us were feeling really good about Mac. He was the best looking and more winning rookie QB of that class. And going into '22, I was super excited.
Then JMD left, and the disastrous streak of BB decisions began.
If they correct those staffing & free-agent mistakes of 22-23, and Maye can be developed with stability and teambuilding around him, we could be back to relevancy next season.
I remember thinking Mac looked like a guy we could win with, provided he had a good surrounding cast. He was Alex Smith 2.0, a guy who wasn't going to carry the team on his back and win games with elite play, but he wouldn't lose many either.

This is totally different. The sky is the limit with Drake. He is already a problem for defenses, and with weapons he'll be a nightmare. He's carrying this team right now -- not to wins, but he is the only reason they are in these games at all. His leadership might be his most elite trait, because it can elevate the whole team.
