Patriots legendary offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia was a guest on the “Eye on Foxborough” podcast.

First and foremost, while there are some Patriots fans out there that would love to see Scar come out of retirement a third time, it’s not happening.
Scarnecchia, however, provided so many pearls of wisdom, it was important to provide several of his takes.

So here’s the best of Scar from the podcast:

Heh. The article mentions the hope of some that Scar might have another go. For this group? As I look at his remarks, the thing that stands out is his emphasis on tackles' having sufficient athleticism to play the position, yet here the team is working toward an all-guard o-line. It can't work. The cover story (as in CYA) is,""Oh, that's OK: we'll just be a running team." I don't buy it. That's a rationalization, not a plan.

He has talked in the past about the importance of continuity both in practices and in games, Clearly the new management cares very little about that aspect of developing an o-line.

The need to begin working on a replacement at center, though not as much discussed as the tackle issue, might be even more pressing than the need for two (that's two) tackles. Backups at that position are pretty pathetic, aren't they?

The o-line is a mess, one that to this point has gone essentially unaddressed, it seems to me. Next year's draft had better average at least 300 lbs/man.

It's not surprising he mentions sufficient athleticism... our current two starting tackles have long arms and are poor athletes. He was telling us something without being insulting. I don't have that gift.

Thanks for post.

Scar is an ultimate all-time Pats hero & great example-mentor for others. I for one don’t want a 70+ scar back. (Wouldn’t mind [love] the 60-yr old though LOL)

LOL. Neither do I! I just tell myself it is a privilege of age to be a pain in the ass from time to time.

It would be interesting to see if Dante's tough love style would be accepted by this generation of players who are paid and more coddled in college than during his heyday. He was the only coach in the NFL to get Trent Brown motivated so he would probably do fine.

Agreed. You said what I've stated recently, that we not only need a legit LT (especially if Wallace turns out to be a solid RT), but Center is an absolute NEED as well. Even if Andrews plays next year and does so at a high level, they'd be an injury away from disaster. Maye needs a solid young Center in front of him and we also need a solid backup to whoever the young Center we get to replace Andrews is.

When is the last time a Patriots OL was projected to be this bad. Pre Belichick/Brady?

Last year at this time?

The big difference is Brown the quitter on the 2023 roster.

IMO, Lowe/Okorafor, Sow/Strange, Andrews, Robinson, Onwenu/Wallace is very close in quality to what we had last year.

We might have some contribution from Thomas, Jacobs, Leverett and (Jordan) and (Hudson), or not.
======
primarily
OUT: Brown, Wheatley, Mafi
IN : Okorafor, Wallace, Robinson

Last year is arguably much better, but that presumes that Brown had any interesting in playing.

Bill had a pretty bad OL going into the 2000 season when he first was HC. 2001 wasn't projected to be much better, but Mike Compton was a big addition because Damien Woody couldn't snap a football out of the shotgun.

The OL has declined each year since 2022 to where we're at now.

I don't remember the exact sequence of injuries early last season, but in the 1st month each of these guys missed games: Brown, Onwenu, Andrews, Strange (and maybe more). To me that seemed worse than what we're dealing with now. Sow & Strange both out (and maybe Lowe too) is tough but we do have some depth & flexibility. Our best OL can play G or RT, Oko can play LT or RT, Wallace can probably play either tackle spot, the guards can all play either side, Zachary Thomas can play everywhere, so this will help us weather the storm.

Yeh I guess projection wise there have been bad ones. But they weren't historically bad on the field itself.

I've seen some mention this OL in the same stratosphere as the Texans in 02. An expansion team.

Wow! all that time

From the 2022 season to

the 2023 season to the 2024 pre-season

Was going to mention that I remember the kvetching back then about the O-line.

These last few years have been the worst I've seen since 2000. This year's line could very well rival the 2002 Texans.

"I know everyone has raved a lot about Maye the last two games he played, and the skills he’s shown and all the rest of that. I think that’s a decision they made based on what was best for the football team, and maybe, Drake Maye’s health, and jeopardizing that health might come into play."

It's telling that his speculation on why Drake isn't starting goes immediately to the OL jeopardizing Drake's health. The "Play Drake" contingent is blissfully unconcerned about that, but the GOAT OL coach is. I wish JB a very safe and healthy season.

Bill dumped Thuney and that was a HUGE mistake. What makes it worse is he's picking up SB wins with KC like blueberries off of a bush.

Yep, what a silly idea to play the best QB on a football team. I hope the OL is fixed by next season and maybe then he'll play.

Dante is speculating on why the best QB isn't playing and he's giving everyone the company line. I wouldn't expect anything else from him.
