History is replete with athletes who were not treated fairly subsequently having outstanding, often Hall of Fame championship winning careers, usually somewhere else.

I won't bother to start naming them.

It is of course up to the individual person. What little I know of Zappe's personality and attitude, if - if - he avoids being discouraged by the system and retains and develops his many obvious positive mental and physical capabilities, he has the opportunity ahead of him.

Here, it depends upon Mayo, and the other guys probably being injured.

IMHO Bailey Zappe is better than Brock Purdy.

I admire his pluck, and I wish him well, but I think he has had a pretty fair trial by this point as a starter, and I haven't seen enough to support your level of optimism. It seems to me his ceiling is as a serviceable backup ( which can be a pretty fine sort of career). I'd be happy to be wrong, because he seems like a good egg.

Screw all this 1st round draft new guy Maye shiz....lets trade 3 firsts and a second for that guy named Stiddy! /sarcasm... Theres no controversy...Brisset is doing his job as a placeholder until our shiny new toy is ready to play and from what it sounds, he is doing a good job at mentoring so it's looking like this was a good decision/idea for the new regime. So off to a good start, I think. We cannot expect the rook to light things up from day one. Those that think this would be in for a rude awakening if he did this because if I'm not mistaken, those that light It up their rookie tc end up mediocre. Id rather him progress by being meh at first and then great rather than blowing up the D during a meaningless tc only to do nothing during the regular season...people need to have patience...

Was watching some YouTube and a video of long TDs came on. Jets/Dolphins game where the Jets Hail Mary is intercepted at the 1 yardline and its turned into a pick six. Football is the only sport where you play after the clock hits 0:00.

I don't remember the Dion Branch play. I do remember the Jets and I saw that there were several hail mary pick sixes to end games. The bottom line is that the hail mary rarely works so risk of a pick six or injury fielding the jump ball makes the play not worth the risk unless the game is truly on the line.

We can agree to disagree, but simply put, if I reverse the circumstances and treatment of the two: That is, Zappe drafted by the 49ers and Purdy by the Patriots...I see more potential in Bailey and I think he's a better player.

As for me, I have no loyalty except maybe to guys who played here. I analyze strictly based upon what I see in terms of a player's effectiveness.

My beliefs are often enhanced by epidemic stupidity on the part of the masses, who for example dismiss the wins that year over the Browns and Lions because those two teams 'sucked'. The same idiotic argument can be made about 85% of all the wins under Brady.

As I was dismissed in 1974 when I flatly stated that Jim Plunkett had two Super Bowls in him, based upon my assessment that he is definitely better than Griese, Stabler etc.

To elaborate: In rating a player I value that person's ability to win a championship. It can be subjective and intangible...or maybe not so much. I haven't seen Stanford win a bunch of of other Rose Bowls the last century.

Tim Thomas was constantly bashed by local media the entire time he was here, however I knew he was the most important player on the team since he was called up (in desperation by a bad Bruins team). Some players rise to the occasion.

Flutie was a championship player. It makes what Berry and Phillips did even more egregious than it was.

Zappe was decent against the Browns (even if his numbers inflated by YAC on one play)... but his Lions game is overrated by a lot. Didn't even throw for 200 yards. The defense handed his offense 6 fourth down stops and they only got 1 TD out of it. No reason to think the offense couldn't have done that with Jones behind center. Stevenson also ran for 161 almost outproducing Zappe's passing all by himself. I bet Brady wins a game like that by 50 without breaking a sweat.
