Thoughts on comments from coaching staff

Not a fan of a coach shredding players in front of the media.

No problem at all shredding a player in front of the team or privately.

Blaming the players seems like self-absolvement.
Every coach has a way they motivate. Not Every coach has the same style. Some methods work in different ways.

I dunno, I also hear him say every time, "It starts with me." I don't think he's saying, "The coaches are all good and the players need to step up." More that they ALL need to be better, from him to the last guy on the roster.

Also, I can't remember the last time a team lost a game by 21 points, and I left the head coach's press conference satisfied with what he said about it. You come off a blow out, there's no simple answer that's going to feel good. And I'm not one of those people that needs these coaches/players to get down on their knees and beg my forgiveness for a poor performance. They probably feel worse about it than I do, so what's the point?

Now that I think of it, I don't really need press conferences AT ALL. They really do nothing for me.

Well us fans can see it with our naked eyes on TV or in person. Teams are not drawing up innovative schemes to get to our QB they are getting there right after the snap... That's on individual Players. Mayo can't believe they're that bad the OL that is.

That's right. Lowe, Wheatley Jr. ,Anderson, those are The players mayo had to put together and o line with. I keep seeing post about stranger. Stranger isn't coming back this season! Teams are getting there with 4 guys! Unbelievable.

The premise of this thread is disingenuous. If you actually watch the video you posted, you'll hear that he said "[its not one persons fault,] its all of our fault and it starts with me".

They could probably get there with 3.

That's worse thing that's could possibly happen but it would net us the First Overall. I feel deep down he's our only hope for our LT position to be serviceable he's was our Starting LG before the injury. So he has that going for him if he had to transition to LT.

Military has an old old saying:

Admonish in private;
Praise in public.

So, I get that he wants to give the media something, but I think this is the wrong bone ..(unless one of his Fakebook/IG stars already posted about it online of course).

The o-line has been awful. I mean worse than it should be even with five scrubs. They deserved to have a talking to. I don't know if that equates to Mayo passing the buck.

He didn’t have to put together an OL with those guys. He and Wolf chose to draft who they drafted and extend who they extended. These were their choices.

If we wanted to clone Bill, we could have gotten some DNA from a stain on Jordon's cheerleader outfit.

Bill had his own way of holding players accountable for themselves. I don't have an issue with calling them out. But I do have an issue with not also taking responsibility. I know I've heard him say we need to coach better so I don't want to go too far. And I'm sure Mayo has a way of talking to his players one on one that I'm sure they take way more to heart then media comments.

Let's just say it was one thing that Bill was smart about. It almost always started with we have to coach better before he got into other things.

As long as Mayo has the ears of his players which I think he does at least for now, then this isn't a problem.
My concern is that they are doing it in the media.
If Covington believes he did a great job and wants to call out the players do it in the locker room. Distancing himself from the problems publicly has a bad look.

Same with the OL. They deserve to get lit up, but why go to the media and say “it’s the players, not me”?

I’ve always felt the correct approach (in any firms) is praise publicly, condemn privately. And the leader takes the heat publicly and delivers it privately.

Last week Covington said “it wasn’t Xs and Os” and blamed the players.

Now Mayo has a team meeting and shows the OL a mirror, then tells the media about it, saying it’s on them.

This is a big departure from “it all started with me, and we need to coach better”.

Thoughts on this?

Guess the Diversity mural didn't motivate

Almost entirely agree.

That said so far the locker room seems to be buying in. I'm not going to go reading between the lines and stiring the pot until there are real signs the locker room has a problem.

If a player had spoke out about that would be a whole different thing. But no doubt losing and comments like these can/will change things I just think it's to quick to go there.

IMO feels like mayo is in between following the " plan" and asserting himself as HC.
That's the problem with Collaboration. They seem intent on working together so right now I think we are fine. But the more losing occurs and I'm talking a season or two it will only be natural for each to wonder if the other's mistakes held them back. And possibly worse than just wondering.

I thought all pieces of the FO/HC were on the same page whatever that page might be. We'll see more of Maye now, for better or worse.

I think they are. So I'm not going there yet but as time passes it won't be as easy and finger pointing is only natural that's why I think you need a more clear power structure but it is what it is and for now Mayo and Wolfe seem committed to this approach and I wouldn't expect anything to change for awhile that's why I said after a season or 2. Hopefully things start headed in a better direction before that has a chance to happen.

You mean disingenuous as in it's like the OP had an agenda?
