NFL GAME DAY DISCUSSION Week 2 "Other Games" Thread

How did those other rookie QBs look yesterday? Bo Nix getting valuable game experience by throwing a pick in the EZ? Caleb Williams getting his ass kicked? Will Levi's ****ting his pants in back to back games?
Might be a wise course of action for Maye to sit on the bench for a few more weeks.

Jayden Daniels is the only one that hasn’t looked awful. Its probably going to be a long year for these guys and maye once he gets in.

Yeah... This is so overblown with Maye. Folks see him miss an easy layup due to mechanical issues every once in a while and for whatever reason decide that that must be a huge part of his game, when it's really this tiny percentage. Meanwhile, the huge sum of other passes he makes with beautiful touch and accuracy are overlooked entirely.

Sam was talking out of his... uh... bottle. Maye's accuracy was far and away considered to be one of his major strengths.
From his NFL Pre-Draft Scouting Report:

'Great accuracy. Throws well to all three levels and shows flashes of special touch.'

If we're looking at it in that light I guess we ought to give him props for staying power. That post went up at 12:26 AM, what started as some excessive day drinking turned into a marathon (we don't judge here). That's some genuine long distance runnin' right there. Talent like that deserves recognition, I tilt my glass in his direction

Guys fall asleep in the La-Z-Boy, wake up, have another drink, check PatsFans, fire off a bit of steam at the other stupid posters, and settle back into the La-Z-Boy for the night. It happens all the time.

Maye is extremely inaccurate on short and medium passes? I don’t think that’s correct at all.
That dude just makes **** up. Always has.

My man, this is a SamBam gaffe we're talkin' 'bout. How often is he gonna get props for anything having to do with the **** he just makes up? I say we at least give him the benefit of the doubt (along with a modest tilt our glasses) and credit him with the full day binge. It's a small thing really, when you consider how much comic relief he provides.

Of course I understand YMMV and it is your cognac snifter after all

When you have the best QB, you rarely have "off" seasons but the Bills as a team are not as good as they've been the last couple years. Allen makes up for that, however so the drop off is limited. Like the Brady years here.
Dolphins have gotten worse also. Jets got better at QB, but the roster is worse overall.
This game might be more an indictment of the Dolphins than a coronation of the Bills.
Someone here a while ago was wondering what the top coaches records would be for HCs when they don't have their top QB. Many of the HCs, like Holmgren, Jimmy Johnson, Lombardi, Madden, McCarthy, Walsh and Seifert have only had top QBs. For the rest of them I've been putting together their records. I have the regular season totals done and I'm still working on the playoff records.

That throw on the run by Stroud was sensational.
The escape, but the best thing is he throws a perfect spiral, perfect placement where only his wr can catch it.
He was cool as ice whole time. Well done.
You'll never win big with a running qb like Lamar.
But a guy who keep his eyes on recs while running and deliver a perfect throw is valuable.
Exactly. A QB who can also run is great. A running QB is not. The running QBs are quick to give up and start looking for a place to run. I think Maye is a QB who can also run. Maybe we'll find out this season.

That would be a very interesting analysis
It will open up a lot of questions, some of those coaches hardly play without a great quarterback, so there is sample size question also

would be really interested.

i am really intrigued by marvin lewis records. never had a HoF QB still had winning record. bill has a 84- 103 win record without brady.

As I started doing it I noticed that also but I ended up with about 16 decent comparisons. There's also the problem of determining who's a top Q and who's not. Was Len Dawson? How about Flacco or Bradshaw?

In college scouting reports thus was frequently mentioned. Will send you link

Josh Allen performs really well on the field. In more private places, not so much...

A couple of quick hits:

- Trevor Lawrence is proof you either need to hit an absolute homerun or bust out on a high first round QB picks. The fact that Lawrence is a top 3 paid QB in this league is a joke. He is a good, not great QB. He has far too many games like yesterday. The Jags were stupid not to wait until Lawrence finished out his rookie contract knowing they had a fifth year option before signing the guy. But they probably would have had to give him top dollar anyway.
- Baker Mayfield is proof of the theory that bad teams ruin first round draft pick QBs. The guy is finally starting to live up to expectations a half dozen or so years after being drafted and on his fifth team. He has finally found a home where they put him in a position to succeed.
- On the flip side, I think the Bears may be ruining Caleb Williams like they ruined Justin Fields. I know that Williams was believed to be more NFL ready than Drake Maye, but Williams is showing he was not ready for prime time. He would have benefitted from sitting and learning a bit. If he has more games like yesterday, he could be another Zach Wilson. So far he has looked more like Wilson (running around trying to make the big play and paying for it) than Patrick Mahomes.

They were wrong.

Also, PFF in the premium service which is not available to the general public, but they sometimes write articles with them in it and they determined a number of data points that relate to easier throws. Clean Pocket, No Play Action and Early downs. Maye was the best, other than Williams no prospect last year was close. This also does not really factor in the weaker receivers and line he dealt with.
In addition, coach Christensen, Manning and Brady old coach that has worked with Maye, completely laughed at the idea Maye had issues completing the short/easy passes when someone said that was an issue with him. Besides the fact I watched every throw and was not a thing.

Weaknesses

  • Inefficient throwing motion creates inconsistencies in accuracy.

  • Receivers had to chase too many intermediate throws into the turf
  • Leaves the ball behind crossing routes and RPO targets.
