2024 Patriots Season Prediction: A Surprising 9-Win Season With a Dramatic Finish
Ian Logue
With Jerod Mayo and the new coaching staff set to embark on what's likely going to be a pivotal season, this New England Patriots club will be doing it having gone through a massive turnover on offense, which certainly looks much different from a year ago.

This would be the most positive result one could expect. The reality check will be the actual games I guess where injuries, bad or good lucky bounces occur, refs make bad calls, and all the rook players and coach have a brain fart or 2.

Exactly. It's obviously based on things playing out in a best-case-scenario fashion. The X-factor remains whether or not, with Bill gone, they can still dial up defenses to shut down better teams, along with health, injuries, etc. Obviously, crazy situations like players melting down (Mac) are things that can also play a role, although I'd like to think we're past that and hopefully headed in a better direction.

On paper, it seems like a lot. But when you start playing it out week-by-week, that's when some games just feel a little different. Not to mention Tennessee is no longer the powerhouse it was, Seattle is beatable early in the season at home, etc. I also feel like this might be the year the Dolphins take a big step backward, which was also part of it.

Again, just a fun exercise. We'll see in the coming months if it's a better team, or just a more talented version that still can't execute. But I do feel like Brissett is better than he's being given credit for with a fairly talented group that he'll have to work with. Pair that with this defense, and anything is possible.

Although, it's not like this is too crazy. I have him going 4-4, while, while Maye ends up coming in and going 5-4. We'll see.

Probable? No
Possible? Yes

My analogy would be the 1997 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That franchise had not had a winning team in 15 years. The previous year they started 1-8 before winning some meaningless games at the end of the season. Nobody expected the team to do squat. Fans and media had their doubts about the young 2nd year coach. Not a perfect comparison, but still worth considering the contrast.

The first game of the year the defense set the tone with seven sacks while allowing just two field goals for an upset win. The next week it was a pick and the defense forcing long missed field goals, which set up great field position for a so-so offense. All of a sudden the team was winning, and the young players were full of confidence. Despite the subpar offense scoring fewer than 10 points in five games, that team went 10-6 thanks to their defense.

The way it played out was essentially a similar situation to 2021. I think most didn't have high expectations and once Mac was named the starter, we really had no idea what to expect. That schedule wasn't all that easy by any stretch and they still played just well enough to win some of those games.

Maye as a rookie should be comparable to Mac as a rookie, although Maye is certainly the more physically gifted of the two. Meanwhile, Brissett should be good enough to hopefully keep them in each game as long as the defense handles its business.

But they hold the edge in that Cincinnati won't really have a sense of what they're doing out of the gate, with the lack of film working to the Patriots' advantage with a new offense and a supposed new defensive scheme. They picked off Burrow twice the last time they played him and they have the personnel to hang with them defensively.

So if they can somehow win that one and beat Seattle, it gives them somewhat of a buffer to weather some of the games from there. I think they're going to lose two straight from that point, which means if they drop one or both of those first two, they're going to be in rough shape. And the thought (or hope) is also that they'll improve week-to-week.

I'll also point out that this was just a fun exercise and none of it is a hill I'm willing to die on. All you need to do is look back at the 2022 & 2023 versions of this to realize that these are more for entertainment value, albeit I'm hoping we avoid the disasters I didn't see coming in either of those two seasons.

As an NFL fan I hope Burrow is fully recovered. But let's see how the wrist feels after a few hard hits. More importantly they finished 2023 4-5 - not exactly awe inspiring. The Bengals also lost DT DJ Reader and RB Joe Mixon (1,410 yards from scrimmage, 12 TD), which could be significant.

Geno Smith has an excellent WR/TE corps - but he wasn't as good as he was in 2022, and is still a 34 year old 30-36 lifeteime QB. That's also a team with a new HC, new OC and new DC. Last year their defense ranked 25th in points and 30th in yards, and the offense, despite the name recognition (Metcalf, Lockett, Fant) was average - 17th in points, 21st in yards. A Pats win against the Seahawks would not be a shock.

No way. Not with their schedule, rookie HC and QB, new OC and OL coach. Still no true LT.

There are way too.many variables to go with a borderline playoff team prediction.
Had a brutal schedule last season. Won 4 games with terrible QB play. Upgraded at the position no way I see them worse than 4-13..

This season isn't about anyone on thier schedule it's about the Patriots and how they look offensively! Yeah even with everything you mentioned wich is true. I just cannot see them worse.

It's very easy for me. last season was 90% QB driven as the problem. Addition by subtraction at QB, defense has It's 2 best players. Added promising WRs polk and baker along with KJ.

This new AVP offense is what Cleveland and 49ers do zone concepts much more explosive and easier for the backs to maneuver. This being said this team could see 9 wins.

"Meanwhile, Brissett is a smart, veteran player who should be a breath of fresh air"

Hasn't started since 2022
When he does start he averages 0.75 passing TDs with a winning rate of 37%

Say it with me: They. Are Not. A. QB. Away.

That statement was meant in comparison to Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe. I feel like those games where they couldn't even get to 10 points, those three contests were good examples of how it could have gone differently with Brissett under center.

Brissett has been QB1 for the majority (15,15,11 starts) of games during 3 seasons of his career.
Following each of those 3 seasons, the team has either replaced or cut Brissett with zero starts in any of the subsequent seasons.
Your "breath of fresh air" starter costs a paltry $8 mill ....which is almost double what his last employer who happily moved on was paying.
Tip of the cap to Brissett's agent for locating an inexperienced regime willing to pay up for a JAG starter/stable pony
I'll also point out that this was just a fun exercise
I'm having fun....about as much fun as the Cam Newton glory year
