Player Signing Peppers getting paid!

Good to know Wolf looked at my thread here.

Peppers is a perfect Patriot!
Peppers is a good player, no doubt, but what I am missing here?

Teams around the league are cutting starting safeties and we are resigning both of hours to big deals...

Mayo just confirmed the extension during his press conference.
Absolutely love it. I'll also say I love judon and everything he means to this team... I hope he's next.

Because Kraft did almost nothing in Free Agency when the Pats could have been big spenders.

Wolf continuing to do a great job locking up their best players on reasonable deals.

Defense will be really good again assuming they get their final free agents happy for this year at least.

Not 100% sure they needed to re-sign Dugger and Peppers. Maybe they can trade one of them…this year or next.

Trade one this year? I’m dumbfounded by that comment. Why the hell would the team extend them and trade them the same year? Who does business like that?

Nobody would do that. It’s a crazy idea.

I've been saying since FA started to let Dugger walk and apply that money towards a FS or another position that needs help. It's not the best use of cap signing two similar players. If he was "their best defensive player last season", why is he making considerably less than Dugger?

I understand your point. But after McCourty left, BB and Mayo have shown no urgency in signing a FS. So it makes me wonder.

Jesse Bates was the only worthy player in 2023 , but he got paid a lot of money. Not sure why Mayo doesn't want a FS.

Agreed. But BB didn't draft a FS in 2023 either. They could have tried to draft a good FS in R3. Instead they drafted Mapu who seems like a 3rd SS with Duggar and Peppers. And Mayo is not concerned in FA or the draft in 2024. Makes me wonder.

It was a lot of money, 64 million. Obviously he is more explosive and one of the best playmakers at the position. However, I don’t want my teams fs making 132 combined tackles. Thats called being on a bad defense that teams are getting to the 2nd and 3rd level on the run and making a lot of throws in the passing game. Middle LB tackle type tackle numbers.

Mayo wanted a FS and he signed one for a hell of a lot less than some of the other big name FS’s that were signed this offseason. Ranked 2nd vs the run and 8th vs the pass. He was the 5th highest rated at FS last season right behind McKinney who signed for 67 million. The Pats got Peppers for 30 million. Huge win. He’s not Winfield or Bates but he is very good considering he has just started playing the position after taking over the reigns from McCourty. Think he had a small stint at Green Bay early in his career.

Couldn’t be more pleased with the signing. I really wanted them to get this done and I’m shocked for the amount they were able to do so.

I see the confusion. His contract is for 3 years, not 3 hours silly.

Peppers was drafted by the Browns and was the Brown's FS for a whole year. After that the Brown's moved him to SS. Two years after the draft Peppers was traded to the Giants (OBJ trade) and played a lot of FS for the Giants.

I love the signing too. Great person, great athlete, and very flexible. I am not sure he is strictly a FS but can rotate back there. Contract is at a good price too.

Played like a top 10 safety last season. Earned every penny and it’s a lot better team friendly deal considering what kind of money went out to the big name free agents at safety. He outplayed a lot of them...
...including his own teammate, who undeservedly received a bigger contract than Pep did...

Yep; the money given to Uncle Dugg could have and should have been better-spent elsewhere.

I'm already 100% sure that they didn't.

What are you talking about? Great players get paid like great players. Duggar has led this team in solo tackles on a per game basis nearly every season he has been here. Not a single free agent the collaborative signed this offseason reset the market for their respective position, nobody got overpaid.

I don't know if you've noticed, but over the last decade or so the NFL has changed... it's become more of an offensive league and especially a throwing league. Since the early days of Chung, Duron Harmon and McCourty this defense has primarily been a three safety based defense. One strong safety has largely replaced the weakside linebacker role in most defensive sets... to improve team speed. They play three safeties.

The team started this offseason with the third most cap space in the NFL, they had the most cap space in the NFL next year and going forward. Money was not a problem, they had money to burn. After re-signing almost all of their priority free agents and a couple from the outside, they currently have the most cap space available now. They have plenty of money, they're not paying a QB.

They could have improved the offensive tackle position, they could have signed better free agents than Okorafor, Jordan and Leverett, but money had nothing to do with it... they simply dropped the ball in free agency. Don't be such a cheapskate...

That doesn’t sound good. Hope they don’t get multiple QBs hurt.

Well, at least they have Joe Milton III. Closest thing to Superman behind center. Think a young Cam Newton. But with a stronger arm.
