We will never know what Mac could have been here were it not for Bill the Coach's inexcusable dereliction in the the way he handled him, in the lousy coaching staff he put in place, and in the abysmal roster with which Bill the GM surrounded him. We may get an indication of what might have been possible in how Mac does with other teams going forward. Such discussions as this tend to get emotional. It'll be nice to have a little empirical data to consult, data arising out of what must inevitably be a better situation than that with which Mac was burdened here by his coach's incompetence. Was it his old coach or Zappe that said that publicly? That makes a big difference to me. The latter is throwing his teammate under the bus while showing nothing to warrant you replacing him as starter.
NFL Notebook: Giardi - QB plan should come into focus; what we're hearing on free agency
Both are flawed players. Both are replaceable. But both have started a bunch of games throughout their careers - Brissett 48, Minshew 37 - and understand, at this point in their careers, they're caretakers or bridges to the next guy. That's important.www.bostonsportsjournal.com
We know Jones and Zappe were not exactly best friends for whatever reason. The above note from Giardi to me means A) Zappe views/viewed himself as a starter and nothing else and B) Zappe was not an innocent bystander making the QB room a toxic mess.....and a veteran leader is needed to help fix that problem. I'm sure this offseason and Maye's arrival was a reality check for him and I expected him to do what he's doing now if he wants to continue his NFL career as a backup here or somewhere else.
Also re the "driving us crazy" report - it read to me like it was more about Mac being a goofball with his new team (which he is) than anything football related.
Sorry, fanboys, Bill's Super Bowl rings are irrelevant to this discussion. The Bill who won those rings was long gone by the time Mac showed up.
It might not be out of place to mention that the player Bill the Coach seemed so to despise was drafted by Bill the GM.
Mac isn't blameless, of course. A stronger man might have withstood the challenges better than he, and I suspect his overscripted, precious preppie manner may not over time have endeared him to his teammates. Here too, we'll see how he fares on his new team in what will almost certainly be a less toxic environment.
I admire Zappe. Why shouldn't he aspire to be the starter? He is under no obligation to buy into adverse assessments from coaches, fans, teammates, or anybody else. His job was to try to win the job. Objectively speaking, did he ever have a real shot at succeeding? Almost certainly not. But his belief in himself and his ambition and his evident willingness to put in the work are all admirable traits. They are exactly what you want in a young qb. Maybe if Mac had had some of the Zapster's Moxie, he would have done better. I wish him well, though I would not bet on his ever being more than a so-so backup, a role in which he will likely make more after all in his lifetime than many of those who dismiss him.
We hardly know anything about Maye as an NFL QB at this point, but his physical skills are on point, he seems a willing worker, and in the irksomely limited opportunities he has had to show what he might be able to do, he's done fine.
Brisset is Zappe with a resume, a stopgap. I bought a '69 Impala once for $400. It served me fine for two years until the blow-by got so bad that the dipstick kept blowing on up out of its tube. I drove it (in a spectacular cloud of blue smoke) to the junkyard and bought a new Honda. That's where the Pats are with Brissett, except they overpaid for their stopgap.
