What did Drake Maye learn today?

What misses? He sailed the int and threw one ball a little behind the receiver but catchable.
Are you talking about throw aways?

There was a fluky int on a tipped ball and anoint he sailed. Thee weren’t really any other interceptable throws.
There were other throws where he was slightly off target. One in particular would have been a TD if he put it in front of the receiver, but he threw it behind him on a right to left crossing route. That wasn’t the only one where he missed what should have been good plays.

He was off on a few middle of the field crossing routes and out patterns as well.

About 15-20% of his passes were off.
Yes, except I think the percentage of off target throws was higher.

I expect it to be more like a yo yo. He won’t necessarily just get better. Defenses will learn his tendencies. But he can better in some areas consistently, week to week. The ball was sailing on him in his first start. I think that’s more likely a mechanical issue than nerves. While the line did suck, he needs to learn how to manipulate the pocket better. And of course, the timing patterns on some of the staple plays like crossers should improve. He’s going to make mistakes. He’s going throw interceptions and he’s going to miss receivers. That’s okay.
There is no argument.

Just an observation that from the college tape Maye had the same weakness in his first game.

I don't even understand the rest of your post.
We heard from the start of preseason that they were working on his mechanics. Now almost a third of the way into the season he has improved enough to start and he is showing inconsistent accuracy likely due to some issue with his mechanics. That’s reason for concern. Biggest question is whether his mechanics improved in practice and he regressed under game pressure, or is he just not getting better in that aspect of his game?

If he has been improving in practice and game pressure or nerves caused him to regress that’s an important lesson that could only be learned by playing him. Now the important question is how he responds and whether he improves as a result. Time will tell.

Poor mechanics would be very worrisome. It's tough to fix that. If it was just nerves...the mechanics won't be an issue.

He was very accurate by nfl standards.

His mechanics were fine his throws were accurate, a few slightly off target like every qb. He sailed one, other than that he was perfectly fine.
If you disagree cite the plays.

Yes, except I think the percentage of off target throws was higher.

Bedard had 5 clearly inaccurate throws that were Maye's fault which is 15%, and another couple that were questionable.

One game sample sizes just aren’t enough to say much. There were many games Brady would have this same type of issue with high throws. In fact, most QBs have it, or other similar issues, at times. Could be the grip, a wet ball, mechanics, nerves, many things. I’d go with mechanics as the most likely answer, but I think it’s also not concerning at all right now. He seemed to settle down a lot after his first TD pass.

Not everyone can throw dumpoffs, shovel passes, and screens to mask their deficiencies though

The five inaccurate throws according to Bedard:

1) 1:53 first qtr pick
2) 2:52 second quarter - misses wide open Hooper
3) 12:11 third quarter - Behind Douglas on cross.
4) 9:35 fourth qtr - Wide to Hasty on sideline
5) 1:30 4th - Airmails Douglas - Lucky no interception

All true. Brady would often start games off, and settle down. But it wasn't common.

The only reason I bring this up after Maye's first game is I repeatedly heard this knock on him before the draft and when he was in college.

If Maye came out and had trouble reading the defense or something else, I never would have brought it up.

This was the thing I was really watching all game.

I'll give him an A+ for realizing his dream and self criticism.

Patriots posted this video compilation, said it was all of Maye’s plays. I went through it and looked at each one. I then cross checked the ESPN play by play to verify who he targeted and play results. Found that there were several plays listed on the play by play but missing from the compilation: Q2 SACK @ 12:06, Q3 passes to Hasty @ 3:49 and Pop @ 3:04, and Q4 SACK @ 5:56.

ESPN box score gave Maye’s passing statistics as 20 for 33. I tried to be fair and found ten to twelve throws I thought were inaccurate, so roughly 1 in 3 of his throws were off target.

I logged these inaccurate or questionable throws, approximate game times taken as shown on the compilation video:

Q1
7:50, 3rd & 9 @ 23, airmailed to the bench
1:52, 3rd & 4 @ 31, INT to a wide open defender

Q2
9:53, 3rd & 4 @ 33, high to Gibson who caught it for +12
8:09, 3rd @ 8 @ 47, deflected
2:53, 3rd & 12 @ 19, threw way behind Hooper
0:28, 1st & 10 @ 40, threw high to Polk
0:21, 1st & 10 @ Texans 47, high to Pop who made a noteworthy catch for +8

Q3
12:10, 3rd & 9 @ 27, out in front of Pop
6:51, 1 & 10 @ 24, threw low to Hooper who made a shoe top catch and then fumbled when tackled

Q4
14:06, 1st & 10 @ 22, screen to Gibson deflected for INT
9:34, 2nd & 5 @ Texans 35, off target to Hasty
1:31, 3rd & 3 @ Texans 23, either throwaway or way off target from scramble

I see. In that context then your concern makes more sense.

Greg Bedard gave him a C- for Sunday
That's about what I would have given him. C, C+ since it's his first start, but he's supposedly been taking reps all season.

Everyone here who is super cool with 3 turnovers in 3 quarters and a 20-point blowout loss at home, is absolutely stunning to me. Wee, he threw a long touchdown pass (A good effort by Boutte on the play getting ignored as well). Great.
