Mayo seemingly blaming Bill for the state of the roster

You know I'm a Bill guy. The pick was a collosal bust. But at the time it was the correct move. I just wish they gave him one more shot with another rookie QB.

My initial reaction with the Bill firing speculation was that he's the GOAT and no one is immune from being set back by missing on a QB, which is a hard position to evaluate. We were in position to get a better prospect and Bill's resume still warrants a 2nd chance at rebuilding, this time doing it fully vs. the half-rebuild they did with Mac.

But the more I really thought about it and the personnel/coaching decisions he made around Mac were just malpractice. It's one thing to make decisions and they fail, it's another to do things that are blatantly incompetent. I love what Bill did here as a coach AND as a GM over the balance of 24 years, but it was a trainwreck the last few. It was so inept that I think it made sense to move on and let someone else try with the new QB. The way BB handled Mac didn't point to someone who can foster the growth of a young QB.

Not really a fan of what they replaced Bill with though, so that's a whole separate issue...

I know it sucked at the time being turned down BUT has anyone looked at the stats so far for both Aiyuk and Ridley? Aiyuk hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire this year and yesterday Ridley on 8 targets, ZERO catches. Polk was trashed yesterday, can you imagine our 20 something million wr giving us that stat line? Dodged a couple bullets.

I get your point but one of those was a drop by Ridley, another was a 50/50 ball, and six of them were Will Levis mistakes.

IMO it's a tough call on when to spend big on a WR.

If you don't have a true WR#1 you have what we have, a bunch of #2s (lol!) who can't get separation on their own and need scheme or lucky breaks to get open.

If you do have a true WR#1 but a terrible OL you also have what we have, no time to throw so it doesn't matter how good your WRs are.

BB's answer was to just not spend big on WRs.

The Commanders staff inherited a 4-13 roster just like the Patriots but they improved it.

Helped to have #1 overall draft pick, which we could have had if we did a better job of tanking.

If you're building your own team you would rather inherit the cap space and lack of bad contracts than a handful of overpaid players.

Agree with the point this team has the resources to rebuild.

What's lacking is patience from the fan base.

I don't think BB was ever much for coddling young players he ran his program and you enter in the deep end and either you sink or swim. Happened many times with WRs through the years. The NFL isn't a place for babying.

Agree. I mean we have been fans and saw everything. I'm just happy we have our QB and I know the team will put pieces around Drake to ensure he is able to reach his full potential.

I don't think Mayo is doing a great job with the media, but it's also kind of a losing battle. The Boston sports media doesn't actually talk about the sports they cover. They just talk about front office/ownership power dynamics and if the team is being cheap. WTF is anyone supposed to do with that question? Other teams don't deal with that BS from the media. They don't fish for the new GM or head coach to trash the last guy. It's just the Boston media that wants to drum up that crap, because honestly the Belichick exit is an easier story to sell than the garbage team they have.

You can't blame the media, IMO. The public goes for click bait. The local media are good at generating click bait. It's on Mayo to not feed the trolls.

BB had the right approach. He gave the media as little as he could get away with, and forbid pretty much everyone else from interacting with the media except for Tom's weekly spot and a few limited, arranged interviews.

IMO Mayo should have paid more attention to how Bill did things with respect to the media.

One thing has become consistent with Mayo....he always has something to say.

Criticizing a 6X Super Bowl Champion coach is unwise. BB is not infallible but Mayo needs some PR coaching as he doesn't have the credentials to lay blame when he hasn't had any success at this level.

Mac Jones was the right pick. I was torn on Parsons as he was a boom/bust type pick. But if he had dropped to NE, I would've gone Parsons. But Dallas taking him made it easy for NE to take Jones. I don't recall many people, if any, complaining about the pick. However, there were posters including myself that were expressed concerns very early during the season on that were shot down by other posters.

Since I've been watching, I'd say the worst 1st round picks are "dancing man" Chris Canty, Tebucky Jones until he moved to S and was decent, "I almost got to the QB" Dominique Easily, the IR regular Isaiah Wynn, and of course the "****ing animal" Harry. Harry by far had the worst attitude of any of them. Easily I heard was a turd in the locker room though. Mac Jones seen crying 3 years in a row was a terrible look for him. Nate Solder's twin Cole Strange is on his way to joining the list.

I think you're suffering from some recency bias there My Dude. Kenneth (don't call him Ken) Sims was the number one overall pick in '82 and an unmitigated disaster for the Pats given where he was selected. Chris (why) Cant He tackle? 29th overall in '97. Chris (sigh) Singleton 8th overall in '90. Were all even worse selections than Harry. Given Harry was chosen at 32 I'll give (dis)honorable mentions to Ras-I (33) and Chad Jackson (36)

As your talking 'since '81' 1st rounders the pool of choices misses out on my personal choice for worst Pats 1st rounder, Phil Olsen. He was taken 4th overall in '70 and never played a single down for the Pats. He was injured in his 1st preseason then, in an act of legendary managerial malpractice, the Sullivan front office neglected to send out option letters and he was declared a FA, he promptly left for the Rams. When you see us old timers unloading on the Sullivans you're not hearing the half of it. The truth is, it was the Pats ownership far more than the play of the team that made them a laughingstock back in the day.

Yes. The players you mention were disasters but they produced at the NFL level either here or somewhere else. Even Sims made the all-rookie team. You could say Harry and his 22 catches was "producing" but hes done nothing besides that.

Ras-I and Chad were 2nd rounders.

Didn't know about Olsen. I started at '81 as that is when I can say I knew players and got pissed after losses.
