What's going on with the defense: injuries or coaching?

It is all coaching. It is players missing assignments Poor game plans, and poor calls all to make the patriots defense terrible. Covington is the first to blame and Mayo for not addressing it.

It’s like others said. Both, losing a great defensive minded coach hurts, but that good coach can’t do **** about injuries. Maybe mask a weakness when one goes down. Not 4….
4 went down in 2023 and 2024. Same situation. In 2023 the defense held up, in 2024 the defense is sh!t

It is the coaching. We lost the coaches that understand "strategy". Without highly athletic all-pro players, we are finished if our coaching is average as well. We have to have above average athleticism or above average coaching. Right now we have average athleticism and below average strategic coaching. The end result is a sh!t defense.

I still do not understand trading Judon. If he and Mayo did not get along or whatever other issues he had, it is probably more the coaches than Judon. He did not have these kind of issues in the past. Not having him along with Barmore and Peppers was a disaster waiting to happen and it did.
Injuries happen and we have overcome them before. The way this defense has been playing this year is mainly due to coaching . Our defense was not this atrocious even through a rough 2023 . In years past when the defense was mediocre it was one aspect, either the run d or the passing d was bad not both but this year both are equally bad. We need so many pieces, I hope they address a lot of these issues in the offseason, we need to be able to say 'wow' well done when the draft is over next April.

I agree but Judon is having a down year with 1.5 sacks and he has been benched in Atlanta. It might turn out that we traded Judon at the right time.

The coaching is nowhere near as good, but they are learning.

This defensive coaching staff is uniquely inept practically by design. Covington has not even called defenses before and appears incapable of in-game adjustments. Hell, his between-game adjustments have amounted to little more than mere window dressing. And to think he's working under a supposedly defense-oriented head coach. This perhaps is Mayo's most glaring failure thus far.

This defense NEEDS a skilled, experienced hand at the helm. Without that at least in an advisory role, it will improve only slightly with better players.

Judon wanted to get paid. He gave Bill a hard time last offseason, but quickly came to an agreement to get some more money upfront. Judon still didn’t like it and wanted a new deal this offseason. However, he goes through all that just to get traded to ATL, but not ask for a new deal with them. Very weird.

There may be something else we don’t know about.

What should we expect here: a professional organization, or coaching development school? On-the-job training is fine for some players, NOT for coaches at this level, especially with THIS team.

I'm past fed up with the Mayo experiment. Even with this paltry roster, coaching alone has cost the Patriots at least two wins at this point and arguably more.

Anyone who wants to cut these coaches slack because of roster issues/injuries, I give you Exhibit A -- the 3-8 Jete. When this season started, they had one of the league's top all-around rosters that only got better through high-priced signings via trade on BOTH sides of the ball. Their injury situation has not been severe.

It's not all about talent, folks. It's about superior coaching with a knack for crafting complementary TEAM chemistry and hiding poor talent through innovative scheme, sharp execution and disciplined play. We saw much of that under BB for years.

If the Patriots coaching staff remains unchanged going into 2025, don't expect a big leap given promising hauls in the draft and free agency.

The coaching sucks, any genius level defensive scheme, game planning or detail is gone.

The good news is the players are having fun and have a cool young coach to relate to.

Coaching, coaching and coaching. Injuries are a poor excuse. We have had injuries in the past and Bill never used that as an excuse. All teams have injuries , the back ups should be able to play also, they are supposed to be NFL players also !!

What Defense?? Asking for Tua.

Good post if Tee Higgins have a choice between a Mayo Coached Team and a Real NFL Team...I wonder which he would choose...
