Pats WR's ... What is a #1 WR?

Status
Not open for further replies.
The Chiefs ran the ball and played defense, they haven’t had a #1 the last two years.

The definition now includes old TE’s… laughable.
the last 3 seasons Kelce has 295 rcpts, 3500 yards, 26 TD's.
only in Wozzy world is that laughable

So weird... you keep forgetting to mention the quality of their QB for some reason. That's why they can get away with it.

Pats of course don't have such a QB and they absolutely will not get away with having a WR #1. I hope Maye can get there but obviously it won't happen right away.

Translation: I got no rebuttal at all. Cool
Just repeating patently untrue information isn’t worth rebutting. You’re a dullard, really slow.

Nick Foles wasn’t an all world QB, he didn’t have a #1… myth busted.

Nick Foles, Joe Flacco, Trent Dilfer… quality… sounds legit.

Now TE’s qualify as #1 WR’s… next it will be field goal kickers.

Foles/Wentz, Flacco, Brad Johnson, Dilfer, Hostetler, Mark Rypien, Doug Williams, Jim McMahon, Eli Manning (twice), Jim Plunkett, Peyton Manning with a broken neck or Joe Theisman... it’s only “an outlier” when it happens once… not regularly.

The generational QB myth is as false as the #1 WR myth.

Newel flash: Having great players is a good thing. There is no one magical position, it takes a team.

Flacco had Smith and Boldin
Johnson had Keyshawn
Eli had Plaxico and Nicks
Rypien had two of them… Clark and Monk.

Weird… they all look like WR1 receivers to me.

Sounds great... Gonzo covered Tyreek last season, held him to the least productive game of his season.

Uncoverable... that's not even a word.

Did we win that game? ( I know... I know... Slightly off topic.)

I mean I guess you are right, there's no such thing as "uncoverable".

I always wonder, do you really need a #1?
Tua was a noodle armed wasted pick that always injured until Hill arrived. now Tua is in the MVP conversation

I just read Amari Cooper wasn't going to report to camp because he was only making 20 million. They gave him another 5 so he agreed.
I am sick and tired of these Diva receivers. I don't want one. Find me some average ones and pay a decent QB.

"They" being a team with an all world QB. Funny how you forget that part. Also the Pats don't have one so let's not pretend the Pats are fine without a #1 WR.

That's why so many teams have won championships without a #1 WR. Oh wait!
I know of one team that won six.

I will take a team without a so called #1 receiver and has a group of solid receivers where each player has a strength, like your example above. I sure did like the group of receivers we had in 03 and 04, I was bummed when we didn’t resign Branch or Givens, I know they didn’t do much elsewhere but they were perfect fits here. I remember watching 60 minutes one night and one of the segments was on Brady and Branch’s chemistry on the field.
I agree 100%. 1000 yard receivers are arbitrary. That number represents what exactly? Nothing. Receivers getting open has to do with more that just the receiver getting open. Timing. Offensive line has to give the qb time to go through his progressions. The coordinator has to send in the right play. Anybody think Rookie going to get to call audibles all day long? We are back at square one. We had the two greatest ever. Our best #1 receiver by far in that stretch was the Gronkmeister … and he was injured half of his career it felt. Ya Randy .. and what ? He ended up being the typical ***** #1 receiver, and regretted opening up his mouth after he was sent to Timbuktu… it would be great to have 5 guys who can avg 500-700 the first couple of years, build momentum and jell. Get the running backs involved. Team first.

And? Again what does that equate to? Hill is a great football player, questionable character. Those Bama QBs were overrated when they came out? Can Miami make it at least to the superbowl?

Responding to the thread title:

Like Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said about pornography, I know it when I see it.

At present, we don't have a true #1 WR (as compared to some other teams), until we find out that we do. That being said, Brady won 3 SB's with a cast of primarily #2 and #3 caliber WR's. But, they all knew how to get open and because of Brady being able to process a defense so quickly, he would just get the ball to whichever WR was open. Back then, when he was asked who his favorite WR was, he'd simply say "Whichever one is open!" Basically, if you have a solid OL and running game, a stable of #2 and #3 caliber WR's (including a decent Slot WR), and of course, a QB that can get them the ball, can be quite difficult for an opposing defense to defend. I suspect that perhaps one of the WR's that we drafted might end up being a passable #1 caliber WR type, with another being the hopefully next great Slot WR. I also suspect that either through next year's FA and/or draft, they'll still be looking to acquire a more established #1 WR (FA) and another prospect (through the draft), and combine those with what shakes out that they already have. Even so, they need to solve the LT situation (and the rest of the OL) long-term, and improve the quality of the RB depth. A young and promising TE also wouldn't hurt. Even on defense, they do have area's that they need to address (especially with young future starters and depth). The whole team is obviously a work in progress. If Maye becomes who we hope he can be, it'll make the rebuild much easier in most respects.

so basically you are looking for the protoypical X to be a 1... interesting... certainly lends credence to how the position is looked at league wide...

For the most part. I think Edelman was the Patriots 1 WR, but I don’t see him as a prototypical #1WR. Great player, but I don’t think he fits that mold.

You using rookie QB’s in their first three years as an example when just about every rookie QB in history who turned out “good” made steps in years two and three to get progressively better… #1 WR addition or not.
