Why does the coaching staff think OL positions are interchangable?

Apparently Nick Caserrio, who many hated here, wanted AJ Brown.

He's drafted Nico Collins and Tank Dell. Lol.

Collins was a good pick where he was taken; Tank Dell at 69 was a little too rich for my blood; and I also thought that he over-drafted John Metchie by at least a full round, if not two.

The big problem is they AREN'T interchangeable -- at least, not effectively. Each OL position has unique fundamentals/techniques and assignments, which is why you seldom see offensive lineman play more than one position -- it's too much to master. I'll bet all the jockeying around frustrates these guys.

At some point you have a ride with a line and let them develop, right? I don't understand the constant shuffling. Has to be more difficult to get continuity.

OP is 100% correct.

Countless linemen have talked about how hard it is mentally to move from one side of the line to the other. Every angle, every motion, every technique has to be completely reflected to the other side of the body. Some guys can do it, most can't.

The OL will settle when our best players find their best positions. Right now, Lowe at LT and Onwenu at RG should be the most untouchable spots on the line.

Sounds like a common theme Scouts recommend game changers and we go against that the scouts advise in those drafts. Felt like a bunch of people in the know did the research on the team and 1 person made the draft choice.

Because they have exactly one NFL starting caliber O Lineman on the team.
I'm sorry, but if you drafted 8, and brought in 8 more, and all 16 are bums...

Am I the only one here that wants to look at the coaching?

This many bad picks means you have the worst personnel guy in world history! Worse than the Persian guy who thought the line of Invincibles could break through the Spartan defensive line into the hot gates for a touchdown.

I have to look at coaches at some point.

Ask Montgomery the Bruins coach. He can’t figure out lines either….

Both can be true. Awful talent AND incompetent coaches.

I don't think both can be true.

Let me give you an example.

Onwenu went in the 6th round. If they knew he was going to be the best G taken that year, he would've gone earlier.

So they got lucky.

With that many tries since Onwenu, they haven't been lucky once? One dumb pick? One FA? They haven't been lucky at all?

So, for both to be true, they would not only have to be bad at coaching & bad at evaluating, but incredibly unlucky.

The numbers are too great, that's what I'm saying.

I liked Metchie in college, but I think he was over drafted only because of his injury. He hasn't been the same since recovering from that and leukemia.

And for the same reason: Mr Pour-A-Sip's Forwards suck, same as MayoNays' OLmen.

The solution, or at least the beginning of it, is the same for both teams too: Fire their grocery shoppers. Nothing - and I mean absolutely Nothing - will change unless that happens first.

We are playing our best OL. Barring injury, they will continue to play 100% of the reps at their current positions, as they have before (third time?).

This line has been playing surprisingly well. Personally, I think that the OL coach has been doing an outstanding job with what he has. Only Onwenu is an NFL starting quality player, perhaps the only one for us in 2025. One can argue whether any of the rest should be on an NFL roster. But they are being coached up. The situation has been made worse by the many injuries, especially to Lowe and Andrews (and even backup center Jake Andrews).

BTW, if Lowe and Jacobs continue to develop, either or both could be valuable backups going forward. They are both swing OT's.
==========
BTW, the coach did not only have to work with an OL with many injuries. He also had to work with Okorafor, Wallace, and Robinson. The first two have added NOTHING. Robinson may develop, but he currently cannot pass block at all.
