Time To Move On From Zappe and Shuster

Colts OL was ranked 3rd in the league going into the 2019 season for their starting QB Jacoby Brissett. They weren't slouches.
And who was Brissett supposed to pass downfield too?

30 year old TY Hilton played a little over half the season and got hurt. He was toast.

The remaining murderer's row of receivers he was throwing too in order of receptions; Jack Doyle, Zach Pascal, Eric Ebron, Parris Campbell, Marcus Johnson, Chester Rogers... stiffs.

The only one with a modicum of talent was Campbell and he started 3 games since he can never stayed healthy. The rest of those guys are average if not outright bad. Team sport... you can't pass deep with deep ball receiver.

They could easily trade Juju to a team that finds themselves thin at WR after preseason, possibly after some injuries.

They won't get much for him because he's entering the last year of his deal and he's only a possession WR, but there are coaches who know and trust him. Chiefs maybe when Rashee Rice's punishment gets handed down.
I don't think anyone wants him badly enough to trade for him. They'll wait for him to get cut.

I don't know man. Doyle got a Pro Bowl nod that year (for some reason...) and was a beast (80rec) in his other Pro Bowl year in 2017. Ebron had a fantastic 2018 (13TDs) and deservingly got a Pro Bowl nod then too, so including 4 time PB (but as you say on the decline) TY's 10 of 16 games played, there was a lot of better than average going on there.

The question is how did the Colts, playing half their games indoors, only get 307 recs that whole year (compared to 432 the year before with the same OC and mostly the same weapons and as sb1 said a solid line) while the Pats got 330 (adjusted for 16 games) this past year with horrible everything offensive play?

Easy to say now before football has actually begun. Wait until preseason is underway and players start getting hurt. A one year reasonably priced rental will look like a good deal. The Chiefs might be interested after Rashee Rice's suspension gets handed down.

We're talking about why Brissett wasn't more explosive and passing downfield more... not sure two TE's is the answer to that question.

Doyle was also a Pro Bowl alternate, Mac Jones and Tyrod Taylor were also alternates... not sure that means much anymore besides they need a warm body and the coaches get to choose.

They threw the 24th fewest attempts in the NFL that year, they had no receivers, certainly no downfield threats, ran the 18th fewest offensive plays... the year prior they threw the 2nd most pass attempts in the NFL and ran the third most offensive plays because their defense was much better in 2018 than 2019. Andrew Luck is also a better QB than Brissett, but circumstances around his team dictated a lot of his output.

No way on Zappe. We gonna need qb's to get trucked during the preseason to begin with. Oline is a wreck. Just imagine the preseason with a fraud left tackle, oh man... We will loose a qb every 6 games. Cannon fader. Keep Maye and Milton in protective custody until next year's draft!

Peyton Manning didn't seem to have a problem throwing downfield to HOFers like Jacob Tamme, Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie.

As that Colts article showed Brissett tends to be conservative more often than not. Nothing wrong with that but it's hard to win if that's all you have.

Laughable... I've described Brissett safe, efficient and good but not overly explosive or spectacular... and you're comparing him to Peyton Manning.

Point was if you can throw downfield - and Brissett to date is not known for that at all - you can make it work with anyone whether they're a "deep ball receiver" or not. Manning did.

You've conveniently forgotten to include Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne to make your point that Brissett is not Peyton Manning.

Manning and many other top QBs can make it work throwing downfield without deep ball receivers yes. Brissett can't.

Mahomes is far superior to Brissett and last season had the lowest yards per attempt of his career...

Brissett is not alone and magic QB's can't do the impossible... that only happens in QB fanboy's minds.

Mahomes in a "down year" for him won the Super Bowl.

This is Brissett's arm. I wouldn't expect much more than this.

Because it's a team game and you put entirely too much focus and credit on QB's... that's a you problem.

Peyton won a ring in a season he got benched for Brock Osweiler and was playing with a broken neck. The Eagles didn't beat the Patriots because Nick Foles was magic, the team was magic.

I've already told you Brissett is a placeholder, a bridge QB for the kid. Don't try to put words in mouth.

Wozzy I hope you don't even dream that we can go anywhere with Biscuit @ QB that dream will turn into a nightmare. Biscuit doesn't move the needle we know what he can do he's marginally better than Jones and Zappe. That will not make us competitivite in the Talented AFC I want a QB who can throw Guys open and make tough throws we should have that in Drake Maye.

And the magical decision to keep Butler on the bench and let the goof troop get diced up by Nick Foles instead.

You called Brissett a "good QB". Your words.

Really hoping Maye beats him out I have never been this much underwhelmed by a Bridge QB not looking forward to it.

Depends how great the collaboration station did on the team around the QB. I'm not even sure Brissett will be the starter.

Average/good QB's have won Super Bowls in the past though, quite a few have... it's a team game.
