Until baseball implements a salary cap (which will likely be never) then teams that have the capital should spend like drunken sailors. If that means the runts like Tampa or Kansas City can't consistently compete then boo hoo. It makes their stories even better when they do have their flash in the pan.
The fact is Henry has the money to spend. He has done it in the past but now has decided to hand the reigns to the nerds ignoring how much of baseball is mental and about momentum. You can plug in numbers for guys like Judge and I am sure their algorithms will project him to be the World Series MVP but instead he slumped and was a big part of the reason they went down 0-3.
This season the Sox got hot about 6 weeks before the all-star break and a legitimate extra bat and starting pitcher really could have shown the fans, Cora, and the team that the front office believed in them. Instead they traded for a dinosaur starting pitcher who got hurt (surprise!) pretty soon after he got here, a couple of underwhelming relievers who got dinged up, an average catcher, and then another starting pitcher who has potential but was never really going to help last season. They just continue to bargain hunt when they have the money to supplement the roster with premium players.
