Time To Move On From Zappe and Shuster

Feels like people are arguing which is better, a 1996 Ford Taurus or a 1997 Honda Civic.

Zappe, yeah...I'd trade him NOW. He will need to pick up a new system and etc...

Schuster-Smith, I keep him around just because he is untradeable right now....unless we are willing to eat most of his salary, IMO. And he was injured last year....he's better than he was last year for sure. Might even be our best WR....

AVP wanted a guy he knew, and who knew the offense, and who could mentor Maye. Zappe didn't check any of those boxes. But if Jakoby gets hurt in the first part of 2024, our best guy to throw in there is Zappe, not either of the two rookies. And next year, Zappe would be a better value as the #2 QB than Brisette, making millions less. Milton is a nice project until he starts affecting who goes to the practice squad, who gets cut etc., in order to keep him.

i.e.:
- in early 2024, our best lineup is Brisette-Zappe-Maye
- later in 2024, it's Brisette-Maye-Zappe, or possibly Maye-Brisette-Zappe
- in 2025, it's Maye-Zappe
Good points. I'll tell you why Zapp won't be in the 2nd position. By virtue of him being an experienced NFL QB he's useful as camp body. The organization just guaranteed Drakes rookie contract 23 million guaranteed. Trust me when I say.. Drake is being paid to play! Everything you've said makes sense. But owners and GMs look at things totally different from the fans perspective. If JB goes down expect to see the rookie get thrown in there.

Are you planning on 6, or are you cutting Osborne?

Don't think we would get much for him.

I saw a reminder that Mayo had said that he is looking to get down to 3 QB's for training camp. The quote is a bit ambiguous, so it doesn't mean that one QB has to leave the team. It could just mean that one of the four is moved to the practice squad, or stays on the roster working out separately while the top 3 work with the rest of the team. Zappe and Milton are basically fighting for their spot for training camp.

“Once we get to training camp, that’s real football,” said Mayo. “So out here in the spring we’ll rock with four (quarterbacks). But as soon as we get to training camp now we’ll look to start paring down the roster.”

Zappe I don't see the point in coming to camp. JuJu, I'm at least willing to let that play out a bit unless somebody inexplicably trades for him.

I didn't say turnover prone I said the occasional turnover. Defending against QB's who hit big plays is what keeps defense coordinators up at night a lot more than a guy throwing short taking the safe play and relying on receiver YAC. Not hard to see that the latter keeps interceptions down but doubtful they can win games on their own.

6.61 yards per pass attempt is nothing special at all.
I never called him special, called him safe, consistent and tough.

They could easily trade Juju to a team that finds themselves thin at WR after preseason, possibly after some injuries.

They won't get much for him because he's entering the last year of his deal and he's only a possession WR, but there are coaches who know and trust him. Chiefs maybe when Rashee Rice's punishment gets handed down.

So those wanting to trade Zappe, anyone want to speculate on the market for a guy who was cut last year and none of the other 31 teams had any interest in?

The conventional explanation is that Milton was the best player available late in the draft. I like the subtle message that it sends Maye that he should not get comfortable. Best case is that Milton establishes himself as Brian Hoyer v2 to partner with Maye while providing serviceable play when needed. Developing well enough to be an asset in a trade.
Agree. That's exactly what I believe Mayo's doing letting AVP develop him and let him blossom into a nice NFL player for trade assets.

Long
term? Do you think that we,’re carrying 4 to start the season?
Honestly, I don't. Mayo's already said they want to get to 3 QBs by camps end.. so that puts even added pressure on Zapp. I think he's kept as a camp body and then traded for a 6th or 7th or, a 2025 draft pick.

Yes that number shows a "safe" passing game but good QB's in today's game know when to take risks and know when to be safe.

Give him great blocking, something he hasn't seen since he was a Patriot in 2016 when he had a torn tendon in his throwing hand and maybe he'll look downfield more. Can the 2024 Patriots provide that? I think that's the biggest offseason question for this team, the collaboration station didn't do anything in free agency and may or may not have fumbled the ball in the draft... we'll see.

Are you planning on 6, or are you cutting Osborne?

Right now, I have it as:

Bourne, Osborn, Douglas (slot), Polk, and Baker as locks because we resigned Bourne, signed Osborn, Douglas is on a cheap rookie deal, and Polk/Baker are draft picks.

That leaves us with:

Thornton - Fastest guy by far and a second round pick. Doesn't play ST's. Recently beefed up his thin frame somewhat....
Smith-Schuster - High priced, potentially our best WR, and coming off an injury riddled year.
Reagor - Plays ST's. But with the new kick off rule...maybe Marcus Jones is the better option (quickness in a crowded space).
Boutte - Ever since he didn't put two feet down vs. Miami...we basically never saw him again last year...and the Pats WR lineup should have been easier for him to earn reps given that we lost Bourne half way through the season and Smith-Schuster was in/out of the line up (Parker too).
3 Camp Fodder JAGs (Luther, Kawaan Baker, and Wallis) - These guys could surprise, but I am not counting on it.
Tre Nixon - Is he even on the roster any more? He was I/R'd last year....but heard nothing....was he signed to a futures contract in January or something?

I am not sure we even keep six, but think we will. And I am hoping that Thornton breaks out personally. I am OK with us completely eating Smith-Schuster's entire signing bonus...we still have cap space that we should use in 2024 instead of 2025 wherever possible.

Don't think we would get much for him.

Agree. I'd only ask for a 7th....and for the new team to at least eat about 2-3 million of his salary to lessen the cap impact on our end with his signing bonus.

Colts OL was ranked 3rd in the league going into the 2019 season for their starting QB Jacoby Brissett. They weren't slouches.
