It really all comes down to the QB. Shanahan in SF was struggling badly with Hoyer at QB. I watched every game he started (and lost) and it was a worse **** show then what we are seeing in NE. Hoyer was doing sign language/looking like a pantomime at the line of scrimmage trying to act like Brady/Manning running the clock down only to throw it at the feet of a WR. It was among the worst QB play I've ever seen. Then when the 49ers pulled off the Jimmy G trade, you saw things immediately turn around and the potential of the team.Unfortunately I am starting to feel like there may be some finger pointing starting to happen behind the scenes about who is at fault. Maybe I am reading into it too much but Mayo's "head coach of the offense" comment and his recent comments about needing to get the ball out quicker read to me like a subtle "don't look at me" when it comes to the offensive struggles. When things start going sideways people start getting protective and I have to assume there is some second guessing about the tackle position which would have fingers pointed at Wolfe too.
In reality I agree with most in this thread that AVP would likely be the first head to roll if changes are made but I just don't like that we were told Mayo is a "leader of men" type and now the men he's leading seem to be changing direction. Not saying I want him fired but I just wish he would present a more cohesive public perception with the staff as a whole instead of saying one thing and backtracking or saying something that could seem like finger pointing.
By mid season, Mayo needs to seriously consider putting Maye out their and getting reps to show them whether he has the potential or not. If Maye is incapable, Mayo won't last past year 2. Year 3 max.
