The Joe Milton Experience

Here is a thought, if the Pats had Milton last season, do they play him and win more games than they did?
That's interesting, I doubt they would have won more but they were so bad last year maybe he makes a play or 2 in the right game and makes his bad plays in different games they lost anyways so its a crap shoot.
He's not running away from starting NFL linebacker and lineman and like he did last night and he completed all his passes to guys open by 5 yards or more and was incomplete on the 2 with defenders near the player including 1 likely pick 6 if playing a starting defense.
Despite the fact he's not shown he's a starting NFL QB, Zappe and Mac Jones are also not starting NFL QB's.

Fyi, Milton's measured top speed (21.3mph - of note is JDaniels' 21.8mph) during a long TD run last year was faster than any NFL QB ball carrier in the history of the official NextGenStats era (since 2016). I take it with a grain of salt, though, because of different measuring techniques, but still...

I never understood the Cunningham hype. Their were times I thought people were talking about someone else....I didn't get it. Milton is a much better QB than Cunningham but IDK if that's good enough for the NFL. IMO he should get the same starter consideration as Brissett and Maye during camp and preseason.

Conversations like this tend to push commentators into one of two stances:

1) "I am a tough-minded, deadly serious fan who really should be running an NFL team. Anybody who has anything positive to say about [insert young player's name here] at this point in the season is a giddy fanboy, a confirmed sissy, twisting his panties in glee over a few decent plays."

2) "Thank God. Pats' Nation's long nightmare is over. Brady, a little darker, much faster, able to back flip at will, is reborn!"

The truth, as always, is in the middle. As uncomfortable as sitting on a fence can be, that's where I am. Even taking into account all the expected caveats - lousy team, playing against future car wash attendants, just a preseason scrimmage, and so on - I'm still left thinking that Milton was genuinely impressive. When he ran around, he kept his eyes down the field. I thought his decisions as to when to run were absolutely sound. It looked like he ran the huddle fine, he seemed poised, purposeful and confident before during and after each play, and so on. His arm is obviously special. His demeanor after the game was on point. Pretty impressive for a shot-in-the-dark, afterthought player.

I'd love to see a red zone package with them both on the field, both can run and pass, I bet both can catch, if you get creative, you'd have some hard to stop plays I'd think. Milton at RB, Maye rolls to the right pitches to Milton who then throws to Maye after he slips into the end zone or they cover Maye and Milton just runs in or starts to run and then dumps to the WR when the CB starts to go for Milton.
They are both great athletes and they can use that in unique ways. But I bet they won't.

If people just watch his every throw in the senior bowl they'll see what you have in Milton. Looooong way to go.
Hopefully in a year they can get a 4th round pick for him.

He's not going to win the starting job lol. Let's not do the Malik Cunningham thing all over again.

Having said that, enough with Zappe. Give Milton those reps.

The reason Zappe played as much as he did is because they're showcasing him for trade. Either way, he's gone.

Ehhhh. If you are right (I don;t think you are.), it was still a dumb decision to give him that much time, given the importance of developing Maye and thus of getting him reps. I doubt any team will give ANYTHING for Zappe. He ran through waivers last year, after all, without making a ripple. Any team interested in him will wait until we let him go, then think about signing him.

The fact is the team made a stupid decision wasting half a preseason-game playing a guy whose worth is absolutely known and whose trade value is nil.

"I knew (a Milton QB controversy) would happen. Just wait until he makes a couple exciting plays in the preseason, which I fully expect he will since he won't be playing against starters." - me, 8/1/24

No need to showcase him. I doubt teams will get anything more out of last night than what's on tape already. He's the same QB he always was, nothing more nothing less.

I think in a redraft Milton would get picked in the 4th round now.

He was a steal in the 6th.

I bet Spencer Rattler would get picked higher too.

A few designed plays, involving Milton along with the starting QB, could give defensive coordinators nightmares.

Unless the gates are open for trades to the CFL, I don't invision that happening.

My scenario is plausible
My point is : it really isn’t. Sadly - in the NFL - it is MUCH more likely that both Maye and Milton are busts. For both to become good players would be (wonderfully) shocking. I can’t imagine them month panning out.

Also, I’ve seen this movie before. A player has a good preseason game second half and the board freaks out. Almost never leads to a HoF career, rarely leads to a difference maker.

I would absolutely LOVE seeing NE hit on both QBs. As you’ve pointed out, it would be a gold rush !

While unattractive, I’m witty and appealing to some. You never know, Ariana might be tired of Hollywood types.

Gotta keep that tape recent. And yes, nothing special, but if a string of QBs start going down, the valuation calculations can change quickly.

According to McCourty*, Milton "hadn't called a play in a huddle since he was 17 years old." According to Zo, Maye has had a similar lack of experience in that regard.

*I have no idea which one.

This is me April 9 in the draft forum:
Joe Milton compares favorably physically to Anthony Richardson, the fourth player taken in last year’s draft. Fourth.

They both started 12 games. Here are the comparisons:
Freakin steal of the draft. It’s so obvious. He showed continual improvement. Give him a year or two of tutelage, and whatever team drafts him will have the next Josh Allen.

While Milton's limited success in a preseason game does not at all necessarily imply he will be great down the line, neither, as some tough guy poseurs hereabouts seem to assume, does it necessarily mean that he will amount to nothing. Both sorts of assumptions are absurd. The significance of Milton's good play is not very great, but neither is it nothing.
