My only caveat is that Maye needs to be at least a solid starter.

Otherwise, it will take until we get a QB to turn this team around. We will have over $250M of cap room in 2025 and 2026, and we will also be able to defer compensation for some of the incoming players.

Personally, the cap situation is so good that I would make sure that we had a solid backup QB, better than Brissett, signed to a 2-3 year contract.
Cap space is a phony number if you don’t intend to use all of it.
Last year we thought we had 60 million after resigning some of our own free agents, but in real life we only had 20 and we gave 40% of that to Jacoby Brisett.

What changed from weeks 1-2 compared to week 3?

The opposing defense… great defenses can stop the run and force you to pass. They can take away the one thing you do well and force you to be uncomfortable.

In the Patriot’s case take away the run and they’re toast… they can’t pass block at all.

On top of bad talent along the line, the offense also has no identity… Van Pelt is just out there calling plays.

The one pass play where he intended to roll Brissett out but Onwenu blocked down on the DT, the TE coming in motion across the line didn’t bother to chip the DE so he was left completely unblocked. This was Will McDonald, the Jets first overall pick last year, you’d think he would be a priority… or at least accounted for. Dumb.

Defensively… if you want to play great defense, play less defense.

The Pat’s offensive time of possession lasted 19:56 minutes on the field, the Jets 40:04… they held the ball more than twice as long. Why?

The Pats offense had 9 possessions, 7 of them lasted 5 plays or fewer. 1 fumble, 5 punts, 2 time expired… 7 total sacks allowed.

Beyond that the defense just tackled poorly. The coaches made the boneheaded decision to make Marco Wilson a game day inactive and play Alex Austin instead… he got smoked.

This GM doesn’t know how to build a team. The coaches are either young or in completely over their heads. The Patriots are one of the worst teams in the league.

This is what happens when you fire “the problem” after you made his life difficult for the last three years. Now there are too many chefs in the kitchen along with a young owner who wants to have a voice… with not a single one being a master chef. Unfettered collaboration…

There’s nothing exciting or fun about this team. There’s nothing to look forward too regarding this season anyway. It’s a mostly talented team playing bad football…

If healthy Cole Strange would be our best OLman. And you hate the pick.

Coaches get fired because they screw up. In this case, BB did not leave the cupboard bare. 2023 was one of our best drafts in a long long time (much better than 2024). BB responsibly left the best cap situation in the league. BB also left a good/great defense. Yes, the new management has to fix the offense which is a QB, 2 WRs, and 2 OTs. A total of 5 players. The rest are #2s and #3s that can be easily found in FA, like RB2 and TE2, since we have the most cap space in the NFL.

You are raging mad about 5 key positions that can easily be filled in 2 years with the resources the Pats have, assuming the resources are used responsibly. What happened in 2019 or 2021 does not matter in 2024 and forward.

You can't see the forest for the trees.
Cole Strange has been at best an average G on the few occasions when he played. He might be the best OL if he returned but only because the other OL are mediocre at best (including the overrated Onwenu) and mostly way below league average

To say that BB left the team in good shape because of cap space and #3 pick is non sense

He left this team like the Titanic after hitting the iceberg

You have no argument. Your insight is the Titanic sinking. LOL

I could say that you are a Bill apologist and in Bill we truster with blinders on.

Bill is the main reason this team is awful this year. Now next year some of the blame on Bill will start to fade

The Jets signed Tyron Smith at offensive left tackle, Morgan Moses at offensive right tackle, and John Simpson at offensive left guard. All three players are older and on short contracts. The Pats could have done the same thing as a bridge to their "OL of the future". The Pats can draft the future OL in 2024 and 2025 and integrate the younger players in as the older players retire. The Pats went the cheap route instead. If we had these veterans on the OL, Maye could be playing as he outplayed Brissett in camp. We could start integrating our future running and passing game. In 2025 the Pats could draft a left tackle, get Cole Strange back, have Wallace and Robinson after a year of training, etc. and have a smooth transition to a long term OL solution. Why didn't the Pats do that? The only reason I can see is that they are cheap. All of this has nothing to do with BB.

On the defensive side there were a lot of young FAs we could have signed on 3 and 4 year deals. That would have helped take our good defense to the next level. We signed no FAs of significance (Takitaki and Hawkins are not significant). Additionally we lost Judon. Our defense is going backwards for no reason. Why did the Pats not sign any defensive FAs? The only reason I know is that they are cheap. All of this has nothing to do with BB.

It will take a few years to rebuild the team, but believe it or not, the Pats are in a good position to rebuild if they make good decisions and spend the money they have been saving. So far drafting Maye is the only good decision that I see. And they barely spent their cap dollars. All of this has nothing to do with BB.

The UFAs have to want to come. In Patriots case, no QB no leadership no playmakers. Of course those UFAs would rTher sign with Jets and play with Rogers.

BB left roster in such bad shape that decent UFA with options does not want to pkay here.

Cap space mostly unusable thanks to BB roster decisions

Guys that are well past their prime on the last year or two of their career chase money, not rings. No Super Bowl bound team will sign Tyron Smith, that is why Dallas let him go. Do you think the Chiefs tried to bid for T Smith? Ridiculous. But you will not look at any other viewpoint and only post excuses, so have a nice day.

Disagree. If the money is similar, UFAs will always go to the better team. Not ring chasing but their value will always be higher moving forward on the better team.
I agree with you that Wolfe whiffed big time in his first year
But BB left team in shambles

I’m afraid it looks like the panthers offense is better than ours now too.

Isn’t it the job of the front office to make players want to come here?
FAs go to bad teams all the fine. Tennessee had no problem getting a lot of them to sign, and it surely wasn’t because they are a great team, have a proven coach, or for that slug they have at qb.

This was a great write up. More posts like this and I'm going to be kicking myself for waiting so long to leave the Pulpit.

He also traded away Shaq Mason for nothing
He drafted and released Isaiah Wynn
Drafted Cole Strange instead of first team all pro CB Trent McDuffie (who everyone said should be picked by Pats)
Left the cupboard completely bare at WR, OL, RB (other than Stevenson), QB
Nice of him to leave the # 3 overall draft pick which means they were one of the worst teams in the league under his GM and coaching
The cap space simply means under his leadership the team had no good players on offense to re sign or extend
He has whiffed on so many draft picks the 5 years, I can not even fit the list in here
Completely destroyed his 1st round QB draft pick Mac Jones, setting the team back at least 5 years

BB left a completely f'ed up worst in the league roster with no QB and no offensive leaders.

Right, thank you Bill for all you did with this roster and putting the team in a position for multiple years with top 5 draft picks and a painfully anemic offense

BB to some Pats fans is like Trump to liberals or Obama to conservatives. It's always gonna be their fault.

40yrpatsfan,

You ASSUME that Wallace can be a reasonable starter at RT. We have no NFL evidence supporting that evaluation.
he's shown he can run block at this level, which is really all we're getting out of Onwenu at RT. Put Onwenu at RG and we're improved at that spot.

When did he show that?
