It seems to me that many here are looking at this through a strictly binary lens. To me it is a bit more nuanced.

Is it cringy?
Yes.

Is it undignified?
Absolutely.

But please, the commentary that implies that this is some poor damsel in distress that needs to be protected and rescued by the state is absurd. She is a college educated grown adult woman, perfectly capable of making decisions on her own.

They met on an airplane and discussed some project she was researching. She was perfectly capable of not engaging in the conversation if she so wanted. She asked for his phone number and later reached out to him. There were multiple times this could have ended before it started. She's 24, not 14. This relationship never happens without her being an active and willing participant, right from the beginning.


Would I personally want to be involved with a woman that age? My wife and I get along great because we have similar backgrounds, we experienced the same events at the same time in our lives. As a result we can relate, even though all those things happened long before we met. That makes every day conversations easy. That could never happen between a 24 year old and I.

It takes two to tango. She decided she wanted to get to know him better and spend more time with him, and eventually take it to the next level. As a mentally competent adult that is her choice. Same applies to him. It's definitely not for me, but who am I to judge or tell them not to be together.

May-December relationships raise eyebrows because they are usually cases of both sides using the other in loveless partnership of convenience. But both of these people know exactly what they are doing. Whether one or both have ulterior motives is a moot point.

It is not pedophilia, whatsoever. As @jmt57 points out, she's more than capable of making the correct choices and understanding the consequences of her behavior, even if she had no inkling of the fallout that comes with hooking up with a celebrity, or the extent of this fallout.

Pedophilia is the heinous exploitation of a child's inability to stand their ground or to articulate that what is happening to them is not right, as well as their ability to defend against such predators.
