PATRIOTS TRAINING CAMP Tuesday Patriots Training Camp Thread 8/13

Those players were here last year.

I agree slightly at QB only because you really can’t get worse, but they can’t close.

If Hooper is better than Gesicki it’s munute.

Year 2 Douglass would compare to year 1 Douglas. “Any two” of guys who were either behind them or never played in the league is just a hope.

Thats the rosiest of pictures of improvement from 4 wins.

I hope I’m wrong. I will be rooting for them to win every game but they haven’t even tried to field the best team they can. I have to be honest.

Choosing not to spend 43,000,000 would be lie trading all your draft picks into next year. Worse in fact because with 43,000,000 you could sign more starters than you had draft picks.
I tend to be a rose colored optimist.

however minute it seems you agree with the fact that there were improvements made.

You've got us with as little as 1 win. I think we will win at least 1 more game than last year but hopefully a few more than that.

And I can't argue that they should have spent more.

No. I said if hooper is better than gesicki it’s minute, that doesn’t mean it’s an improvement.

Qb really is the only spot you could argue but if brissett is playing he’s an 18-30 QB who is one of the rare ones who has worse ypa and td % than Mac.
I’ll put it this way, if you consider that improvemrnt ok but we didn’t pass any other team at qb.

The worst part is we didn’t even try.

Here’s a good test. Name the teams you think we are better than.

We need multiple players. Unfortunately we prefer to keep 43,000,000 of the player budget in the bank.
They have tried to spend on talent, Calvin Ridley and Brandon Aiyuk. It didn't work out.

It really wasn't a great FA this past year.

Next year has some good looking young guys. Jedrick Wills could be a good option at LT. Browns are in cap hell next year with Watson accounting for 69mil of the cap space for 2025. He also accounts for 69 mil in 2026 and 2027. It's all guaranteed so the Browns can't do anything.

Tee Higgins and Ceedee Lamb are also slated as FAs as well.

So if the cap stayed constant over the next 3 years they could cash spend 162 million less than the cap number and still be at the 89%.
We never have to spend the 43,000,000 Kraft hoarded this year.
Yes, Kraft spending $77M more than the CBA mandate through one season is obviously a sign that he’s trying to pocket as much money as possible.

There is no day 2. Mayo didnt want to have one because he thinks they devolve into chaos.
Thanks, I must’ve misread something this week.

Pats played the Eagles last year in the regular season with DAndrews, Trent, Anderseon, Mafi and Sow. They did a great job. Hey, I'm trying to be positive. They might've just been trying stuff out today.....

Very small point because 14 is unacceptable but keep in mind these aren't real sacks they are plays that got blown up by rushers but some of them would be incomplete or scrambles in real life. Or even an occasional completion. Of course one could also lead to a rushed through and interceptions instead too.

I didn't track the exact number but our front was reeking havoc on them at points today as well.
That’s a 33% pressure rate

All the players in the post practice interviews seemed to be pretty level headed afterward. I didn’t expect anyone to come straight out and say they sucked, but I still put more stock into what they say than the reporters, who have no knowledge of what they were trying to accomplish. I doubt their main goal today was to “win” a joint practice.

Reporters tend to get caught in an echo chamber with a lot of their analysis and are prone to confirmation bias. I remember last year there were many positive camp reports on how the offense finally looked “functional” again under an established coordinator. Instead, they fell off a cliff. Reports the previous year were that they were an utter disaster. Looking back at their record that year, they may have even overachieved with that roster.

Last year it was around this time of the year that the Pats traded for Lowe and Wheatley. It makes me wonder if the Pats are going to make any moves for OT support.

You are only talking about WRs and Tackles. There are a lot of other needs on a 4 win team that can be addressed in FA.

This o line needs a compete tear down.
Especially at the tackle position.
Screw trading for a WR.
Get the kids some protection.
"especially" at the tackle position???
========
I have zero problems with Sow-Andrews-Onwenu and am OK with backups Jordan, Leverett, and Robinson.

Forget WRs. Without an oline WRs are meaningless.

Andersen? Did you mean Calvin Anderson? He did not play last year. Lowe? Onwenu? You are being VERY positive with Anderson in the lineup.

So a mix and match offensive line sucked vs a vaunted Philly pass rush, I’m not surprised.

We are choosing this tackle situation.

The situation at OT is worse than last year because we choose not to play Onwenu at RT.

Oops - thanks for the correction. Anderson played 100% of the O snaps in that Eagles game last year and did well. Not gonna talk about how his next game (and only other start), he was badly beaten by All World Van Ginkel a fair amount... No sir...

Somehow, it seems that folks believe that the who plays with the first team and second team actually means that is where they will be for Game 1 or later.

The team is trying lots of things out. For example, Mafi is playing lots of center. Why? Because if he isn't an Ok backup center, he has no place on the roster. Leverett and Jordan will be the backup IOL's, plus rookie Robinson. This is true at lots of levels. The staff needs to see what they have in lots of players. If Tavai is "replaced" by McMillan on the first team on Thursday what will it mean. Only that they needed to see more from McMillan.

In that light, I think that Maye should have been playing with more of the starters, He needs the reps. Having him playing with Mafi at center is just plain wrong. Use Zappe and Milton to test Mafi, not Maye. I wouldn't even play Brissett on Thursday, just Maye and Milton. Zappe can continue to spend his time signing #1 QB autographs.
============
As far as OL, it is what it is. Lowe may be our least worse LT at the moment. We need two LT's, a starter and a backup. We don't have them. I suspect that the team is OK with Okorafor and Wallace at RT. If not, we'll see Onwenu, not a step forward.
================
The BOTTOM LINE
is that we probably will sign at least one LT who is cut by another team, maybe throwing a 6th to a team that is ready to cut him. It should be clear that some team will have a #3 LT that they choose to cut that is better than at least one of Lowe and Anderson. I suspect that we should carry 4 OT's plus Onwenu. The OT situation may be better in a month or two, allowing us to cut someone, or not.

No one is trading or cutting a quality LT, a potential starter, or even a close to average LT. That is not the issue. The question is whether we can sign someone better than Lowe or better than Anderson.

No guarantees with rookies but had we invested in LT either through my trade scenario or free agency or even a trade then I don't think we'd be looking at top 5 or even top ten. Without the LT I'm pooping my pants.
Oh yeah. I think it was obvious to everyone here that the Patriots needed a LT, but not Patriots management. They seemed to whiff on it during the FA period or the draft. A FA LT would have been ideal, but nooooooo too expensive.
